Coleman feels like Brian Randle sometimes. Great athleticism but struggles to apply it effectively in basketball.

Coleman

Strengths
- handles ball very well for 6'10"
- great leaping ability
- very agile and fast for 6'10"
- can make the spectacular pass
- willing to guard anyone 1-5
- reasonable 3 point shooter when he is stationary and open
- cares about winning
- team first attitude
- great shot blocker

Weakness
- mediocre post game
- reasonable but not elite 3 point shooter. Should not be forcing difficult 3 pointers
- turnover prone while passing
- too emotional over referee calls

TSJ has developed nice mid range game this season. Wish Coleman had done same.

Coleman is at his best when he lets the game come to him.
Where in the hell have you seen TSJ with a mid range game??? He’s either shooting a three or driving to the basket. There is no in between and he still can’t handle the ball with his right hand. Even when he goes to the right side of the basket he still puts it up with his left instead of his right

Terrance coming in at #5. Don't look at number 10 or number 2.

Edey confirmation comfortably sitting at#1. No surprise there.
Does Shannon play for Illinois or Tennessee? 🤦🏼‍♂️

Yeah, when that happened, it didn't look like a 4 to 6 week thing. The team is just now starting to come nicely together and guys are figuring out their roles. With all due respect to Nico, with the conference season going into full effect in two weeks.....if he's still in a boot at that time, redshirt him(if they can). He had a nice game against lesser competition, but, to me, the roles have been defined.

Redshirts are a weird thing is this era. Everyone is on a one year at a time contract.

He was never going to play much. He had several good minutes against a really bad opponent. Even Coleman looks like a NBA Allstars against Quad4 teams. Enough. We have our 8 or 9 player. My goodness Dainja got 4 minutes against Tennessee, explain that one. Nicco may have his time in 2 years.

In 6 games played this year, Coleman has 12 turnovers - 2.0 per game.

Just for fun, I thought I’d compare some fan favorites in their final years…
3.32 Ayo
2.85 Dee
2.79 Deron
2.33 TSJ (so far)

OK, that was fun! Now, let us carry on with the mantra that CoHawk is a turnover machine…

You can't compare turn overs per game because each player has different usage. TOV% is a better metric. So lets look at that.
As you can see CH is much worse than all of those players except Deron with only a marginal difference.
TOV%

2024
CH 19.4
TSJ 12.4
2023
CH 20.6
TSJ 14.8
2021
Ayo 15.7
2005
Dee 15.5
Deron 19.3

He has already used a redshirt year. Not sure he'd want another.

If he’s not going to play, he’d be wise to take the option of a medical redshirt. Granted, the option of “playing overseas” is a lot less daunting for a kid who is playing overseas while he is in college. Going pro in Europe would be a homecoming for him.
Redshirt would just give him more options down the line. Guess we will have to wait and see what the doctors think is feasible. Even when the fracture heals, it’s going to take some time to get his conditioning back.

Need help from my fellow Illini fans-

What is the best way to secure close parking for an individual game? Buying Tix for my parents (less walking the better)

As of December 16, we are one of only 10 teams in the KenPom top 25 for both offensive and defensive efficiency.
If offered that before the season started, I would have taken that deal.

Recent trend has been our friend on the offensive side of the ball, and the defense has been in the top 20 all season so far.

Let's keep getting better. Onward and upward...

I know that saying anything that could be interpreted as a slight against Da'Monte around here is kinda like sticking your hand in a nest of hornets, but Coleman isn't an offensive liability, much less an offensive liability to the degree Da'Monte was.

To me, the big difference (besides DMFW being an unassailable legend), is that Damonte was clearly the 5th option offensively when he was on the floor. I think Coleman has been at his best this year when he has dominated on defense and been an “only if he’s wide open” option on offense. Further, I think the frustration stems from the fact that this does not align with expectations (that he would be 2nd or 3rd option offensively) people had for this season.

This is interesting. When I watch the games when Dain is on the floor it looks at times like he is out of position, over commits, and allows easy baskets at the rim. So this all jives with the data above. However when I look at the numbers on sports-reference.com, something different shows up.

In the advanced metrics Dain's DRtg, DBPM are both better than Coleman's. As well as BPM. smh. I'm not sure how to reconcile these differences. Anyway.

Looking at the stats per 40 minutes played or 100 possessions really drops Hawkins toward the bottom. A lot of his numbers look good because he plays so many minutes.
Hawkins offensive rating is only ahead of walkons, dead last among scholarship players.
He's an Illini, so I am all for big things for him.
