The Galloping Ghost

Washington, DC
Brutal game. It was great seeing us live and I yelled the entire time, but we played about as bad as we ever have under SG. Credit to Notre Dame. It was immediately obvious in person just how much bigger and faster they were than us and they used it to disrupt everything we were trying to do. We couldn't get into any of our sets offensively, let alone find a rhythm. Other than Gen playing hero ball, they were in our pockets and had us completely stagnant. Defensively, we just couldn't stop them 3 out of the 4 quarters. Credit to Ndour, though, she put in some really solid minutes, especially in that second quarter. Where others were getting absolutely smoked, she was able to stand her ground and cause some disruption inside.

Despite this, I'm still excited about the season. We now know how much farther we need to go to become one of the elite teams. I believe SG and the women will learn from this and be ready once we hit the conference schedule.

Rather amazing to me that just into year two of the Green program we found ourselves playing in a nationally televised game against a Top 20 opponent. Coach likes to talk to her team about what it will take to get to the next level in competition. Having the chance to play in a game like this one today lets us see where we need to improve and boy it all hinged around points off TO's and second chances. I thought we started to get our feet under us a bit into the second half and began showing some grit. Adalia was a warrior start to finish. Gen had another amazing offensive game. I thought Mikira shook off the rust and over all played pretty well considering it was her first game and a rather big one at that. Aside from Aicha grabbing some rebounds and looming in the paint our bigs were noticeably outplayed.
But as the season goes along I feel having a game like this will help the team improve. They are competitors and while today was not much fun, it will spur them on to get better. Let's Go Illini!!

Our starting frontcourt had 2 points while our starting backcourt had 62. That frontcourt only took two shots and no FTs. Consequently, we had only 5 assists.

To many turnovers, to many second chance points for ND. Girls never quit though. Got tired of the announcers fawning all over ND though.
Way too many turnovers and many unforced. We were a step slower and rebounding was an issue. Hopefully it was a teaching moment and we improve from it. Love the girls.

Thank you for the excellent report.

All and all I was pleased with the fight of the ladies. Notre Dame was missing a key player and they look like a legit Top 10 team. Illinois has plenty of room to gel and grow together. I am not expecting miracles this season but at least a trip back to the Big Dance.

Ladies gave up a ton of offensive boards and all positions looked slow at times. Notre Dame guards drove past our guards and line of D multiple times for easy layups. Ton of things we can work on but a good learning lesson playing against one of the better teams in the nation. I am excited to see this team work out the kinks as I see the effort level and intensity not wavering.

I am ready for the game - streaming on B1G+ at 1pm - in fact I need it after yesterday. I enjoy seeing them play as a Team and following the Coaching Staff's instructions. The players are smiling and having fun. The games are slowed down enough that even I can follow the strategies. I must be getting old as I don't miss the dunkin' and struttin'. Head Coach Green's charisma shines brightly - she is just a flat-out leader. It is easy to see that this program is rising from the ashes. Thank you AD Josh Whitman!

Impressive. I thought Canisius looked like a solid team. Shot well, hit threes, rebounded well, moved the ball well, defended well and were aggressive on defense
It's just that the Illini were even better at all those things and steadily pulled away after the first 8 minutes or so. Illini shot 85% from free throw line. Wish the guys could do that.

Just watched replay of ND game (I was out of country last week).

-- Their PG was ridiculous - stole the ball from our guards off the dribble in open court multiple times
-- Our bigs are still undersized against top 10 teams. They completely neutralized our inside game and dominated the boards 36-25 . Kendall had 2 pts and
Camille did not score
-- I was hoping to see some of newcomers step up in 2H but Cori Allen only played 2 minutes and Shay Bollin only played 12 minutes. Neither scored.
-- Hard to believe Notre Dames best player was out.
-- Had to hurt that our best player Makira had missed 3 games due to injury.

Love the fact we can go against top 10 team and be competitive but like football we have a ways to go!

Still getting no respect from ESPN - we are first team out

B10 has 7 out of 18 teams in. MD has really fallen from number 7 ranked nationally last year

1 Iowa
2 Indiana
3 Ohio State
9 Michigan
9 Penn State
9 Maryland
11 Michigan State

Maryland has lost to three ranked teams: S. Carolina, UConn and Washington State. Granted, they were throttled in each of those games, but few teams would have run that gauntlet unscathed. The B10 is tough. We'll need our 'A' game to finish in front of the teams that you have listed.

We lost to two tourney teams that we played and won the 3 cupcake games. Small sample size so far but win the next two against lower competition and time to show up against better competition. The ladies are a competitive team with fight but they will have to earn it. I don't see any disrespect 5 games into the season. Long season ahead.......
