And I'm still sitting here listening to the same old critiques of Jayden Epps when our options for next year are obviously and unambiguously far, far less promising.
I would note that, notwithstanding the glaring difference in FT%, Sincere shot a higher percentage from 3 than did Epps. Sincere also had a better A/TO ratio with a slight edge in A/40 min. I'll admit that Epps offense won us the Texas game, but Sincere's defense won us the UCLA game. While Epps provided scoring and would be fine as a 2 guard, I just don't think he would be the answer at PG this year. He certainly was not an offense-running distributer. That was fine last year when we lacked shooting/scoring but would not expect him to fit well this year.

Sincere shot 18 percent from 3 in B10 play, was 4 for 20 not 1 for 5 and Ty did not even attempt a jump shot all season for a reason, and had a 58% conversion rate at the rim. Ty does a lot well but perimeter and FT shooting are not amoung them. I truly do hope your right and I dont bet against my team but I do have a basis for my expectations. Ty and Harris are athletic, good on D, create havoc, and Ty can play multiple positions, pass well, plus he is hell on the boards. Thats what I expect from Ty. I do hope you are correct on the shooting but that seems unlikely. One thing I actually do love about Ty is he plays to his strengths and doesn't take shots that could be better fir the team if others took them. I honestly don't think he took a jump shot all season. I recall someone said that having see his shot chart. He would fir sure be a pass first PG and not force things. I will give you that. I just don't see him in down the stretch in close games.
My comparison still valid, maybe more so, since Sincere shot better than 32% from 3 against lesser competition - you are not defended from the FT line.

I never said he couldn't improve at the FT line. I also hope you are correct. I still stand by what I said too. In close games we need better FT shooters than 60% like DGL or Harmon at pg if we are up a few points. Hopefully if they do bring it up its tossed to Domask to get fouled at 87 %. Go Illini!

This is just one game’s stat line but it shows that he’s capable:

Sencire scored 29 points in a win against St. Ignatius, including 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line, 7-for-11 on 2-point attempts and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.
He was also 6/6 from the line against St. Edward, 2/2 ft against Lima in the state semifinal (also went 3/6 from 3), 1/2 ft in the final (2/5 from 3). That’s all I found though but it’s better than I would have guessed. I don’t think we’ve seen anywhere close to the best of Harris’ offensive ability.

ILL-ohio st B1G championship game from 2021 on BTN… this team was so stacked 🥹🥲
I was re-watching along with you.
* Clearly 8-deep on that squad
* So many different offensive weapons
* Stout "D", with the big stopper in the middle
* Up tempo on "O"

Curbelo looked like a real PG. Controlled the tempo. Penetrated. Led us on the break. (And he couldn't shoot beyond 8-10 feet. Cue Ty Rodgers...)

A lot of guys struggle shooting freshmen year if they aren't used to the muscle mass they've added. It's hard to relearn the touch you need when all the sudden the ball flies off your hands a bit easier.

Really hoping DGL is the guy to fill Belo’s role of coming off the bench as a spark with his quickness. Would be a dramatic change to Ty’s bully ball. Difficult to imagine roles at this point. See 11 players as possible contributors but think that is unlikely. 8-9 would be standard but have difficulty seeing which.
Hansberry as fourth man behind Hawk, Dain, and Q for 4-5?

Luke and Marcus sure case at the 3.

Then we have TJ and Ty at the 1 and 2. But how will time split with DGL, Sencire, and Justin? Don’t see any of these guys not pushing and capable. Think they all have something to offer but some will not get the chance. DGL will be better out of the gate than Skyy but may not play. Practices will be brutal and I think the pessimists are missing the upside of the total roster.

And you know this certainty how, Gritty? Have you been in Ubben watching Rodgers practice at the 1? Did you watch him play at the 1 in high school? To predict failure is one thing, but to be an absolutist with no hope for success, coming from a place without actual proof, is another…

I am estatic and think we had a good off season simply because TSJ and Hawk came back. But Ty at PG was not the plan and is not ideal. The reality is Epps left, we whiffed on adding an experienced PG so Ty will be our PG to start the season. I for one hope DGL can assume that role asap. I am confident we will add an experienced PG after this season. Ty has three years left but I certainly do not expect him to be starting at PG after this season for obvious reasons. We are blessed to have Ty as an option for this season since they whiffed on Dennis and while DGL gets better. If Ty was a better PG than Epps I think BU would have played Ty last year. Don't you think? Ty is our Swiss Army knife, can back up PG as needed and is very valuable but he would be better served crashing the boards in a position better suited for his skill set.
If I am not mistaken, TY did start to play the point a little after skyy left the program.

And if we are running a pick and rolls based offense not a motion offense, Ty is perfect for it.

It'll be interesting to see this play out. Could see Ty's man sagging off and taking the pnr away. This happened to Belo later in his tenure here. Or I could see Ty using that extra space to bully ball his way to the basket.

I don't think we have either. However, I doubt he will ever is a player that teams will be afraid to leave open . I loved the defense Harris brought and I am a fan of his. However I expect his PT to decrease vs last season.

How is that? He didn't take a jump shot all season? His defender can go under all day until he is a threat to hit a shot, which he never attempted last season. Pgs need to be a threat to shoot. We have been down this road with Groce and his PGs. We need DGL or Harmon to pop. Ty can back up but he is not what BU wanted at PG. He whiffed. Thats pretty obvious and to deny it means your chugging orange Kool Aid. I love Ty and I am estatic he is versatile and own our side. He was not the plan at PG for this season but now he may be. He won't be the plan as the starting PG after this season. PG isn't what he is best at. If you belive that you lying to yourself or have not seen many elite B10 pgs play. Ty is a 3 or 4.

WRT Epps, I ton of fans appreciate what he brought. Kid is a bucket (despite some offensive struggles). He'll probably average near 20 for the Hoyas.

But he's certainly not a PG, has work to do defensively and he bucked instruction while he was here. Gotta look at the whole package. If he matures, he'll be an outstanding player.
Unless he refuses to go into a game occasionally .....which will have some effect on what he averages

Curbelo slithered rather than bullied his way to the basket, but he made it work....I think Ty will too.

The Illini did not have a PG last year. Epps was a Combo Guard trying to play Point. Epps averaged 1.5 assists a game. Ty Rodgers averaged 1 and he was not trying to set people up, as a PG. He should be a huge upgrade in the assist department. I Love his game, he is a special talent. His hustle and desire more than makes up for any shortcomings he may have.
I hope this is true, however we don't know that yet.

He doesn't have to be an elite point guard just one that can run the offense. There is much more involved than shooting. Belo was a terrible shooter when hexwas playing his best.
