With it being announced that Zach Edey is leaving after this season, who are the top five Big Ten opponents that you happiest to never have to face again? This should only include people who we know have no eligibility left or have announced they won't use their Covid year like Edey.

My list is:
Boo Buie
Jahmir Young
Edey
Tyson Walker
Tominaga

I also really hope Tony Perkins doesn't feel like using his Covid season.
I'd add Mady "The Thug" Sissoko to that list.

Talor Battle. Adam Haluska. Jon Diebler. Jordan Taylor. Denzel Valentine.

(Oh I get it, guys who are gone after this year. I was like "why is that list so recency-biased" lol)

I’m pretty sure Tominaga has another year of eligibility. Did he announce he won’t be returning?

I'm all for being an optimist when it calls for it, but I would argue you are not looking closely enough. Three of those wins are vs. Quad 3 teams, so we are 7-3 in games where we score 80+ against Tournament-level competition that we would be facing in the Second Round (I think most of us agree a First Round loss would be a MASSIVE disappointment, and even a Second Round loss would really leave a negative air about the program, fair or unfair). And these are those games in chronological order:

W 98-89 vs. #37 FAU (New York, NY)
W 96-66 vs. #53 Northwestern
W 88-73 at #120 Michigan
L 96-91 in OT at #53 Northwestern
W 87-75 at #66 Ohio State
W 87-84 in OT vs. #41 Nebraska
L 88-80 at #24 Michigan State
W 85-80 at #67 Maryland
L 90-89 at #96 Penn State
W 95-85 vs. #60 Iowa

Two things concern me here:

1. Of all those wins, the only ones that were not absolute heart attacks were vs. Northwestern and at Michigan. The first one happened way back on January 2nd, and the second is against a last place team that won't sniff the NCAA. I'll give us credit for winning, but again ... we were playing with fire. A win is a win is a win, but luck evens out. I don't want to be praying for a last second win in the Second Round while playing a team that is just simply less talented than we are. People can say I am being too harsh on them, but this team is simply too talented to be in a down-to-the-wire battle with everyone! That's asking for a fluke loss and an early exit.

2. The trend since the start of the year is concerning. If you look at the Big Ten results since the start of the year in that list of 10 games up there, the points we gave up in regulation goes like this:

66 vs. Northwestern
73 at Michigan
76 at Northwestern
75 at Ohio State
73 vs. Nebraska
80 at Michigan State
89 at Penn State
85 vs. Iowa

The stats are skewed by the Northwestern and Nebraska games being OT, but we are giving up a lot more points lately than we were before.

Your posts are so informative FOTNM.

These posts have convinced me you are either the most productive employee at your company....or the least productive.

I don't see how there's a middle ground!

I’m still holding out hope that we win our next three games, get back within a game of Purdue. Purdue loses that Sunday morning to Wisconsin opening the door for us to play for a B1G title Sunday night.
That would be awesome if we pull off the victory in that fashion. I'll be there. I don't get to games often, and the last one was also there...the drubbing in 2019 where Iowa shot over 70% from 3. My biggest takeaway from that game (other than getting stomped) was that I realized right away during warmups how SMALL we looked. And sure enough, they just kept draining 3s over us. Looking forward to finally being able to see the length we have now in person.

A wealth of detailed and instructive posts.

Just another demonstration of the fact that Illini Nation has the smartest and most intelligent fan base of any sports-related organization on the Planet.

And that work production for anyone should always be secondary to anything Illini-related. Priorities.

When it's all said-and-done for each of us... we won't care about what kind of performance reviews we ever got. We'll be thinking about all the great roundball we got to watch. And the great times and memories.

Again... Priorities.

I have 2 of these guys far above the rest. Not Tominaga, Walker or Edey because they didnt actually beat us enough on my opinion. And without going to far down a rabbit hole for stats here, even when Purdue beat is, it wasnt because Edey dominated. And I know we beat Tomonaga far more than he beat us, if he even did. And we have had MSU’s number it feels like these last few seasons.

But it is very hard for me to pick Young or Buie over the other, but I will go with Buie. I hate Maryland since they joined the Big Yem because we cant seem to beat them and Young has played a big part in that recently. But Buie plays for Northwestern. 1.) F Northwestern, there is no reason we should ever lose to Northwestern in basketball. Period. And 2.) while we likely have more wins against them during his career (again, not gonna stat dive), when we do lose, its because he just goes OFF and we have no answer. Or at least it always seems that way.

IIRC Buie is something like 2-8 against us, so he hasn't really gone off to any real effect.

Didn't know where else to put this, but I am really bummed and surprised that our season-ending game at Iowa is a frickin' Sunday night game.
I am bummed because we are talking about the end of conference play which means we are getting to the end of college basketball season, especially the joy and pain of watching the Illini. Where'd it all go?

I'm in the camp that enjoys the ride more than the end. My enjoyment of sport comes from the season more than it does the post season. There is simply more time to enjoy it, and I appreciate quantity.

I'm also in this camp. I enjoy every single game (except if we lose horribly, then its less enjoyable, but that goes for postseason play too).

I really miss the 90s because I could tune into a Bulls game 3-4 times a week and it didn't matter if it was the playoffs or not- Michael would show me something new & different every time I tuned in. I have similar memories of many Illini teams.

Great concept article here, asking 44 basketball notables and Illini greats to sum up Coleman in one word. Kudos to Jeff D'Alessio from the N-G for pulling together this collection (including Bubba Chisholm! :D) and a big ole Brad Underwood fart noise to the guy who chose this moment to call Coleman a crybaby. One the whole, the comments are very positive and recognize that although he is a complicated human being with flaws like the rest of us, overall the good far outweighs the bad.

Tell us how you REALLY feel, TJ.

I just don't want to hear 'BooBooie' from any announcer anymore. It's like an earworm tunneling into my brain.

I think what I liked most was seeing what all these personalities/players are up to now. Had no idea Rice was still playing in Taiwan.

Agreed. I sometimes think about what happened to Rob Judson. I thought he was much older and probably retired. Although I guess he is no spring chicken but still active as a coach. One reason I sometimes wonder is that I think he was interested in the Illinois head coach position around the time of Groce's hire. Or maybe there were people, probably on Loyalty, who were putting his name out there as a possibility. Or both. I think a lot of people were willing to take a chance as he is a former Illini great (or near-great?) who would bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the program. Also, he was an assistant coach at Illinois from 1996-2001. I believe he was head coach at NIU at the time of Groce's hire. I seem to remember the people talking about him as a possible replacement for Weber admitted that he didn't have enough experience. But probably would've done better than Groce. Maybe. Maybe not.

I’m in the camp of most wins. Tournament or conference I enjoy the wins. Actually probably enjoyed tournament more last year as I just watched great basketball rather than living or dying with the team. Just haven’t learned to enjoy “good loss”.

For me it's over-performer. I think the criticisms he gets are overblown. When he came in as a freshman, I saw a skinny, plodding player with a ton of versatility and good all around skillset. Never thought he'd develop so well. He's on several mock drafts, and he's a swiss army knife of a player. Great character, very coachable, really blossomed, and stuck with the program throughout. If he does get drafted, IMO that's a huge win for everyone involved.
