I was on the same flight into Willard as Hawkins and his dad when they came in for his OV in Sept 2019.

After a quick google search to make sure it was him, when he stepped off the plane I asked “Are you Coleman Hawkins?” He seemed sort of stunned and replied, “Yeah, I am!”

I then said “Welcome to Champaign! Can’t wait to see you in the Orange and Blue.” They walked off a bit dumbfounded that he hadn’t even stepped foot on the ground yet and already was being recognized. Rodney Hawkins just nodded with a big, proud smile.

Chin scooped them up in baggage claim and off they went. Glad staff was able to seal the deal that weekend...

Here’s my lurker shot before boarding at O’Hare...

I am watching Coleman on twitch right now and I asked him about this, and he confirmed that it is true.

I don't think any decent college coach would play Hawkins at the 3. He's not nearly quick enough to defend a 3. And his handles, while good for his size, aren't good enough.

I think he can be a good player, but he's a 4 who can play the 5 in a pinch.
I'm calling it now.....CH is breaking out this year! He will play his way to minutes.

ElGran, ElGran, ElGran. Do you not understand? This is the CoHawk HypeMan you’re talking to.

Coleman Hawkins is going to go out there. He’s going to go out there and he’s going to give THE PEOPLE, what they want.

The People want a rangy stretch 4 that can play the 5, as they say, in a pinch. But we aren’t here to give The People what they want.

We are here to give THE PEOPLE what they need.

And that’s getting Illini to THE LEAGUE.

Yes, freshman CoHawk may have shown a weakness or two, but that’s why we, say it with me A.I.

CoHawk has been in the lab, honing the craft, getting ready for the season and beyond. Some say point-forward, this HypeMan would settle for minutes at the 3, because that’s how we’re going to get CoHawk to The League.

That’s a problem but not necessarily a death knell. It would be like playing a completely different team after the subs. I’m sure BU will have packages for starters, big lineup, small lineup, speed lineup, shooter lineup etc. Even at the HS level we do that.
Yeah but I really don’t see many situations where you would leave yourself with Lieb as your only big available off the bench. I just don’t think OP and CH are that high in the rotation to need to both be on the floor. And I’m not convinced CH could guard a 3

Like I said I don’t see it being likely either. But if BU thinks that lineup can produce based on what he sees in practice, I have no doubts he’s going to throw it out in a game. He’d then get an analytical breakdown of how that lineup actually performed in the game (ppp, ppp allowed, efg, rebounding and +/- Id assume) and decide whether or not to keep trying it moving forward.

Personal addendum: Because I’m a fan of really pushing the envelope, if hutch can run some point (as was previously stated), and CH really is a good enough ball handler that he could be a secondary handler in a tall lineup (my hopes based on reports), I’d love to see us try a jumbo Hutch, Grand, Hawk, Payne, Kofi lineup. Full disclosure, I’m a big a fan of playing a a high and wide 2-3 zone, and the thought of that lineup in a 2-3 kind of makes me drool. A man can dream.

ok, so I will preface this by saying I had no idea what Twitch was.......but I clicked on this link and watched it. I then clicked on the newest video he did 10 hours ago. He was complaining of his shoulder and that it was killing him. He then went on to complain about a trainer that was supposed to give him treatments and the trainer never showed up. He then said he couldn't bench press the next day. Not a real warm and fuzzy about whatever trainer stood him up.

True. Context is also relevant in trying to predict how someone will translate. AP took a lot of shots for Utah last season. He was basically their 2nd option scoring the ball. He actually turned the ball over more times than he recorded an assist. I don't think him coming in, jacking up a lot of shots, and turning the ball over is going to earn him much time on the floor. Utah may have needed him to press the issue. I don't know. BU will not.

