A comment that caught my eye: Bielema said he hired Ben Miller because he worked under Troy Calhoun, whose "offense is very similar".

Calhoun is a *little* less doctrinaire about the triple option than Army or Navy are, but it's an option offense.

Tony Petersen at App State wasn't running much option, but it was a very run-heavy offense with a decent amount of QB run.

And yet we've moved Isaiah Williams and Coran Taylor to WR and brought in and recruited a bunch of statuesque pocket passers more akin to a Wisconsin-type offense.

And we are certainly not recruiting the kind of smaller linemen you associate with service academy football.

I'm perplexed!
I don't think it is a scheme fit move at all. Someone mentioned Bilichek taught him to have someone with a military background to instill toughness and discipline. Could have been that considering how much coach talks about the line being so tight knit.

This is part of the pre-season fun with a new coach, especially one like BB who had a hiatus from head coaching college. What will we look like on O, on D??? Tune in 8/28 to find out!
And we've been fortunate to enjoy these moments every 4 years or so. /s

If I had to guess, we'll be offering pretty varied looks on O and D with the O looking mostly pro style. I formation or 31 personnel with some RPO mixed in.

Would love for us to just come out rocking 3 back sets but I don't see it being our mainstay.
I've heard 12 personnel mentioned a couple of times, unless that is just to throw Nebraska off.
"This strength staff, I have no words for how good they are. This is the best staff I've been a part of, with respect to every past staff that I've been through," Epstein said. "They really do (place an) emphasis on taking career of your body and soft tissues. (I'm) super, super glad and happy with the staff that Coach B put together."

One constant I heard from the early interviews of the coaches was the high praise of Coach Tank and how much improvement the players made. Nice to hear the praise from a player as well. I know a lot of people were sad to hear that Lou wasn't going to be retained, but Tank appears to be a major upgrade.

I’m excited to see what Jafar Armstrong bring to the WR group. We ended up with surprising depth there. One of these guys is likely to have a big season.
Navarro, Williams, Washington and Hightower seem like the guys that have been getting the most mention.

It's probably the weakest position group on the team if we're being honest, especially if the Isaiah hype doesn't survive contact with reality. But having two excellent pass catching TE's helps in that regard.

You are correct that we have little proven talent at the position, but I do believe we have enough athletes that someone will step up. The have a top notch coach to get them there.

I always get a bit of irrational optimism about now so tifwiw. Lol

I could see Armstrong coming in on 12 personnel and running our plays off the jet sweep(think Roger’s brothers at oregon State). Based on previous comments that’s as close as we get to the triple option

I like the sound of this but I don't remember seeing a lot of that in the Spring(obv the spring game is pretty vanilla so I'm not reading a to into but still).

I mean, we can put 12 personnel on the field, but I am sure we are going to get called for too many men penalty.

Here's Coach Peterson discussing depth at tight end and that 12 personnel is one of their primary sets.

Training Camp Practice No. 2: Illini OC Tony Petersen

I'm pretty sure I heard 12 personnel in another video and it's the only personnel set I recall being discussed. Obviously, there will be others.

Coach Petersen out at practice just threatening people with a good time.

My uneducated football brain thinks the next wave of offensive strategy is to keep the other teams' explosive offense on the sideline as spectators.

So are you saying that a hurry up, fast tempo offense with a struggling Tampa 2 defense was not very strategic? Hmm...

The best defense is a ball control offense.
The best defense is a ball control offense paired with a #1 defense. I don't need to see #1 one this fall however. I'll be happy if your ratings in those lonely four categories go from worst in college football to something like 60th. That'd be massive improvement. So yeah, ball control offense.

Let's Loyola other teams. (Sorry for the flashbacks at 7am)
