When we quote our "years of NFL experience" is that only coaching or a combination of coaching and playing? Donnie played 8 years in the league...with a pro bowl for good measure. Welcome to the staff!

I think Abraham and Thad Ward are only ones without NFL coaching experience. As you pointed out Abraham has a wealth of NFL playing experience.

This formula is pretty simple now. If you want your kid to receive the best NFL prep that he can in college, Illinois has to be a top 5 destination.

I like the sentiment, but think that's getting a little carried away. Recruist/parents/handlers likely won't share that perception or believe it in earnest until they see guys getting sent to the NFL (rounds 1-5), although I do believe the experience will be a big boost over similar-tier programs.

I should have said parents who do their homework. Sure the glitz and glam of Ohio St. and Alabama will carry the day, but does Howard Griffith want Donnie Abraham or Kerry Coombs teaching Houston to be an NFL D-Back?

Every major D-1 recruit and their parents likely dream of the NFL one day. AT least on paper we look really good

I cant hep but be amazed at the guys Lovie has brought in. Lovie always seemed to be a guy helping former players get a step up in the coaching game. I'm curious on what former bears decide to coach and if they show up in C-U for a few years. Fingers crossed for an Urlacher led LB and Tillmon led secondary. I'm only half way kidding.

Urlacher was on the Score last week stating he has no desire to be a coach.

Unfortunately, Peanut hasn't expressed any desire to coach either. Seems like a TV analyst role is what he wants to do. Even if guys like Peanut, Urlacher, and others can just come around the program once in a while, that would be huge

I don't care if they coach. I just want to make sure they are spending time in Champaign. I think that will pay dividends.

Great players do not necessarily make good coaches. Stop beating the drums for ex-NFL players with absolutely no experience carrying a whistle and a clipboard. An assistant college coach is a miserable job, long hours, on the road visiting high school athletic departments, changing gigs every 2-3 years, very low pay. And most of all you have to be a great teacher and have the ability to mold the transition to manhood of the youths in your charge. You have to be dedicated and want this to be your life.

Both Urlacher and Peanut, but especially Peanut, will find some other way to make a difference in the lives of young men should they want to. They are big enough names to be able to do that some other way than coaching.

It would just be cool, however unlikely, to have them around our program talking to recruits and telling them how great it is to play for Lovie

Urlacher just married a model and is living on the west coast. I don't see Urlacher coming to Champaign.

But there's also something about being involved in the sport. Some guys can't get away from it. Others just have to walk away.

No kidding. And I'm still wondering what got sternquist vaporized after being hired by Lovie and brought here a year ago. Anyway I bet the recruiting staff that was under sternquist and are still around have found some increased motivation.

Pat Embleton is the senior guy left standing...and a holdover from the Beckman Era (he was a GA then)
