Texas A&M showing that NIL can’t buy you wins. They’ve invested over $4 million into their current team in NIL alone, yet they’re 3-4 and their culture is falling apart:

That's because their "culture" is based on guys who went to the highest bidder. What works better is using NIL to win the type of guys that fit instead of just the best player available. Perfect examples being what Illinois is doing in both football and basketball.

Even our 6-0 start in 2011 carried WAY less hype than what we have gotten this year … this team is passing the eye test!
Huge difference between the two years. In 2011 we were coming off 3 years of massive underperformance - the 2008-2010 rosters were stacked with talent and competed in a weak big 10 - a good coach would have won 8-10 games each of those years. We went 6-0 by beating a bunch of weaklings in unimpressive fashion, nothing like the beat downs we put on Minnesota and Wisconsin this year.

On a related note, here is an article regarding NIL that has some positive things to say about the fit between Illinois and Coach Bielema. I have noticed that Dodd seems to be giving us some good press lately.

Ari Wasserman, a senior college football writer for The Athletic, appeared as a guest on the "AP Top 25 College Football Podcast" on Tuesday to discuss a variety of college football topics with podcast host Ralph Russo.
During the show, Wasserman and Russo talked about the college football games that they are each looking forward to the most during the upcoming weekend.
Wasserman said the the Illinois at Nebraska football game is the No. 2 game that he is most anticipating. The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.

At the end of the conversation about Illinois and Nebraska, Wasserman said, "I'm so fascinated by the idea of a team that probably has MAC-level talent — half their roster has only MAC (scholarship) offers — going out and putting screws to a bunch of BigTen West teams that are actually pretty well put together."

So, is it true that half our roster has only MAC-level scholarships? (They certainly aren't playing that way.) If true that they didn't get great offers, then the issue is, how much of it was Lovie finding underrecruited gems (as Robert posits) and how much of it is this coaching staff doing a whale of job in developing and scheming? Either way, with this season (and the end of last year, imo), we will be more attractive to higher-rated payers. Comments like Wasserman's probably help with recruiting even more than Robert's position does. And I expect that calling our current roster "untalented" probably puts a nice chip on their shoulders.

A "senior college football writer" on a podcast is no more credible to me than a poster on a fan forum. It's like asking a guy who reads Motor Trend and Car & Driver to weigh in on a new model. They only know how to regurgitate and paraphrase what they've heard from other sources. It's all an echo chamber, and Ari Wasserman is like the 4th or 5th echo. It's not like this guy visited Nebraska or Illinois practices. He just read something about recruiting stars and pretended to have an informed opinion about it. What a hack.

We are 58th in 247's talent composite. The highest ranked MAC team is Toledo at 88th. That said, we are about as close to Toledo as we are to the 20th ranked team.

I'm sure if you ran through our roster, there are a number of players with mostly MAC level offers but I wouldn't think it's half.

Hi Ari! j/k

Your post is exactly the sort of media regurgitation I was describing, and it makes you about as credible as the sports journalist in question. He made the claim that Illinois has MAC-level talent. Does this guy have a reputation for having an eye for talent? Any professional experience on the college recruiting trail? Does he document his own talent evaluations? Has he visited practices for either team? No, no he hasn't. He read the same 247 talent composite that you cited in your anonymous internet post. I can read all about the performance of the new Ferrari 812 GTS online and then give you my recommendation about it. That's what you're getting here.
