Looking at the stats per 40 minutes played or 100 possessions really drops Hawkins toward the bottom. A lot of his numbers look good because he plays so many minutes.
Hawkins offensive rating is only ahead of walkons, dead last among scholarship players.
He's an Illini, so I am all for big things for him.
Leaving this here (without commentary)…

Can someone point me to a free site that provide relative conference ratings now that Sagarin is no longer doing CBB? i.e. How the BigTen compares to the ACC, BigE, SEC, etc. I liked how Sagarin used weighted averages with the middle teams counting the most.

zip to do with this season's squad, but hell, yeah:
Assistant Coach Bob Hull, pictured above in the blue cap with his wife Cindy Klose (former WCIA TV anchor) was my teacher/coach for Baseball, Basketball and Golf ---- 3 of my 4 one-hour electives --- while earning my Accounting degree in Champaign!

Sure wish he would have also taught Bowling. I got A's in his three classes, and a B in Bowling! He's a really good guy!!!

Not many other coaches from that team that are still with us. Also, wonder if Mary Henson really needed a nametag for that event.

Fun fact - Brad Underwood is the same age as Doug Altenberger. Well, one month older. If you remember that '84 team you are getting a little long in the tooth. If you remember his dad donning the Orange and Blue you probably don't have that many teeth left.
That '83-'84 team was my first year at the UI as a 25 year old transfer first generation college student from the Northeast who knew nothing about Illinois or the Beloved. The Chief, and the football and basketball teams bore their way into my heart. I will be buried someday in Orange & Blue. "Hail, Alma Mater . . . "

Altenberger should go down in history for his Illini heart - an undersized 6' 4" small forward who played with the heart of a giant.

Alrighty folks... As of December 18th, 2023 our beloved are ranked #13 in the AP Poll. As our guy Rosenthal pointed out, if we are able to take care of business against Mizzou & FDU, we are looking at a top 10 ranking come January 5th. But before we get into that, we must pump the brakes. Someone needs to remind this 2023-24 Illini squad that they have "hair-on-fire deficiencies", are "totally, unavoidably screwed", and are "not a basketball team", and this isn't working. Sorry Gritty, I couldn't help it.

Bump.

While I like how this season has played out so far, and the metrics like us, things can go downhill in a flash. You simply never know.

Let’s not break an ankle while we dance on the grave of Gritty’s post.

Think our success this year may hinge on the defense on opposing guards. Purdue will win when Smith and Loyer have their way. With MSU it is Walker and Hoggard. Ty and TJ are the best defensive duo in the BIG. If the opposing PG gets shut down, they have trouble. Marquette managed to switch off and Kolek and Jones killed us. We aren’t built to stop Edey (nor is anyone else) but if we can limit his touch’s we have a chance. Trent’s defense on opposing PGs was probably underrated by us (not the coaches) and TJ’s defense is different but certainly looks comparable. Don’t think anyone is going to enjoy playing us.

After watching Purdue beat Arizona yesterday.. we better forget about Edey and worry more about guarding Lawyer and Smith...

Edey will get his no matter the BT team. What you hope for is early foul trouble. Smith and Loyer had their dream game. They can miss shots as well. I have watched several PU games and watching Edey go over the defenders back is never called. If you were BU do you go right at Edey to get him in foul trouble?

We also have a tough game against NW.

Interesting website (maintained by a Los Alamos AI engineer/Purdue grad) that gives an AI generated write-up of the team and each of its opponents. Illini write-up seem pretty spot on.

100%. I think it was LaTulip who said on one of the pods last year in Purdue’s wins Edey got 22 and 13, and in their losses he got 23 and 13. And in their only loss this year I think he went for like 35 and 14 (was an OT game, but still). He’s going to get his.

The key to Purdue is shutting down their guards. I love Braden Smith and he’s tough as hell but he can still get sped up and he’s only 6’ 170 or whatever he is. Ty and TJ should be able to bother him with their size and athleticism. Loyer has better size but lacks strength and quickness. Whoever isn’t guarding Smith should be able to hound Loyer.

And Coleman does as good a job as any guarding Edey straight up and will make Edey guard in space on the other end. I actually really like how we match up with Purdue. I only wish we had Sencire when we played them.

got to ask - who does Illinois/Underwood use to go right at Edey to get him in foul trouble? My interpretation is a BIG. Maybe the best chance of that is TSjr beating his man and Edey helping out (fouling)....

Not sure if you want to go right at him. You have to make him move his feet. This is one scenario where Coleman needs to be a 3-point threat. Edey won't want to leave the paint. You are more likely to draw a foul on him while he recovers/helps on drivers than trying to attack him in the post. He's too big to have to move much around the basket.
We have to guard the 3-point line. The big guy is going to score. You can't let Smith and Loyer go off too. Northwestern beat them in part because Purdue were 5-19 from the arc that day, and Northwestern went 10-20. (Edey had 35 points)
