Love our coach. Would have been real easy to say the wrong things there. Great professional answer to that question that happens to be full of truths.
The numbers don’t back it up. Paul scored more, and was more efficient doing so. In the head to head matchup they were pretty even. (CP3 was a soph. DW a Jr) Rodger Powell dominated that game, they also got a combined 7, 3 pointers from Head & McBride. The entire Illini starting lineup went on to play in the NBA. CP3 was the only Wake player from that season to make the NBA. We were simply a much better team. That was what was so great about that year. We weren’t a one man show. The pieces all fit, and they played extremely well together.

The key there is that he was more efficient in doing so. CP3 was an incredible 3 point shooter in college, shot better from the field, and was much better at the stripe. His scoring wasn’t about volume, he actually averaged fewer attempts per game than Deron. Not sure you can draw any conclusions from CP scoring more, in this game or the season, when you also acknowledge the bolded. DW didn't have to score and would have hurt the team by scoring more. He didn't to do anything more than be who he was. Put him on a lesser team and I believe his individual stats would explode.
The key to ball pressure is passing. Make them pay for the pressure by ending one on one at the basket. Roster is full of finishers at the basket.
If I was his image consultant, I’d advise he stop going to the nose so often…
(and no more press conference raspberries).
Seriously, though, I’m starting to think this group of players may surprise the doubters!
My main worry is handling fierce ball pressure - but I think we have the talent, size, depth, and veteran experience to match just about anyone.
Paul shot the ball more than Deron in college- he just got fouled more- Paul also shot 44% from 2 in his last year while Deron shot close to 50% from two. Deron was much better finishing at the rim and avg more assists. Deron was also a bigger/more physical player Paul was a better three point shooter and free throw shooter no doubt. The key there is that he was more efficient in doing so. Again, this isn’t a slight against Deron. I just don’t think people on this board acknowledge just how good CP3 was/is because we want so badly to believe our guy was superior.
ball handling guard?? Does on forget that COLEMAN HAWKINS WAS A GUARD . He will be a big asset in pressure situations
Agree that going to the nose even once is too often. The raspberry reaction was pretty much what I was feeling at the time too.

My biggest concern is end if game FT shooting. Unless there is drastic improvement i dont want Ty or Harris with the ball and at the line. I am not crazy about Hawkins at the line either.

I have a sense that BU wanted to make this offseason and next season about establishing an enduring Every Day Guys culture above all else. Sorry if too Pollyanna.

Hawkins decision making is questionable / lead team in turnovers last year. Much rather see Hawkins around the lane both offensively and defensivelyball handling guard?? Does on forget that COLEMAN HAWKINS WAS A GUARD . He will be a big asset in pressure situations
Great ambassador for the Illini and the University of Illinois. One of my all time favorites.
I’m not sure what to make out of any of this. The AD office was just in such a hurry to get him out they didn’t follow any kind of normal protocol?not sure where else to put this but the Huggins saga rolls on:
Huggins calls resignation letter 'false statement'
Bob Huggins said he did not draft or review the statement that announced his resignation as West Virginia's men's basketball coach last month.www.espn.com
Feel like he may have meant Ayo was the best finisher of games he’s ever seen (most clutch), rather than best finisher at the hoop.
Have you seen him handle 1on1 full court vs pressureJust beating a dead horse with the PG topic, but, does the staff not feel TSJ could assume the lead guard role full time? I know he’s limited to his dominate hand.
Why not put TSJ at the 1 and Ty at the 3? Ty can still relieve some pressure with his ability to create and handle.
flash back to Purdue game and Newman breaking away for easy dunks...Have you seen him handle 1on1 full court vs pressure
I think he could've dominated more than he did but chose to defer to Dee and Luther because that was better for the team. Which is just another sign of his greatness. But I think there's a bit of revisionist history happening regarding his performance AT ILLINOIS. I don't have a problem with a person calling him our best pg ever but it's definitely not as cut and dry as some make it out to be. At the time, many people didn't even consider him to be the best player on his own team.
