Love our coach. Would have been real easy to say the wrong things there. Great professional answer to that question that happens to be full of truths.

Agree 100%. He's prepared --you know he's thinking during those questions, but staying in his lane.
I could see his thought bubble looking like this [How do I dodge this while staying positive about where we're headed]

Kinda makes me wonder if he heads off really ugly questions before he does interviews. Would anyone ask about Tyler's promotion? Seems pointless to bring it up, but I'm sure he has an answer ready.

Hawkins decision making is questionable / lead team in turnovers last year. Much rather see Hawkins around the lane both offensively and defensively
Hawkins should be the 4th or 5th option on the floor for a good team.

Nothing he's shown us so at the college level says he's even a positive offensive player. Honestly, his poor decision making with turnovers and ill advised 3pt attempts really hurt the offense last year. Plus he has a tendency to stop the ball on the perimeter just to pump fake or hold the ball for 3 seconds and let the defense reset before trying to force a pass into tight coverage.

It's not all bad because he can do a lot of good things on the defensive end but I still don't know if I remember a more overrated player by the illini fanbase.

He wasn't even the most overrated player on last year's team.

Just beating a dead horse with the PG topic, but, does the staff not feel TSJ could assume the lead guard role full time? I know he’s limited to his dominate hand.

Why not put TSJ at the 1 and Ty at the 3? Ty can still relieve some pressure with his ability to create and handle.
Really struggled when he was amassed to bring it up last year, IMO this is why showed me he was def not headed to the NBA.

flash back to Purdue game and Newman breaking away for easy dunks...
I wouldn't play Shannon at point for other reasons, but I think that the team as a whole failed both in terms of prep and execution during that game and Shannon just wore it. Beating a press isn't just a thing that one dude does in most cases, it's a team effort. And the team failed.

not sure where else to put this but the Huggins saga rolls on:
This is all just legal maneuvering at this point - he knows he’s not coaching at WVU again but someone got in his ear that he should have gotten a buyout or force them to fire him and give him a buyout so his lawyer is bringing up the technicality that he never “signed” a resignation letter etc

So it will drag on for a bit - but they can likely fire him for cause if they want to - so I’m not sure what leverage Huggins has at this point- but the lawyers will try to get some money out of it I’m sure

Shannon’s weakness is ball handling and playmaking. Shannon’s biggest strength is getting downhill and bullying his way to the basket. He is no where close to a “playmaker” at this time. He either shoots a 3 or puts his head down and goes hard to the basket (out of control more than I’d like). It’s why he isn’t in the NBA. Shannon needs to rectify this if he wants to be in NBA

Ty has playmaking skills. He can go hard to basket, he can handle the ball in traffic & see the floor and those around him. Ty has the skills you need in a player that can make others better. Ty’s only weakness is his shooting. Call me an optimist but I predict Ty will be a better shooter this season. I think Ty is gonna be great.

Im very bullish on Hawkins too. He has got better every year. By the end of last year he finally became effective pulling up for short shots on his drives. It’s the part of his game that has been missing. I think he improves even more in this area. It would be cool if he could develop a little floater too. And sure. I’d love to see him improve his 3 point shot at least 5%. If he does all these things he is a lottery pick.

As far as NBA talent I’m most optimistic about Hawkins and Ty. But, all 3 have deficiencies that are currently keeping them from the league

Shannon is actually not a bad playmaker or passer for 2 guard. He still averaged almost 3 assists a game on a team that didn't particularly move or shoot well (basically had to create those opportunities himself). Its not where you would want it to be for a PG and the ball handling would also be an issue but I don't think that's what held him back from the NBA. Consistency with shooting and ball handling (especially going right) are two of his bigger downsides right now.

I agree with your takes on Ty and Coleman. I definitely liked seeing the improvement in aggressiveness by Coleman at the end of the year. If he can get in the paint not many guys are going to be able to stop his little turnaround jumper.

I don’t have any vivid memories of him struggling with it. I had to work during the Purdue game last year that the other poster referenced. So in your opinion could Ty do better?
It was ugly. He was directly responsible for about 4 to 5 turnovers and 8 to 10 points off of them. I think that Ty will have those same issues. He's going to get pressured and doubled each and every game until he proves that he can handle it and make them pay for doing it. That's a lot to ask of this kid(along with everything else that comes with playing the position).

You're being tough on a guy that was being asked to do just about everything. He was handling the ball a TON for a guy his size, which included breaking the press. Quite often, he was directing traffic on the offensive end.

He averaged 10 Points per game, 6 Rebinds per game, 3 assists per game, over 1 block per game and still shot 44% from the field. He also played damn near 33 minutes per game. All of those numbers improved over the year prior.

We don't have one player on the roster that can duplicate that production across the board.

He was being asked to do WAY too much.

TSJ and CH were the two most affected by the lack of having a legitimate PG.

TSJ is not a guy that does a great job shooting off the dribble. He's a knock down shooter and that comes from a guard finding him. He struggles as a playmaker because he's really limited to his left hand. He is a phenomenal athlete, but his skills are limited. If he had the ability to shoot off of the dribble consistently and use both hands effectively....he would have been a lottery pick.

CH was asked to do everything because that piece was missing.

We are one legitimate PG from probably having two guys drafted and from being a legitimate top 10 team. There's a reason that CH required(for lack of a better term) a significant improvement at that position.

I feel Ty could do better because he simply appears more comfortable dribbling in space with either hand. He doesn’t finish left often, but he seems to handle left just fine.

Purdue was in full court man. The standard play vs full court man is to clear and let your dude bring it up 1 on 1 in the middle 1/3 of the court. This provides the most space and is generally advantage offense. The last thing you want to do against full court man is bring more defenders up by adding more offensive players. If they were trapping it would be different. They locked us up 94 feet 1 on 1.

Yep, good call… the old zig-zag drill…keep it away from the sidelines that’s about all you have to do if it’s obviously a standard full court man.

Lol I guess you could bring 4 up and go Flutie to Phelan in ‘84. :)
Even better yet have someone step out of bounds and catch a pass before they break…lol (that’s a fun one. totally unnecessary…but fun IMO.)

Do any of our insides have any insight on the rumors of Shannon breaking/injuring his left hand? Apparently he was seen wearing a hard cast?
