The parts about TSJ in this vid should simply be copied into the recruiting vid for transfer portal prospects.
Brad lets their players play. Appears to be very true. My only concern is his team can get into trouble when their best players don't know how to respond. But I guess your chances are bad if you're in that situation anyway.

Matisse Thybulle....?
Not a bad comp, and +5 inches.

Coleman guards and impacts 1 to 5, inside and on the perimeter. That’s rare especially at his size.

He gets open looks off the dribble too but doesn’t look to shoot. He could easily have 10 to 12 points a game on those alone.

IMO Coleman is a sports psychologists dream project.

I bet BU would pay someone half a million if they could find a way to permanently unlock his potential.

Offensively, I feel like the secret for CH is getting him in the scorers column. Have him hit a layup or a dunk (needs to be an easy shot) and once he sees the ball go through the hoop, it takes the edge off for the rest of his shooting.

I’m sure it’s not like this all the time, but as an example in the Virginia game:

CH goes 0-5 to start the game (0-3 from 3pt land). The other two misses were a jumper and a hook shot.

He then gets a layup maybe 5 or so minutes into the 2nd half and (including that layup) goes 4-4 (2-2 from 3pt range).

Some guys just need that scoring monkey off their back and until that happens their shot doesn’t drop. It’s way easier to get into the scorers column with a dunk/layup than a 3.

I’m gonna continue to watch and see if it plays out like this in future games but I’ve definitely seen it before with CH.

Time to scheme up a layup for him then watch out!

Can I just go ahead and BEG that the Krush makes its roadtrip the Iowa game? Assuming the kids prefer a weekend roadtrip (I would!), these are the options this year:

Saturday 1/28 at Wisconsin - Meh
Saturday 2/4 - Ding ding ding!
Saturday 2/18 at Indiana - Probably hard to get tickets together
Sunday 2/26 at Ohio State - LONG roadtrip for a Sunday if you ask me...
Sunday 3/5 at Purdue - Also usually sold out

It's easily the best combination of a huge game where we might need the boost yet also an arena that isn't that hard to get tickets to. I'll be there, and I cannot wait, and I would love nothing more than to see thousands of Illini fans invade and paint the place orange! In February of 2005, there were 6,000 Illini fans plus the Krush in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and it might have been the most glorious thing I've ever seen.
I'll be there - it's a fun arena to trample the hopes and dreams of Hawkeyes fans in.

In responding to another poster about CH, I would like all to understand that CoHawk is the most visible player on the floor as he is involved in more plays than anyone else....and much of it without the ball in hand. Put that fact in tandem with CoHawk wanting to do everything he does as it needs doing and you have a player that is far more valuable to his team than scoring. From listening to his post-game comments after the VA. loss, you can tell that he feels responsible to providing poignant answers to questions that directly address the question asked. Because of he is so involved both physically and mentally, trying to make every move and position count and correct, our eyes are drawn to him and we see every play in which he is involved. His errors and misses get magnified, and his spectacular successes are remembered more clearly. And yet, he is not close to his potential and won't be for another 5 years or more. However, I , for one, am grateful that Coleman Hawkins wears the Orange and Blue and that I have had the opportunity to watch him play and grow for 3 seasons and maybe another....while giving him a big thank you and wishing him only the best for his future.

I think comparing Coleman and Kofi's draft outlook, while there are fairly different players, gives and insight to what NBA teams are looking for.

Kofi was 7 foot, 290, Coleman is 6'10, 225.

Coleman may finish the year at 10, 6 and 4.
Kofi was 20 and 10 every game...

The reason Coleman is intriguing to NBA teams is versatility. Coleman can guard 2 through 5 on defense and at 6'10 he has great length and athleticism at that size. Its not all about scoring 20 a game, because I don't think Coleman will, and I have doubts about his offensive game.

It's that he can pass and defend at 6'10. NBA teams want guys who can guard everyone and switch everything. Kofi could kill you on the inside but could only guard 5's...he was a huge liability on defense. Coleman does things that don't show up on the stat sheet every time.

A guy who I compare Coleman to is Jeremy Sochan. If he can impact a game like him, Coleman will be a 10 year pro.

The other point is there is little to zero chance kofi puts up 20/10 in nba. Kofi feasted on our cupcakes.

