Mac just shows you how when recruiting HS players it is all projection.

Nobody 2 weeks ago much less a year ago thought Dain was this good.
I like Dain, but we don't really know that he is "this good" until we play several games against decent teams.

You're right about Mac E - definitely hasn't lived up to his ranking. There are always kids that don't.

You are certainly right about that one. Mick Cronin at UCLA is redshirting two of his top freshmen this season, but he is the clear exception to the rule.
Huh? Three of his 4 scholarship freshman have played in all 3 games, and while the fourth has only played in 2 games, he starts. Only freshmen that haven’t played already this year are PWOs.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — When Illinois assistant Tim Anderson first met Terrence Shannon Jr., he was a baby.
Anderson had grown up near Shannon’s mother and initially knew Shannon growing up as a smaller kid in the area who played football and basketball.
Shannon was a 5-foot-7 freshman in high school. He wasn’t able to dunk and was mostly a shooter. Then a growth spurt happened, and he got to 6 feet tall. And then another one that led to a focus on basketball.
“He sprouted up and grew like 5 inches, and people started to take notice,” Anderson said.
Shannon isn’t that kid anymore. He’s a 6-foot-6 guard who is a blur in transition and sprouted into the top option and the leader of this year’s young Illini team.

That’s a far cry from where his basketball career began.
“I was short,” Shannon said. “I couldn’t always do all the things I can do. I couldn’t even dunk until after my sophomore year. That was my first time. All I could do was really shoot. I was just a standstill shooter.”
Shannon came to Illinois after three years at Texas Tech, where he blended that old shooting stroke with newfound size to become a consistent rotation piece. He started 57 games while the team made the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.

Always been a strategy at Wisconsin also with their big men. This year no bigs but two guards being redshirted.
Who? Unless their online roster is incorrect, everyone but one player has already played this year. Only one who has not played is a guard, but a PWO.

He went at The King for a year in practice. I know it's practice....but he's not going to face anybody like that ever again.
He looks really confident and that's only going to get better.

Well to be fair, so has Lieb. So I think the original posters comment is still valid. But like you said, certainly couldn’t get much better prep while sitting out.

I agree with EG and ‘Dub BOTH

I should Lieb it alone I suppose…but what
I don’t understand though, is how Lieb enters into it at all. He’s a different player with a completely different set of variables.
Both got to bang with Kofi in practice. And, BOTH have improved immensely; but we’re talking about a completely different set of variables. Here’s what I wanted to say earlier…before I took too long to type:

Sorry, wrong potential Las Vegas opponent. I think it's Tony Bennett at Virginia who is redshirting Isaac Traudt and Leon Bond.

Ahhh, yeah someone I believe pointed out that VA has a history of redshirting. Though in the article I read, Bennett made a point of saying it was the players coming to him and their decisions (but who knows if a little nudging on TB’s part).

The B1G is rated as the toughest conference on Torvik, with the Big 12 very close behind.

The "down year" talk was more centered around not having many elite teams. Preseason, us and IU were the only teams with top 3 seed potential. And that's just potential. Realistically, the conference might not have any top 3 seeds this year.

But overall, the conference is actually rated tougher on Torvik than last year. Other than Minnesota, every team towards the bottom is rated significantly higher this year (NW, PSU, Nebby, Rutgers, Maryland). We are close to having 10 top 50 teams (tOSU at 53), and currently only 1 team outside the top 100.
Clearly, Torvik and others don't have any idea about college basketball. Quality of a conference can only be measured after the season is over and you look at which conference did well in the tourney. Just ask Boeheim.

Actually, skyldub could adjust his statement to say “had success going against Kofi” and his point is still valid.

Good point! I wasn't trying to invalidate the other post at all! I was just pointing out that Dainja has been "playing" against better competition. Albeit our own King Kofi.....and reports all came in that he held his own.

Practice or not...that is notable. Can't wait to see his progression as the year unfolds!

Don't know what else Dain could have done the first 3 games to impress us more
17 ppg 10 rbg 3 blocks/game in 19 minutes per game.

Amarie Bailey 5 star recruit freshman first 3 games for UCLA 12 ppg 3 rbg 2 apg in 26 minutes per a game against Sacramento State, Long Beach State and Norfolk State. What makes him better than Dain other than HS rankings.

I am thinking that games like tonight can't hurt with recruiting if they play well.

Dain not really a first year, an RS freshman more likely. But at this level who is to say Dain doesnt develope into a better NBA prospect.

Few things that give Dain great upside

1. Still not in great shape. If he gets in shape like Kofi he will be able to play 35 mpg and run the fast break
2. Has good handles for big man - can take the ball 12 feet from hoop and drive to basket or pull up for jumper
3. Good shot blocking instincts and timing. Get in shape to get another 12" of vertical and he could become elite shot blocker
4. Free throw shooting is rock bottom - can only and must improve
5. Can't tell yet but if he can hit the free throw line jumper and even lob in an occasional three pointer it will open up the drive
6. Nice footwork and Akeem like fadeway. Truly the dancing bear.

Not the Hulk strength size of Kofi or refined footwork but still could become an all time great Illini big. Get to work Geoff!

I have been impressed with how DD doesn't swat down at the ball when blocking shots. He is just straight up, with arms straight up, using all of his impressive wingspan.

I actually think Dain has shown excellent footwork (albeit against weak opponents).

Another 12" of vertical?? I don't think that's feasible.

And I doubt he'll ever play 35 mpg (at least as long as Hawk is available).

Holy cow. B1G network just showed that Izzo is 74-0 all time in November. Whatever you got to say about the guy, that is crazy impressive.
