I know there was some discussion about a possible suspension to start the year. Could it maybe be Curbelo for leaving the bench? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Can't wait for another mocking article from The Athletic's Eammon Brennan about the Illini having the audacity to think that they'll be better than last season.

Shout out to Seth Davis too.

While I fully support you in hating the haters, I think the odds of being better than last year depend more on your definition of success than your belief in this team.

#2 ranking at season’s end (pre-tourney)
Most wins in the BIG
BIG Tournament champs

I don’t expect the team to improve on those.

Make the Sweet 16? Yes, certainly expect that.

And of course, if you define the season based on Braggin Rights- fully expect better.

His anti-Illinois Indiana bias really shows through in his writing, which is a shame since he's actually pretty decent at it.

High praise for Curbelo today from the Athletic's CJ Moore in his preview of the top 20 guards in America. Papi checks in at #3 in his rankings.

College basketball’s top 20 guards for the 2021-22 season, headlined by Johnny Juzang and Jaden Ivey ($)

3. Andre Curbelo, Illinois

This summer I bumped into Illinois assistant Chester Frazier, who just joined Brad Underwood’s staff, and he commented that Curbelo had made a pass in one of their recent workouts like he’d never seen before. Curbelo’s vision, creativity and guts make him appointment television. He’s going to try some crazy stuff and have some bad turnovers, but you live with it because of the fear he puts in a defense. He’s terrific working out of ball screens and is a great pick-and-roll partner with Kofi Cockburn, who would have been silly to leave Illinois for Kentucky because Curbelo is going to be putting the ball on a platter for him all year.

Curbelo led the Big Ten during conference play in assist rate, the first freshman to do so since Cassius Winston. Winston just so happens to be the last guard in the Big Ten with the kind of vision and creativity as a passer that Curbelo possesses. He also plays with great pace and is slithery off the bounce. The one knock on his game is his 3-point shooting (5 of 31 last year), but the jumper is not broke. He’s actually a decent mid-range shooter — he knocked down 42.1 percent of his jump shots inside 17 feet, per Synergy. He also has great touch on his floater and can score with either hand around the rim. Even if he’s not a threat from 3, he can still be a terrific college point guard. He’s going to be even more fun to watch now that it’s undoubtedly his show this season.

Brennan has always been a turd. It's kind of amazing that he is writing for The Athletic now given the otherwise high quality they usually have.

With the way the Big Ten was exposed in the tournament last year, I'm surprised to see the same group of losers ranked so highly again.
I'm a pretty firm believer that the tournament tells you fairly little about conference strength throughout a season. One bad game, regardless of the opponent, and you're done. It's fairly easy for a conference to flop or succeed based purely on chance (though the better the group, the less likely they are to flop).

I think this list here is most like my own. Not just because we're ranked higher in it. I watch mostly B1G ball but after last season how could anyone have a B1G team ranked higher than us?
DeCourcy has us # 3 and the AP has us # 11....that's a pretty wide number ......And Decourcy is a B1G guy so his poll means more to me....

I'd probably have us at about #8. Gonzaga certainly looks like the strongest team. But after than there are 10-12 teams with a legitimate chance of winning it all and we're one of them. When you have a dominant Center and a top-flight backcourt, you're a threat to win it all.

That seems like a fair appraisal..........I am interested to see if Holmgren and the other highly ranked recruit , whose name escapes me right now , are as good as advertised.....Zags have a ton of talent no doubt.........your 10-12 teams idea is true as college BB will be a wild and woolly trip this year with the beloved hopefully right in the mix at the top....

That being said, I think it was pretty hard to gauge conference strength last year based on the regular season. Alot less intra-conference games last season.

the fabled Austin Hutchinson replaces Adam Miller in the lineup. Omar replaces Giorgi.

We will miss our Batman 4th quarter closer Ayo but the Michigan blowout showed us there is a lot of talent on the team even with him out. Besides the Bulls need him!

Ayo was great. Especially at closing.

That said, this squad has much better depth and versatility. I believe our offense is going to be a nightmare (for our opponents) and we're not going to be going down to the wire nearly as often as last season.
