It's a pretty down year for the conference overall so not sure why they can't go 7-0 this month.

I'm honestly only afraid of at Maryland. They own us and seem to have our number. I think we go into breslin and congratulate izzo on his 700th win in glorious Illinois fashion.... With a statement win!

I love this team. 😂😂😂

Rooted for NW last night and Nebraska tonight (Takes scalding shower). We got 1 of 2. The league is still in play. Hurts so bad with those losses at NW and to Maryland at home, but we’re a game back atm. Let’s go on the back half!

I know, I know, this is out of town stupid, but David Cobb of CBS Sports had this to say about Illinois in his power rankings. He has them 9th, but it’s incredibly dumb.

With Terrence Shannon Jr. regaining his form after a missing a month, Illinois is back on track to compete for the Big Ten title and an excellent NCAA Tournament seed. But much like with Alabama last season, everything Illinois accomplishes will be tainted by the star player's unsavory off-court entanglements. Last week: 12

I don't think that is dumb at all. Right or wrong, TJs accomplishments are tainted by the charges against him. Tainted if he is guilty, and tainted if the charges are bogus.

I mean.....if this teams ascends to the level that we all hope and he gets back on an All American performance level....isn't he telling the truth? Any outsider will start their sentence with "Yeah, but..."

Take the O & B goggles off for a second and really think about it. If Edey had this hanging over his head, what would you be saying?

Thanks for assuming I’d automatically think a player shouldn’t be allowed to play while be afforded due process. Much appreciated.

Reddit saying this spells the end of CBB experience/march madness as we know it. I am too dumb to understand the intricacies of the current landscape, and way too dumb to understand why this would change it. Anyone here have any intel to help me understand?

Insiders, if you know any info it'd be much appreciated!

Nobody would hurt my feelings at all by telling me I'd feel different if it were Edey and not Shannon. If TJ got a papercut I'd probably rush to his aid if possible. Edey has a papercut? Now where did I put that lemon juice....

My juvenile sense of humor likes a lot of Jacka$$ stunts, but there are a few skits that make even me turn away. Your post reminded me of one of them.

Just for fun, I thought I would post the Illini records through the first Big Ten games in some (at least mildly) successful past seasons for reference:

2001: 8-2. Big Ten champions, #1 seed, Elite Eight.
2002: 5-5. Big Ten champions, #4 seed, Sweet Sixteen. Wow, that team came on late!
2003: 6-4. Second in Big Ten, BTT champions, #4 seed, Second Round.
2004: 7-3. Big Ten champions, #5 seed, Sweet Sixteen.
2005: 10-0. Big Ten champions, BTT champions, #1 seed, National Championship Game appearance.
2006: 6-4. Second in Big Ten, #4 seed, Second Round.
2021: 7-3. "Second" in Big Ten, BTT champions, #1 seed, Second Round.
2022: 8-2. Big Ten champions, #4 seed, Second Round.
2024: 7-3. TBD.

So, it really goes to show you that the halfway mark is simply that ... HALF of your season. We have had plenty of teams (like 2002 and 2004) gel to go on to hang banners. While there have been individual things to nitpick here and there, any "discomfort" among our fan base about a 7-3 start to Big Ten play without questions speaks to the standards of this program being raised back up where they belong!!

It hurts my soul to see a 15 year gap in the data points between 2006 and 2021. This post alone shows the undeniable progress BU has made with the basketball program.

The only aspect of major college revenue sports the NCAA actually has control of in 2024 is March Madness. It's their TV contract, their money, their show. The B1G and SEC don't get to dictate terms to the NCAA on how March Madness works.

On literally everything else the inmates now "run" the asylum. I use quotation marks because there's no running being done, it is a state of pure anarchy.

It is really concerning, as the rumor appears to be that the Big Ten and SEC are going to split off for football AND men's basketball, which apparently for each would mean having their own championship separate from the rest of the NCAA. @Genetics56, who has been a fairly legit insider in all of this realignment stuff, suggested that it is possible that the breakaway could include the Big East for men's basketball, which would help. But clearly the magic of March Madness would be wiped away if it was just a Big Ten-SEC tournament. I can't imagine why they think this would be a feasible path forward. Yes, people want to see big name programs in the championship game. Yes, having multiple Cinderellas in the Final Four probably hurts ratings. But the first two rounds are unbelievably captivating because of the potential for major upsets by mid-majors and other auto-bid participants.

Additionally, not that this will be the deciding factor, but if you go this route, it kills the conference tournament. Who would want to watch a B1G tournament followed by a B1G-SEC only national tournament? It would just be silly. If the breakaway truly leads to a B1G-SEC only postseason, while it should work out for football, it would kill college basketball.

Finally, if Kansas, Duke, Gonzaga, Louisville, Arizona, Houston, West Virginia, Baylor, UConn, Villanova, Virginia, etc. are left behind and participate in their own March Madness with the rest of Division I, then they have a very strong argument that their championship would matter a whole lot more than the Power 2 championship who has teams that only make up 8 of the last 25 national champions (assuming UNC to SEC). Would anyone even tune into the first round of a Sweet Sixteen tournament that looked like this (see below) rather than a traditional March Madness game?

1. Purdue v. 16. Mississippi State
8. Oklahoma v. 9. Alabama
4. Wisconsin v. 13. Texas
5. Kentucky v. 12. Northwestern
6. Illinois v. 11. Mississippi
3. Tennessee v. 14. Michigan State
7. Auburn v. 10. South Carolina
2. UNC v. 15. Florida

Blech.

It will hurt your soul even more if you see it laid out, haha...

2007: 5-5. #12 seed, First Round loss.
2008: 2-8. No postseason.
2009: 6-4. Second in Big Ten, #5 seed, First Round loss.
2010: 7-3. NIT.
2011: 5-5. #9 seed, Second Round loss.
2012: 5-5. No postseason.
2013: 3-7. #7 seed, Second Round loss.
2014: 2-8. NIT.
2015: 5-5. NIT.
2016: 3-7. No postseason.
2017: 3-7. NIT.
2018: 2-8. No postseason.
2019: 2-8. No postseason.
2020: 8-2. Second in Big Ten, NCAAT cancelled (likely a #6 seed?). Truly the end of the storm.
