I hope we kick some Irish butt that night. I witnessed the worst sportsmanship ever when the Illini played them in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament at Indy. It was Brian Cook's last game as an Illini. I'll never forget the end of the game, which the Illini lost, our guys were walking off the court as the ND student section started booing them and shouting "Go to hell losers, go to hell." We were three rows back of Brian's mom who couldn't believe the lack of class they had.

I'm going to guess that you never attended the games at Carver Hawkeye during Deon's tenure.

I was there the first time Deon played at Carver. It was a nightmare and something I'll never forget or forgive. Iowa fans are the biggest asses on the planet......and that goes for football too. Maybe even more so.

Alan Griffin (2018/Archbishop Stepinac/White Plains, NY): Griffin's stock was on the rise
throughout an impressive senior season with the Crusaders, one that culminated in the school's first-ever state federation title. A future member of the Illinois Fighting Illini, Griffin will look to take his ability as a talented scorer to the Midwest. Griffin is capable of scoring in a variety of ways -- catch-and-shoot, attacking the basket, pulling up off the dribble, and he certainly has the tools to do it. He is a quick, agile player--one that has great ball-handling, and can possibly be a game-changer when he gets hot. He can score at a high rate and is dangerous once he gets into a rhythm. Basketball runs in his DNA, as his father, Adrian, played at Seton Hall for four years and is currently an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder. His two siblings, Adrian Jr. and Aubrey, are also high school standouts.

If AG can be as good as TF was last year we should have a far better season than last year. Ayo + Tavian should add to the presence of Kipper. The front line should be better than last year too, IMHO.

What I Liked: Corey Evans from USA Basketball U18 trials

… The development of Ayo Dosunmu’s jump shot
The primary drawback regarding Ayo Dosunmu has hovered around his jump shot, or lack thereof. His development was publicized greatly last summer as he wreaked havoc with his slippery scoring skills in the lane and dominance in getting to the foul line. However, shooting just 23 percent from beyond the arc on the Nike circuit left pause for concern as to how his game might translate to the college level. From the looks of him this week, those questions should be silenced some. We are not saying that Dosunmu is going to walk into Champaign and overnight become a 40-plus-percent perimeter shooter. However, his much more refined and mechanically sound jumper raises Dosunmu’s ceiling that much more, leaving a solid impression to those in Colorado.

Was curious about Tevian's 3 pt ability. His HS % was 38. Not up to Alan's % but better than Trent's HS avg. If these guys can play defense they will be a problem to defend on the other end as they can take it inside and finish. In combination with Ayo and Trent scoring should not be a problem. Tough early schedule they need to gel quickly or it could be discouraging and these guys are not accustomed to losing.

I'd be shocked if Underwood ever recruits someone as lacking in defensive basics as Smith again.

That had to be the most shocking thing I think I saw last year, how lost MS was on the defensive end, especially the lack of ball-u-man concepts and positioning.

Excellent post. If you can't understand/play ball-u-man D, you'd better be unstoppable on O.

Maybe the new guys coming in aren't, but the guys on the team sure are accustomed to losing. Also, I'm optimistic about our outside shooting improving but am a bit more skeptical of our recruit's ability to finish inside, except for Ayo. I think the other guys will have some serious adjustments to make in order to be effective against Big Ten defenses.

Ayo, Trent and Da'Monte are going to be a dynamic backcourt.

Jones especially is long and athletic. He'll finish inside.

The other guys haven't been at the university all that long (except Jordan and maybe Nichols). Last year was tough no doubt. However, one of the blessing of re-shaping the roster as Underwood has, you kinda get to reset the culture. Between last year and this new class, the team is almost entirely different. My personal opinion is that the guys who transferred out took some of that losing mentality/baggage with them.

With a year of experience under BU and another year of development a team of Trent, DaMonte, Aaron, Kipper, and Ebo would be better than last year's team but that isn't a high std.

That is certainly the hope.

AJ and DMW are definitely will be the wildcards in the whole mix. AJ must play his good defense, scrap and harass, and shoot the 3 on a 40 % clip, defended or not. DMW same on defense , his shooting must improve, but I think the rebounds and put backs will be his major contribution. With our guards firing off outside shots, we must find a garbage man under the basket. DMW should fit that bill, he has grown a lot from pictures we seen, and hopefully increased his bb IQ. If those 2 avg 10/pts a game, and pickup 10 reb/per, 5 steals /a game, we will be looking very good. AJ has to be our senior leader, DMW can become a go to guy.;):illinois:

TJL's D and penetration will be missed. TJL was a plus defender...and I'm not sure what to expect of AD and AF in place of him.

Are you 100% confident Damonte will be a full time starter all season? I'm not. I see Ayo, TF,and Kipper starting all year unless someone gets in trouble outside of that I need to see more from these new players.

I think Kane's is a true big man with back to the basket skills, athleticism, he keeps the ball high, and he isn't afraid to block a shot. The real worry will be foul trouble.
I agree. I think he could be. I also think Geogi can shoot from the mid range and three. I am looking forward to watching there guys and seeing who else we are looking at either from the USA. elsewhere or what transfers could be available. Our roster is not done yet.

Starters may be like recruiting i.e. fluid.

Ebo/Kane
Kipper/Jones/GBez
AJ/AG
Ayo/DaMonte
TF/AF

These are the obvious to me but the mix/match will depend on development, chemistry, and matchups. Could be several surprises and not a fixed lineup. I think our returnees are more predictable but only two are upper class men so could see significant growth from them. My logic says that every freshman that starts is an improvement unless BU has written off the year and is only interested in development.

PG: Frazier/Feliz
2G: Ayo/Da'Monte
3G: Nichols/Griffin
SF: Tevian/AJ
C: Kane/Ebo
Spot minutes at 4 and 5: Giorgi Bez.

Possible starter in Da'Monte.
Should be an upgrade in team speed, athleticism, and shooting skill. Less defensive experience with the newcomers.

There should be 3-4 players on the court at all times who are legitimate scoring threats.

I expect he'll start all year, but starting is hardly the point. He'll play starters minutes in any case.

See I thought.

TF, Ayo, Kipper, Ebo and then Feliz or Demonte.
Feliz looks pretty good to me but we shall have to see.
By B10 I think Kane surpasses Ebo.

Feliz has plenty of experience. Feliz can really pass, dribble and even shoot. Demonte is likely better on D and the boards. I am looking forward to seeing Feliz. He looks really good but I expect a healed Damomte to improve too.
AF played internationally versus very good talent. Even guys that went into the NBA.
