Illini Track & Field, Cross Country

That would be amazing, and I would make a special trip for that. My dad's family is from that area, so saw Prefontaine, Shorter and Wottle in a race there in the early 70's. I love watching the Olympic trials and US championships at Eugene - it's an atmosphere that doesn't seem to exist anywhere else in the US

This year we have the Olympic Trials and the NCAA outdoor championship at Hayward.

I'll share a Pre story for you, he was going to be running against Shorter. On Thursday before the meet he gave the Register Guard (local paper) his planned split times for the meet. So everyone in the stands had a copy in their hands during the meet. When it said he was going to do a particular split, he did it. Then with 3 laps to go (3 mile race) he turned a 63 breaking free of Shorter and the crowd erupted!!! It was absolutely electric!! His final lap was a 60.3. I still get goose bumps thinking about that race.

So what are the chances the expanded B1G will move it's outdoor track and field championships to Eugene?
I would expect the conference to hold that event there at some point. The conference doesn't use a permanent site - it rotates. Eugene is quite a slog for our east coast brethren.
What do you know of mia brahe-pedersen, sprinter extraordinaire out of Lake Oswego, OR? Has she made a college choice? She has a Nike sponsorship so I'd imagine that Oregon has the upper hand.

Pre was amazing...I think I was 12 when he died and he is a big reason why I got into running in HS. I remember the crowd chanting "Go Pre" as the race got close to the finish - it gives me chills to think about it. You have to wonder how great he could have been had he not died so young

I don't think Mia Brahe-Pedersen has made a decision about where she is going. She is amazing, I'd prefer that the rest of the world doesn't know about her just yet. I'd love to see her in the green and yellow.

Maybe things will change as to rotating the championship. They can possibly make money having it at the U of O if we draw 10,000 a day.

I ran cross country in high school, Dave Wilborn who was a year a head of me held the U of O mile record until Pre broke his record. Dave lost to Ryan in the high school national meet by 0.2 seconds. I think Ryan ran a 4:02 and Dave was in at 4.02.2 My memory might be wrong on the times, but hey I'm 76 years old and that was a long time ago.

What Pre did for athletes in general will probably be his long term legacy.

Update on Mia, she's committed to U$C.

Interesting that Petros has only had a handful of his athletes competing so far this indoor season. Very few runners competing, mostly field events. Let's see who shows up this weekend in Champaign. Maybe he doesn't want to show his hand until the Big Ten championship? Anyway, it's a very tight race between Petros, Underwood, and Mike Small for the Illini coach stacking the most talent on their respective teams.

Think you can count on it, they will have the best facilities in the conference from day 1. The have the hotel infrastructure to host the event as demonstrated by them hosting the IAAF World track n Field Championships for the 1st time in US history once the renovations to Hayward field were complete. it is virtual lock to happen IMHO.

My wife and I went for one day and it was just perfect! Transportation to Hayward was handled well, the multiple big screens made replays excellent. Only thing I'd say is that when it gets towards evening it's better to sit on the West side or the South end as the sun will be right in your eyes in the East and North areas.

I have a video from our seats saved somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

Wow. I knew Petros would turn us around, but didn't think it would happen THAT fast. When's the last time either of our teams were ranked #1? Ever?
Never for the women. Not sure about the men.....possibly before the war.