Hawk could/should put up 10/6/4

I will be escalated if Coleman puts up that stats in NBA. Not saying he can't but you pretty much have to be a starter or a strong rotation player to achieve that.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Early in the second half of Illinois’ game against UCLA, it needed some energy.
Brad Underwood knew who to go to. It was Sencire Harris, a guard who showed energy and tenacity since Underwood and Chester Frazier recruited him.
“I mean, he’s trying to rip the JV players’ heads off in practices,” Underwood said. “He’s kicking his butt and then it’s whoever he plays, it’s just that mentality. And I have a tendency to kind of like those guys.”
The freshman Harris was up to the challenge, and has grabbed hold of a rotation spot off the bench with the tenacity Underwood craves.
“I’ve always been that way,” Harris said. “I always want to take on the best player.”

He provided a spark, and Illinois went on a big run in the second half to get a win over a then-top 10 team and nearly won two games over top-20 teams in Las Vegas last weekend. It helped No. 16 Illinois move up the rankings, and the tournament was used as a measuring stick for a relatively young roster.
Harris stood out with his energy. He’s given himself an opportunity to be in the rotation and will likely be asked to bring some juice off the bench the rest of the season, starting with the game against Lindenwood (8 p.m. on Friday on Big Ten Network+).
“It’s everything,” Underwood said. “We’re looking for guys like that. We’re looking for those gritty, tough guys that, you know, impact a game without having to score it all the time.”

The CoHawk I have seen for the past couple of years and this season to date is a guy who is going to score beyond the arc if he is on and around the rim within 6 ft. Where can he improve? Obviously, by being money form 10-15 ft. which opponents have allowed and he does not shoot very often. Would love to see him fake from the arc, drive to 12 ft., and shoot a soft jumper from 12 ft. as much as 5 times a game. Opponents never cover him and once he drives, he will almost always pass or try to score at the rim. I lust to see him make them pay, but who knows what BU wants in that situation....I just see the opportunity too often and wish he would take the shot.

Along those lines, Coleman checks in today at #29 in Sam Vencenie's NBA Draft big board.

TSJ at #20 ("Illinois’ Terrence Shannon Jr. is the guy I’ve gotten the most positive notices about from scouts and college coaches in regard to improvement this season").

They don't cover him there because they want him to shoot that shot, and he doesn't shoot it because it is a bad shot. I agree that it would be a decent shot if it arrives late in the shot clock but he should not be shooting that most of the time it presents itself

I know what the analytics say, but if you have a 12 foot jumper in your bag, it's a better shot than driving it all the way into the paint and forcing something that isn't there. Guys like DeRozan, KD, and Devin Booker score 6-10 points a night on midrange shots - which is to say that the midrange game is not quite as dead as has been reported (it's not to say that Hawkins is of the same caliber as those guys.)

If he can get good enough to make one per game, it'll make everything easier for him. IMO it's the one thing standing in his way of All B1G First Team.

The definition of a good shot is 100% relative to the player who shoots it.

Absolutely!! But I will always believe CoHawk should take a handful of those unguarded jumpers in the lane every game. Unless he cannot hit 50%+ of them, which I can't imagine is the case, but we may never know as he takes none. It scores the same as a dunk and opens up more options when a defender has to deal with it. Let me have at the analytic who says it is a bad shot and I will beat him to death with that shot. For the right player, an 8-15 footer is 70% or better. CoHawk is good enough of a shooter to hit that %.

What? No. 8-15 footer for 70%+. Um…no. That’s exactly what BU does not want him doing. Or anyone.
First of all, very few would convert to the 70%+ you speak to. If they could….shoot it all day every day. That’s like hitting 3’s at a 50% clip. But no one shoots 8-15 footers at that rate.
CoHawk is currently rigid on offense…as are a few others. They haven’t found their rhythm on the offensive if they aren’t in transition. At least not yet.
Hell, the problem in the Virginia game was all of the forced 8-15 footers that were turn around fadeways….terrible, forced shots.
Check my history….I love the O&B. Rarely do I post anything “negative”. But the reality is there is at times very little flow to the offense when not in transition AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON.
It will come no doubt, but our success this season will likely be based on cutting, passing, open looks from three, and driving to the basket for relatively easy finishes. Right now we just aren’t in synch like we can (will) be.
Just my perspective.
