What’s he doing till then

One would hope that the coaches have given him instructions on what to do in the interim: Here, kid, go to the YMCA and lift these weights, practice your freethrows, run those wind sprints...

I'm not sure I can do this anymore. Maybe I just need to unplug until November.

Lou Henson on Saturday Sportsline said this team has plenty of height to be good. His best team had a 6'7" center.

Josh Whitman said Samba Kane will be back on campus in August. :thumb:

Phew...I really was afraid of losing another big. Still really hoping Zdor comes on board. I'm not expecting much, just need someone who can provide even a little bit of a barrier to the hoop...if only for a few minutes.

Giorgi and Zdor’s five fouls are huge to have samba on the floor defensively at the end of the game. Relieved to hear samba will be here.

Here is some more good news - no one has left the team today.

What was the average height of a basketball player back then vs. today? It feels like they average 2" taller now. 6'10" used to be a big center. Jens at 7' was a rarity.

There is a big difference between guarding someone 3" taller and someone 5" taller.

I expect that we are going to really miss the minutes from Ebo.

That is historically true, but it's worth noting that there have been two intervening events since the heyday of that talking point.

2. Illinois is not the prestige-humping institution it once was. That's a new leadership thing, that's a state politics thing, that's a modern realities of higher education thing, it's a culture of the college admissions process thing, it's a variety of reasons that the days of Nancy Cantor being desperate to cosplay that we're Michigan are over.

Doesn't mean we still not might turn down a kid that another Big Ten school would take, but it's not what it was.

Are you talking about for athletes or students in general? If athletes, then there is no way that Michigan has higher standards than Illinois.

For students in general, it depends on the area of study (as it always has). For engineering, accounting, computer science, Information science and other fields, Illinois is still as good or better than Michigan. Liberal Arts and Sciences have never been Illinois' strengths.

the glass is not empty view:
1) he only has one class to take and is more than capable as well as motivated 2) he was able to spend one week with staff and players. thus (I hope) he has a plan from Fletch and had a week of supervision for correct techniques etc; and he has a plan from Antigua on things to work on

no he doesnt get continual feedback and individual adaptions to the plans based on progress and probably didn't get to work on the things intended to be introduced in later weeks and will not get to work with team on offense/defense or the support from teammates thru the ups/downs of training.

But something is better than nothing and he will be here in mid-Aug

Where is Kane going to live and take his class(es)for the next few months and who is paying for it? Denver? Florida? Senegal?
Ibrahima N’Diaye?

I am happy to hear it is apparently the NCAA Clearinghouse, not admissions. Good to find out there is a problem now instead of the fall.

Ayo has incredible court vision / passing skills.

So refreshing to see the ball move when he has it. I know I shouldn't get excited, but I think this years team could be pretty darn good. I read where Underwood is thinking about experimenting with 5 guards. Kipper at 5, Tevian at 4.

1) he doesn’t have a choice
2) think we could give teams all kinds of fits offensively (assuming we hit 3s)
3) interior defense and rebounding scares the crap outta me

Where was it defined as a clearinghouse issue?

Hopefully he's cleared in August. Hate for it to be a Lovet like issue at St johns (practice eligibility only during Freshman year)

Man, I really hope Empty Chair develops some post moves and works on his defensive presence this off season 'cause we're really going to need him.

Empty Chair needs a couple solid weeks with Fletch to develop his castors this summer.

The NCAAA is the biggest bunch of hypocrits! North Carolina, cheats their way to a tarnished NC and they won't accept a class he took at prep school. Rice, left one thing out in that report, there is lack of integrity at NCAA.

I don't blame fans for hating the NCAA but we don't know the exact details of the issue so it's odd to blame the clearinghouse when it could very well be a legitimate concern. This is the same process for all student athletes.

If the NCAA rules are clear, then I have no problem with enforcement, provided that it is not selective enforcement.

If it is a gray area, ILL should expect to catch some breaks occasionally. It seemed like the extra year for Mike Thorne qualified for "break" status.

I stand by my original post these guys at the NCAA will turn their head this way or that way depending on whose involved and what's at stake. So, i really couldn't care less if the NCAA is right on this particular issue with Kane or not.
