In the article Kipper stated, "Greg, he had a rough going the first couple weeks here."

Anybody know why? Whether it was basketball related or perhaps personal like missing a girlfriend back home?

Don't know for sure, but i think it has to do with basketball. He was noted as being fairly raw coming in, skill wise. Sounds like he's getting better, fast. Which is awesome.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Freshman, away from home, soccer player now bball player, w/o as much experience as vets or other rookies, BU intense summer workouts that have been described as fast-paced with no down-time with lots of new things to learn/be able to do ... sort of why freshmen usually take awhile to adapt to speed of game, learn defense, etc. learn to swim by being thrown into the ocean - sounds like he took in some water and learned how to swim :D

Good read. Q&A between Piper and KN.

Excited to see what he can do this year. Have the feeling he could be really impressive

That was a great interview thank you. Good job by Piper and Kipper seems like a well grounded kid. I liked this: "And he’s real intense, and I think it’s going to feel like he’s on the floor with us this year."

Why are we playing Augustana Nov. 22 rather than as an early/pre season game? DIII school so does not count toward win total. Usually works as a warm up game, not after four games?

This is the least difficult non-conference schedule that I ever remember. It is a good year for it as well.

All need to remember, 2 B1G games scheduled in early December. Would not be good for us to win all the non conference and lose both conference. Mizznoz game
looms big before Xmas.;) . Schedule is very winnable early, hope we make hay.

Upperclassmen for @illinimbb held high standards to help lead our freshman to best 7 week transformations I've seen #Illini

Man, I love Underwood. I can't explain it completely, but the guy just exudes competence. His presence here is long overdue.

Anyone else cringe when they see "certain wins"? Maybe I've endured one nut punch too many

I couldn't come up with a better word to use haha. I meant all those teams are bottom 25% of all D1 schools. Given how volatile CBB is 'certain' might be too confident. Maybe expected is a better word.

I'm sure Underwood doesn't know the recent history of "not good, great" but he did trigger me a little.

His context means very pleased with it, I'm sure. Reestablish SWAG, he is doing it, players see, and will come out with a good mind set. Players have all spoken of the intensity, and his firm demeanor. He's not there friend, he's the coach, but when it's time to be off court, he can talk to them like they are people he wants to be with. Might have something to do with the fact that his son is there , makes him look at it different. :illinois:

Anyone familiar with the "Why does corn in Illinois lean to the east" joke?

My personal favorite to bring up to my friends that are either Hoosiers or Hawkeyes...

Q. What is the best thing to ever come out of Iowa, after my wife of course?

This pre-season schedule seems to be more toward the middle strength opponents than in the past (~175 is the mid-point). There is one fewer strong opponent and two fewer pre-frosted cupcakes. I personally would like to get rid of all the pre-frosted games.

Here are the pre-season games sorted by last years final Sagarin Ratings. I was surprised at where some of the teams fell on the list.

Real games:
39 Wake Forest
80 NMST

Should win games that are solid warm ups:
136 Marshall
143 MIZZ
152 Grand Canyon
168 NC Central

Cupcakes:
192 Depaul
199 Tennesee-Martin
228 UNLV

Pre-Frosted Cupcakes:
293 Austin Peay
317 Southern
346 Longwood
xxx Augustana

Hadn't really looked too hard until today. But probable rpi top 100 games would be wake, nmst, and miznoz.

Everyone else is way outside the top 100. Maybe Marshall has and 1% chance to move up 30 or so spots to the top 100. Unlv maybe has a chance cause they play in a decent conference, but that feels like wishful thinking.

We need to be at least 2-1 in those guaranteed top 100 games I'd say (still might not be enough), and sweep the rest.

Have you, by chance, been following Mizzou in the offseason?

Final rankings last year have little correlation to what these teams will bring to the table. As Adnarel pointed out, Mizzou is/will not be a team outside the top 150 in CBB. Measuring based on their talent, I think they are easily a top 15 team, though their coach makes me wonder if they will be a top 25 at all. I'd put them a tick below WF, for now. NMSU and UNLV will be decent teams, probably between 60-80, which is where most would place us preseason. Depaul and Grand Canyon should be better, though definitely underdogs in our games against them.

Personally, I like this website when it comes to rankings. It has us at 61 FYI. Only Mizzou is above us, though I think he's got WF severely underrated.

NC Central is another case in point in the opposite direction. They went to the dance last year as a play-in team but had 8 or 9 seniors (5 redshirt seniors by my count!) Looks like they lost at least their top 5 scorers. The site you cited has them at 295 which might be fair. They look to have lost a ton of talent and experience.

Fletch has got to be worth at least 3.5 games!!

I'm pretty sure every coach/fan/player in every sport at every school says they have the best s+c coach in the business. But man I really feel like we do. Getting basketball players to buy into the weight room is not an easy thing to do. Getting college kids to buy into high level nutrition, usually getting them to eat foods they're not used to, or don't taste so great, is not an easy thing to do.
