Saw an Ant Wright tweet that players can now wear any number 0-99!
...
An unfortunate change IMO. I thought it was great for the referee to be able to show the offending players number visually. Now they will either need to show the digits in sequence, or move to a system using the thumb as a five.

Many of you will remember Rich McBride

McBride Joins EIU Men's Basketball Staff

(Given my age, the first season I truly remember was 2001, for reference.)

Few players frustrated me more at the time than Rich, but I think that was because my expectations were so unreasonably high for Illini basketball ... literally all I had ever known was dominance, and the McBride/Pruitt/Randle/etc. crew was always going to be the face of the "beginning of the end" for me as a young fan. However, MAN did that guy look good shooting a three when he could get open! Good for Rich!!

Fun trip down memory lane, I was at this game. The loudest crowd I have ever heard in person was when McBride drained a three for the lead just after 1:58:08. However, I recommend starting it at 1:57:05 for the full effect! It has gotten close a few times over the last couple of years, but man ... I just don't think Assembly Hall/SFC has gotten that loud since about 2007 or so, unfortunately.

The Gavitt games just doesn’t excite me like the B1G-ACC Challenge did. Perhaps if it were the old Big East I knew growing up, but the current version feels like a B1G-Patriot League Challenge or something.
I kind of agree, but we really need some type of "challenge," IMO. It gives you a baked-in Power Six opponent, and you don't have to worry about scheduling logistics every year to make sure fans have an exciting game. For example, I bet it took a decent amount of effort to set up our recent home-and-home series with Arizona and Tennessee, whereas the DIA didn't have to do a thing for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge or the Gavitt Games.

With that said, I am still shocked that there was not a Big Ten/Big XII Challenge announced recently. We're both FOX-affiliated conferences, right?? Using the new conferences, you could get some great matchups from this hypothetical lineup I came up with on the spot (Northwestern and Minnesota get the boot for finishing at the bottom of the standings, lol):

Illinois vs. Arizona (shocking amount of history in the last 25 years)
Indiana vs. Houston (Kelvin Sampson angle)
Iowa vs. Oklahoma State (wrestling royalty)
Maryland vs. Iowa State (both pretty good in the last 25 years, both majorly insecure)
Michigan vs. Kansas State (another random-ish one)
Michigan State vs. Baylor (both good, both green, two of the longest tenured coaches)
Nebraska vs. Colorado (border rivalry)
Ohio State vs. Cincinnati (instate rivalry)
Oregon vs. Utah (former Pac-12 matchup)
Penn State vs. West Virginia (border rivalry)
Purdue vs. Texas Tech (both recently good)
Rutgers vs. UCF (some matchup had to be random...)
UCLA vs. Kansas (only two real Blue Bloods)
USC vs. Arizona State (former Pac-12 matchup)
Washington vs. TCU (purple...)
Wisconsin vs. BYU (the Mormons come to Mad Town)

(Iowa/Iowa State is already a regular game, so it couldn't be wrapped up in the Challenge.)

I don’t disagree about needing some sort of conference challenge, but I don’t pay attention to the other games in the Gavitt Games like I did the B1G-ACC Challenge (other than they’re B1G teams playing a game). Against the ACC, I cared if Northwestern beat Wake Forest or if Penn State beat Clemson. Those games mattered because I wanted the B1G to win the challenge. I can’t tell you which conference “won” any of the Gavitt Games.

No to be clear, I totally agree. The Big Ten and the Big East are just too different in a number of ways ... the Big East is smaller, the schools are fundamentally different, the current group is way newer, etc. A lot of Big Ten fans, especially those over 35, will still view many of those Gavitt opponents with the excitement they would view a good mid-major ... because that's what a lot of them were for many of the years of our fandoms.

I loved the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, and I am sad to see it go. With the Pac-12 dissolving and the SEC likely off the table due to TV rights, a Big Ten/Big XII Challenge seems like a no-brainer to me. You could even get some cool neutral site games from time to time, such as UCLA/Arizona in Vegas, Nebraska/Colorado in Denver, Maryland/West Virginia in DC, Illinois and any eager opponent to get to play in Chicago, etc.

Rees Woodcock has Quincy Guerrier getting the start over Dain Dainja in Rees's projected starting lineup. Rees had CH starting at #5, where CH would be a #4 if Dainja starts. Any comments on this? (I figured Dainja would start most games, especially against bigger and heavier centers, like most teams have.)

Citing Woodcock as an authority? Face palm.

Does mentioning a thing Woodcock said (that the poster doubts) and asking if anyone has comments count as "citing as an authority" now?

CJW, my answer would be that many here don't put a lot of stock in what he has to say, but until you know that, it makes sense to ask... In the future you can insulate yourself by leaving Woodcock's name out of it and just asking 'Do you guys think Dain or Guerrier is more likely to start?', and then watch all the real authorities weigh in.

1. Rodgers
2. Shannon Jr.
3. Domask
4. Goode
5. Hawkins

I'd bet money that is our starting 5 pretty much all year - assuming no injuries and won't be adjusted based on matchups, because Underwood has never done that

I hope Hawkins works with Dain on post moves this off-season and becomes more aggressive around the rim.
