The Galloping Ghost

Washington, DC
Not wanting to change the subject, but I will post this anyway. Goode will be missed...how much we will never know. He is a hammer type who does the little things and is willing to bang with anyone. Likely, he was on track to be a big scorer from time to time. What he can do when he returns is a mystery. If he is ready, he can be a shot of adrenaline. If lingering effects and rust keep him on the bench, we will never know.

Podz loss is looking to be blow now too but if he were playing, who would sit? Likely, this team will not miss Curbelo in the long run but I hope he has a great career at St. John's...his skill set just did not work well in the B1G.

Bottom line, the transfer of Podz and AC was likely good for both parties, and overall a wash. Yet I think we all wish them well.
The Goode injury is yet another curse for the Illini to overcome. If we can get RJ and MM playing at their potential and Goode comes back strong, the Skyy is the limit (see what I did there?) So much hanging in the balance on that statement.

Really like and respect the four talented freshmen and their play on the floor. Solid and mature play from them all....but they are freshmen and will blunder from time to time.

We know the talent RJ brings and can see what Mayer can add if he can hit shots and play some defense. Not sure if his injuries are going to linger and inhibit, but pain can get in your head and really keep a player down which appears to be happening.

Overall, injuries are already affecting what this team can be. The season has already been intriguing and will be mesmerizing to behold as it unfolds. I still have questions (not criticism) about the piecing together of all the parts of the puzzle....it is a tough job of which I have no input but I am fascinated. It is likely that this is the type of team that BU has always wanted. He goes to battle without Goode and Perrin (and I think another big like Perrin would be a plus and he could have played some when needed for injuries and foul trouble like BBV) which are two blows to the gut.

So hold onto your hats Illini fans, we are in for a roller coaster ride that we all hope will turn out to be worth the money. We should have some answers by 7 pm on Nov. 20. Go Illini!!
With all due respect, this is a bit dramatic. Goode didn't die. He'll be back in January. There's plenty of time between when he gets back and the tournament. Injuries happen, it's not a curse.

As for Podz, he's playing well against not particularly imposing opponents. Let's see how he does against Gonzaga. And I mean, he chose to leave. I'm not gonna pine for guys that leave in this era. Everybody needs to make the best decision for themselves. I respect it. I also really like the guys we have.

Then there's Mayer. I have seen too many Baylor games over the past several years to be concerned about him. He's as multifaceted as they come. If there are any lingering injury concerns, I trust Fletch to get Mayer where he needs to be.

Ultimately, my lukewarm take is I'm not too concerned about the regular season this year, let alone what we're doing in November. Yeah, I'd love to win another B1G regular-season title, but I'd rather have a team that is playing its best ball in March and hopefully April.

Agree, gonna be fun.

BTW, hoopsfan, you once asked if there was anyone on here who had watched the Whiz Kids. Asked my mother, and she would have regularly seen Gene Vance play in HS, but was too young to really remember any details. She never made a game at U of I to see them in person as WWII made doing anything like that difficult.

I’m probably just being sentimental, but I’m just not sure I’ll ever love any of our guys like I love Trent and Damonte. Lotta guys come close, and Dee is revered in a higher way, but loved… I don’t know.

Edit: I should add Ayo to the Dee category. Revered, and grateful to have the best player in college hoops. But there’s something about the hardworking underdog to love that those guys were too elite to have.

Watching that Trent tribute video was already hitting me in the feels. Then hearing Underwood say that they did that because Trent's jersey probably won't hang in the rafters...that's a real gut punch.

Yea my old a$$ got a little misty eyed last night at the game after seeing the video and realizing it is bul$hit that some stupid criteria would stop them from hanging his jersey up there. I have been a fan for almost 50 years and not to many others are as deserving as Trent is.. A new criteria should be added for players who's work ethics and play on the court exemplifies the spirit and honesty for how we as Illini fans expect to be represented.. Josh Whitman I hope you are listening.

Kofi will probably be the best big man I ever see at IL. His numbers were phenomenal. He earned his All American status. That said, if I had to choose between hanging Kofi's jersey and Trent's, it is Trent's that I would hang. He gave everything for the program. If they can't hang his jersey, there should at a minimum be a "room of those who gave it all for the program" with very high standards -- on the order of a jersey/decade -- and his jersey being the first occupant.

After 2 games, it's pretty clear that our defense is ahead of our offense. This seems a net positive to me as I believe that can keep us in games where we come out cold, or hit a rough spot in a game. Its just a matter of time until the offense catches up, but I really can't wait until the Vegas games so we get a gauge of how good the D really is.

Does anyone know what the criteria are? I may have missed that info.

As long as Kiwane Garris, second all time scorer, goes up, too.

A special criteria is the only way it will happen.

Slippery slope. Lots of accomplished players gave all their eligibility to the Illini and don't have their names in the rafters.

McCamey - 8th all time points, 2nd in assists, 3rd in games played.
Hill - 3rd all time points, 9th games played
Paul - 5th all time games played, 10th all time points

Indeed having a program with so many great players willing to give their all to this university is why having your jersey retired is and should remain the rarest of honors.

Early gut feel and observation:

I like the soft full-court press concept, but don't love it. It may be too vulnerable when teams throw over the top of it, which leads to open 3's or them aggressively attacking the basket.

I know Underwood says it is only to disrupt or delay the other team getting into their offensive sets but there were a few occasions when 3 of our guys at the top of the press didn't get back in time. That worries me when playing a more gifted team.

Any credence to this?

There is a Hall of Fame for University athletics although I don't believe it includes any actual physical location/display. I think the basketball program should establish an Illini Basketball Hall of Fame and actually set up a small museaum, perhaps at SFC, or aat Ubben, and have a more relaxed admission requirement, so we can have a place to honor the Malcom Hills and Trent Fraziers of the world.

I'm looking this as for significant contributions to and for the team, including personal sacrifices for the team. This is intended to be a very, very, high bar.

As an example, Frazier took a secondary role for Ayo and Kofi. He did it for the good of the team. He left everything on the court. He dies Orange and Blue. He flew back from Europe mid-season for a team award while in the middle of a major tear that will likely get him some attention.

McCamey - 8th all time points, 2nd in assists, 3rd in games played.
- "Move Dmitry" says it all in my mind. I'd pass. Stats are tertiary for consideration of this award in my mind.

Hill - 3rd all time points, 9th games played
- A solid consideration. I'm not sure he makes the level of bar I'd want to set.

Paul - 5th all time games played, 10th all time points
- I never saw Brandon's commitment or team effort as outstanding. I was often frustrated by his streaks of hero ball.

Others I'd consider:
Kenny Battle - We can probably still get dna samples off the court. Nevermind that it has been replaced.
Ayo - Absolute if he'd stayed his full eligibility giving up the mega-millions :) Even so, a solid contender.
Dee Brown - Pre-emptive listing - Forfeit for certain actions not to be discussed here.

A possible simplification is to start the clock now - no historical additions.

Dee and Ayo are already up there regardless.

The Trent Frazier Loyalty Award for student athletes whose immense personal sacrifices contributed to outstanding team success.

I like it.

I'll disagree on Demetri. While not saying he would be a recipient of this award, I think he is under appreciated given how good he was for us. But he wasn't part of any great teams. And to your point, "Move Demetri" is seared into many Illini fans' brains. So I get it.
