What rim protector was available at that time or since that would have come to Illinois? You take a player of his quality any time you can get him.

I want to word this carefully because you're right, we should never, ever run away from a quality player. That's just irresponsible. However, OA was court side to see the chaos that occurred with his brother. He didn't get on the floor for almost two months. Was there a different set of circumstances here? Could be. If we did think that there was a legitimate chance that significant time would have gone by before clearance, I don't think that putting all of your eggs(with regards to rim protection) in a freshman's basket.
All that tells me is that the staff decided the upside was worth the headache. I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt in cases like this.

It only raises the question for people searching for a problem.
I don't have any reason to think there would even be any sort of process needed to make KJ, who has played about 6 minutes of professional basketball, eligible. But I would have said the same about Demin (they both play at the same youth level in the same league), so I was surprised to see that he needed some sort of formal clearance.

I don't understand what you wanted the staff to do. Not recruit him?
If they believe he won't be eligible, obviously yes the answer is to not recruit him.

They obviously felt differently, and have a LOT more knowledge of the situation than we do.

Which is not to say that choice is infallible and immune from question. Sadly at the moment all we can do is hope for the best.

I’m interested, was the team looking to pivot from Demin to KJ after they saw him and Demin just made that easier with his demands or was he indeed an extremely good plan B?

some will see this as sour grapes:
it definitely isn't
All you need to do is compare how he was officiated and how Kofi was officiated. Both in the fouls called or not called, and in the fouls given and not given. Kofi would have fouled out every game if he tried the stuff Edey got away with.

And I'm not one of those that thinks the refs have it in for the Illini.

The athletics admin building is named after his family, so...
Really, I never got the three dots after the word "so." It's not a conflict of interest. Is it somehow the appearance of impropriety? It's not like anyone demanded a starting point guard assignment. Fear of what the NCAA might say??? Really??? Why do we take more care of our pets than we do of college kids? (Oh, I forgot about NIL.) But, anyway. . . .

I don't know why you need to make a narrative where none exists. Families don't (usually) buy their kids' way onto teams.

He was a 3 star player and, if memory serves, we seemed to slow play him a bit. Might have been a token offer.

But my memory might be fuzzy.
