Idk how many of you follow fletch on instagram but he’s started a new thing the last couple days. The play fast guard and play fast forward of the day.

Yesterday Ty Rodgers hit 18mph on the court to be that guard. The day before it was TSJ, who I also believe hit 18mph.

For forwards, both days it has been Dain. 17mph yesterday and 16 (I believe the day before). Pretty good stuff.

If you’re interested on nerding out a bit on this, keep reading, if not keep scrolling.

Basketball is an acceleration game because relatively speaking the court is small and space is confined. So these guys are hitting 17-18 mph in just a couple steps. You don’t really have the space to reach your top end speed on the basketball court because it’s rare you to get a free run on a straight line.

For comparison, in football you’d want your skill guys to be in that 20+mph range because they have the space to get there. Every now and then on sports center you’ll that a kick returner ran like 23mph or something.

For comparison, I believe Usain Bolt ran 27-28mph in his world record 100m dash.

Rodgers was also #20 at Thornton and his Twitter is @Ty_rodgers20

And who else do we know that came out of Thornton back in the day? Why, the Good Kid himself, our very own UofI baseball hall of famer, Lou Boudreau, of course!

Since Rodgers is being compared to Draymond, just wanted to remind people that Draymond only averaged 11 mpg as a freshman. And his transformation was crazy. From 1 total 3pt attempt his freshman year, to averaging 3.6 attempts per game and hitting them at almost 40% his senior year. And of course add in the efficiency in the paint, the versatile defense, and the playmaking ability.

Is anyone going to the games in Las Vegas? They have hotel & ticket packages on the web site but the hotels seem to suck. If you bought tickets where did you buy them?

Does anyone know what sections are "ILLINI" sections for the tourney in Vegas? I got my second row for Sunday but we have decided to go both since the wife bought Sundays for my 60th. I would prefer to sit with Illini fans Friday if possible unless I fall into great seats again

That info is posted in Dan’s first post in each new thread.

Like that he gets with it in practice, but also don't want to see him get injured. Don't mind Hawkins laying back on that one. Let the freshman show his hustle.
You play how you practice. If you don’t create the reflex in practice you won’t be able to do or it will be significantly delayed when you it in the game.

You also need to get your body used to hitting the deck so you aren’t stunned by the feeling when it happens. Practicing like that allows you to build the mental habit and physical adaptation. Diving on the floor sucks, but like everything else, the more you do it, the more comfortable you get with it.

Spot on. You just can't get outhustled by a freshman. I guarantee Ayo didn't. Your best players should be setting an example. If you wanna be the man, you gotta show you're the man.

We bought tickets online through the T-Mobile arena. Then we booked our flight and hotel package through priceline.

It's so early, and such a dream.

But Ty definitely has that single most important component to his game, which Jerry West voiced about himself, despite his limitations, so many years ago ...

Cam Whitmore is a high ceiling guy vs. Draymond and Ty who are lower ceiling guys that play at the maximum of their abilities.

I was surprised how many times last year the ball was on the floor or loose and our players did not get down there after it. They only reached for it or maybe bent over at the waist but no real fumbleroosky mentality. This was not the case in the previous two seasons.
Yeah they were really lazy BIG champions.

I decided to look back at the Big Ten/ACC opponents we got when we were ranked (i.e., receiving any hype at all...) at the time of the Challenge:

1999-00: #17 Duke vs. #16 Illinois (Chicago, IL)
2000-01: #9 Illinois vs. #1 Duke (Greensboro, NC)
2001-02: #2 Illinois at #5 Maryland
2002-03: #12 North Carolina at #25 Illinois
2003-04: #11 Illinois vs. #10 North Carolina (Greensboro, NC)
2004-05: #1 Wake Forest at #5 Illinois
2005-06: #12 Illinois at North Carolina
2010-11: North Carolina at #20 Illinois
2012-13: Georgia Tech at #22 Illinois
2020-21: #6 Illinois at #10 Duke

So, pretty much any time we have been ranked at the time of the event, we have been given a very exciting opponent ... hope that trend continues. It's kind of amazing how many times we have played Duke or UNC, lol.

Nah. Draymond had an incredibly high ceiling that was reached. He was a non-shooter and non-facilitator his freshman year at MSU who had great defensive instincts, motor and versatility. As he improved his game, we learned he could both shoot and pass as he reached his ceiling as a once-in-a-generation swiss army knife who could do everything on the floor at the NBA level.

Rodgers ain't a great shooter, but he's already a great facilitator. If he gets his shot down, he won't be here 4 years.
