If Whitman wants a top ten program, he's going to have to provide top ten facilities.
Perhaps a new 10,000 seat arena to house volleyball, hockey, and women's basketball.View attachment 36673
yep , comparing Huff Hall to that of wisky , psu or nebby shows how inadequate our place really really is.......
Hmmmm, give some examples of schools that have just such a facility....... I'm curious if that is wishful thinking, or within the realm of possibility.Perhaps a new 10,000 seat arena to house volleyball, hockey, and women's basketball.
Just wishful thinking. Kill 3 birds with one stone.Hmmmm, give some examples of schools that have just such a facility....... I'm curious if that is wishful thinking, or within the realm of possibility.

I just realized I want for this to be a reality...but we need resources for football and basketball...so why do I feel dirty...?Hmmmm, give some examples of schools that have just such a facility....... I'm curious if that is wishful thinking, or within the realm of possibility.
To be fair, I'm not sure you even need 10,000 for an arena like this. My initial vision of what this facility could look like would be a 7,000 seat arena like Northern Iowa's MacLeod Center or Drake's Knapp Center. I know both of those are the primary arenas for Missouri Valley programs, but I think 7,000 is a sweet spot in terms of capacity for an arena housing these types of teams in a Power 4 conference.Perhaps a new 10,000 seat arena to house volleyball, hockey, and women's basketball.
Average attendance and capacity for each team last season (source)Anyone know what kind of crowds Big Ten hockey games attract?
| Team | Average | Capacity |
| Wisconsin | 10059 | 15359 |
| Minnesota | 9225 | 10257 |
| Mich State | 6482 | 6114 |
| Penn State | 6314 | 5782 |
| Michigan | 5775 | 5800 |
| Ohio State | 5321 | 7700 |
| Notre Dame | 4921 | 4850 |
So, a 7,000 seat arena would be just about right. Also a good size as a concert venue. Is hockey a revenue sport at these schools?Average attendance and capacity for each team last season (source)

Women's basketball shares Ubben and State Farm with the men. No need for a change. Volleyball needs those kinds of facilities for training and games. Sharing with hockey in a similar way. Probably going to have to wait until revenue sharing shakes out unless a big-time donor steps up. Until that is completed volleyball recruiting is going to suffer.Perhaps a new 10,000 seat arena to house volleyball, hockey, and women's basketball.
Yeah. I see lots of parallels to when the men's tennis team lost Craig Tiley. Dancer is a decent coach and we're still in the upper level of the B1G, but we're not the nationally relevant elite level team we were.Illinois Volleyball was recruiting well nationally with the present facilities as they are. Not saying facilities don't matter but Illinois' bigger problem is in poor recruiting and losing their former national prominence which has eroded greatly since the Poulter/Bastianelli/Quade/Cooney teams and since Hambly left. Improving facilities alone wouldn't have brought Illini back to national prominence and contention. A change in better coaching, way better recruiters and corresponding results is also needed.