I'm a little less worried defensively. He's not big by any measure, but if he follows Trent's lead, perhaps he can learn to be effective in spite of his size. So much of defense is effort. He won't play if he isn't trying on that end. I think its more difficult to maintain that intensity if you are on a middling-bad team. Developing a winner's mentality is probably the most important thing for him. He is sort of a luxury on this roster. He will either fix these issues or get passed up by one (or more) of these freshmen and wear a hole in the backside of his warmup pants.
In defense of Plummer, it is not like he was a turnover machine — except for 1st game of Pac tourney when he had 6 (they still won) And Utah’s starting PG (Rylan Jones) battled injuries most of the year, so Plummer was asked to do more — and he is not a PG. Most of his higher TO games were when Jones didn’t play (including the 6 TO game) or was limited (less than 20 mpg; he averaged 31.5 mpg in his previous year). As long as AP isn’t asked to play point he’ll be fine. His numbers last year (1.0 to 1.4 a/t in 28.2 mpg were pretty similar to Adam Miller’s (0.8/1.1 in 25.5 mpg).

I have no recollection of Plummer’s D in the 4 games I saw him in over the past two seasons, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he needs to up that part of his game. I think overall we’ll be happy with his play though, and he’ll be a key component of this year’s success.

I could possibly see four bigs and Curbelo to feed them but then that means Trent is on the bench. Who is gonna guard the opponets best guard? I think AC and Trent will lead in minutes barring injury.

Haven't posted in awhile (hope all you Illini fans are doing great) , I am just so thankful that Kofi is returning to Illinois! (add in Frazier & Williams returning for their 5th year, I think we are going to quite quite good this coming season). Can't wait!

Anyone got an idea of when the non-conference schedule will be released?

Yes, but we do need a 4 who can shoot, defend, and takes pride in his defense and rebounding. Such a player is Hawk. He will be a big part of this team's success IMHO. I certainly cannot begin to understand why he is being discounted and overlooked as I saw a kid last year who had all the skills to be a star but just lacked confidence and experience. If he really believes in himself and his ability to do whatever he wants on the floor, which pretty much every player with his skill set has, he will be a huge contributor. The main factor is his confidence and self-image.
I hope CH can show us he can shoot well in games. He has not done that shooting 23% from 3, 35% from the field, and 68% from the line If he doesn't improve drastically thats what near GBs 26% career 3pt percentage. I think he can but I can't drink that kool aid until I see it improve drastically over last season given what we have actually seen.
Until then I'm going to give Jake the love and support due to the rather large edge at the 4 spot. He has earned the hype if you ask me shooting it at 41, 52, and 95%. That's what our stretch 4s numbers need to look like.

I mean you could apply this line of thinking to literally any lineup. Why not try Kofi at PG and then if the analytics support it you stay with it. Saying that is useless. If BU sees any combination he likes he is sure to try it. All I’m saying is I don’t see it making sense to get Payne in with Hawk and Kofi. DW and grabs can play fairly big. No reason those 2 aren’t better at the 3 than Payne at the 4. Using your logic, if hawk is a stud ball handler why don’t we just make him the 2 and Payne the 3, Lieb at 4 Kofi at 5? I can sit here and say “if BU sees that in practice and likes it he will try it” but that’s such a hypothetical that what’s the point?

A 2-3 zone had so many weaknesses. Any team that has a capable passer and a couple shooters can break a 2-3 zone down for easy points. A 2-3 zone is never anything to drool over.

Some posters get a thrill out of imagining the tallest lineup possible and give little thought to the skills (quickness, ball-handling, etc) needed to play a position. Coaches will put the best lineup they can on the floor.

I understand that they cannot show Trent in an Illini uniform and I think they do a pretty good job of pretending he is wearing one without stepping over the line of depicting an actual uniform. But is it just me, or does that artwork make Trent's face look fat? If Trent is going to cash in on his Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), I'd like to see a bit more in the Likeness department.

It is not just "some posters" who fantasize this way. Lou Henson visited the Law School during the 1978-79 preseason and spent a fair amount of time thinking out loud about putting Derek Holcomb and James (? not sure of his first name) Griffin on the floor together. I don't think he ever did so, and if he did it was not for a great length of time, but he thought putting the biggest possible line-up together was an intriguing idea.
