Different kind of player for sure, but DMW played 1-5, took on the toughest defensive assignment often, and had a streak where he was deadly from outside.
CH
Often assigned to effectively guard the other team’s best player - perimeter & bigs
Blocks shots
Key rebounding role (leads team in defensive boards, and with DD, leader in OR)
At 6’ 10”, often helps bring the ball up vs the press
Often starts the fast break
Often initiates the offense
Plays key role in swing passes and high-low
Leads team in assists
Key player in setting picks (+ P&R)
3-level scorer (yes, shot selection needs improvement)
Draws fouls; passable FT shooter (65%)
Team leader & on-court ‘traffic director’

I love me some DMW, but I don’t think he quite matches in the versatility department.

Coleman Hawkins: I’m trying to think of a past Illini who has been relied upon to do so many different things on the basketball court...

Drawing a blank so far.
I would say some parallels to Chester

Great defender, gave great effort, but challenged offensively.

Hawkins leads us in rebounds(offensive and defensive ), blocked shots, is basically tied with TSJ in assists, gets the toughest challenge on defense, helps break the press, is the pivot man in their offensive sets....

People have a tendency to focus on the missed shots and occasional head scratching passes, but if you had to point to one guy who's irreplaceable on THIS team....it's probably CH.

I think we go into Purdue at 13-6, which at the start of the season, I thought that would have meant we were playing for a share of the championship.

But in this reality, Purdue will have locked the championship up already and we'll be playing for second place. Lose and we fall somewhere between 3-5. A win would also bump us up a seed in the NCAA, from a 5 to a 4 or from a 6 to a 5.
In my opinion the hardest part of our schedule is coming up. I just hope that we get to 20 wins. Anything over that would be great. It would be nice to get a BIG road win or two against Indiana or Purdue. Rutgers scares me stiff. They are silly good when they are on.

Rutgers is dangerous and I believe they are the 2nd best team in the BIG. If we could somehow knock them off and defeat Indiana or Purdue at their place, I could see us going 12-8. I think 13-7 is a stretch. Purdue has this thing just about locked but I guess stranger things have happened.

13-7 might be on the more optimistic side of probable but not unrealistic. I would be kind of bummed if we just went 4-4 to finish the season.

Minnesota - Should be a relatively relaxing W
Rutgers - They are an elite defensive team. Agree it's a scary matchup. But Iowa beat them by 11 both times they played each other. And Rutgers allowed the Hawkeyes to put up 92(!) in their most recent match up. We're currently favored.
@PSU - We're a different team than the last time we played. Should win this one.
@IU - Obviously an uphill climb. Taking the Hoosiers for now.
Northwestern - See "@PSU"
@OSU - Been unimpressed by them all year. They'll be favored by a point or so but this is a game we should win.
Mich - Could see this being something of a senior night trap game before Purdue. But still have to think we can beat them at home.
@PU - Not going to pick us to win this one. But it wouldn't shock me if we did. Purdue will probably have the B1G championship and a #1 seed locked up by this point, so we should have more to play for.

Should be an exciting stretch of basketball.

5-3 would be solid, 6-2 would be amazing all things considered.

For me, Rutgers is scary because you know it’s so difficult to blow them out. It’s almost always coming down to a few possessions because their defense shows up nearly every night I’m glad it’s at home and not at Rutgers

My prediction is we win all of the home games and @PSU and @OSU

If your prediction is correct and Illinois wins all remaining games, except Indiana and Purdue away, Illinois will have 13
wins and be tied with Iowa, Rutgers and perhaps Indiana. If Indiana can beat MSU away from home, they will likely have 14
wins and wind up alone in second place.

If there are three teams tied, Iowa has beat Rutgers twice so they get the double bye. If there are four teams tied, then Rutgers
(vs Indiana) would have one win and Illinois (vs Rutgers) would also have one win. My understanding is that since Illinois would have the head
to head win vs Rutgers, they would advance (let me know if I am wrong). Lose to either Rutgers or Penn State (or any other team except Indiana or Purdue), and Illinois has no chance for the double bye in the Big Ten tournament.

Fan since Kiwane Garris
I love when we get baskets in the post through Dainja. Would be ecstatic if Hawkins scored more out of the low post also. Can we do a better job getting them the ball down there?

At the same time, whenever I see our guys trying to establish post position, I think about this clip of Barkley and Shaq explaining keys to being a post scorer. "Get to where you want to get." "Lock your defender out." "Don't let them move you."

Any rumblings on when Kofi's jersey will get raised? Not many opportunities left this year. Ayo's was raised pretty quick last year, although his commute is a little shorter than Kof's.
