We're mathematically closer to #3 Michigan than #5 Iowa on KenPom. Advanced rankings have been incredibly friendly to us.

Illinois has been an incredibly efficient team this year, which is what automatic ratings notice. Their losses have been by 3, 3, 3, 6, and 13 points, and have won 8 games by double digits, playing the 3rd toughest schedule in the nation (behind Penn State and Northwestern, mostly because those two teams have to play Illinois instead of Penn State and Northwestern).

It's because the change in the NBA. Like you hear every game from the announcers, Kofi plays an old style game. Back in the prime of the NBA, Kofi would have been a top 3 pick. Draft experts also have the possible winner of the NCAA player of the year, Luke Garza, as a mid- to late-second round pick. That is not to say that Garza is doing anything wrong. Same with Kofi. Kofi is playing the game he is supposed to play. He's never going to be a point/stretch forward.
I completely agree, and there is room in the NBA still for someone playing his style of game I believe. He just needs to keep working and improving.

Watching today’s game was great, and I think his prospects improve if he keeps dunking like that.

I think one of his weaknesses has been that he doesn’t exploit his physical advantage as well as he could, and that advantage will shrink at the next level.

Following up the Curbelo video posted in the last basketball thread...

There always seems to be a lot of criticism in game threads about Curbelo. Yes, he plays too fast and puts himself in bad spots at times, but he is putting up huge numbers and doing it as a freshman. In B1G play (10 games), he's averaging 5.7 assists per game in less than 23 min/game. That puts his AP40M rate at 10 ast/40 min, which appears to be the best in the B1G. For reference, Ayo's B1G rates are 4.6 APG and AP40M rate is 5.3. In B1G play, Curbelo is averaging 2.3 TO per game, which gives him an average of about 2.5 AST/ TO ratio in conference play. (Ayo's usage is obviously different than Curbelo, but he's our next best assist man because he can open up shots for others because of his playmaking ability.)

My point being, Curbelo is a really special player as a freshman and I don't think fans realize just how good his numbers are.
Next Illini to notch a triple-double.... Andre Curbelo.

there is still a place in the nba for a rebounder. You dont have to get more than nine minutes out of a great rebounder for him to help out.
I give you Andre Drummond....

So with Saturday's performance, Ayo has narrowed the gap between himself and both Garza & Butler. He was a much more distant 3rd heading into the weekend.
Butler is averaging 17 points , 3.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists, how do they come up with the ratings. Ayo's numbers are better.

It's generally based on per minute type stats. How does that compare (I genuinely don't know)?

My point being, Curbelo is a really special player as a freshman and I don't think fans realize just how good his numbers are.

The game threads are all over the map. I think most fans understand that Curbelo is not just an impact freshman, but a player that's arguably generational, in the sense that we haven't seen a PG as creative as he is in a long time. You may be right that he's not getting enough love, but as good as he's been, he's played like a freshman too:

Defensively, he was lost early on, and flat out missed assignments
T/Os have come down, but he was a TO machine early.
The game was too fast for him in the lane, at least early. Had some really ugly, out of control drives.
He's not shown any ability to hit a 3, which is kind of a big deal for a PG.

So if you consider his adjustment period, those game thread criticisms were going to add up. I think at this point in the season, it's pretty clear he should be getting a lot of PT, and makes the team more dangerous for the post-season run. I looked up his PER, and he's actually a tad higher than Ayo was his freshman year (17.1 vs 16.9). He's also got a better DRating. He's a smart, team first, fiercely competitive player. He's going to get a ton of love as long as he's here.
