Illini Women's Basketball Allegations

This can only get uglier. Wonder how long Bollant can remain HC here.

I'm surprised he has remained up to this point. Allegations against Beckman were one thing for Cvijanovic's claims are obviously very questionable. This on the other hand seems to be a consensus among the team. There's no way as a parent or player I would want to head into this program with this surrounding t head coach. We do not have a good women's bball program at the moment and a controversial head coach. It just makes more sense in my opinion to go a different direction. You're not exactly giving up someone like Kryzewski, Izzo, or Summitt here.

From the suit:

Also, the Plaintiffs believe that, after a reasonable opportunity for further investigation or discovery, they will likely have evidentiary support that the Defendant, Thomas, during the time period set forth in ¶25, above, was actually aware of the racially hostile environment, was in a position to address the racially hostile environment, was in a position to take measures to end it and was deliberately indifferent to the racially hostile environment and its consequences on the Plaintiffs

I'm sure "they" are looking at what the options are. Since the university has cleared Bollant already, they have to be careful to avoid a lawsuit by Bollant if they dismiss him. Easy to say he won't be the coach at this time next year, but the details and timing will be painful to follow.

Agree. Additionally if they prove Thomas had knowledge of the the actions the coaches are alleged to have taken then he will be gone also.

So, who will the current UI administration hire to replace Thomas?

Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum?

With regards to Thomas, this would be the classic "what did he know and when did he know it?" If it is proved the allegations are true and Thomas knew and did nothing, he is gone. If it isn't that clear, then things get a lot murkier. If UIUC pays off Thomas or Bollant as part of an exit package, the bad PR will just escalate if that's even possible at this point.

8th former UI women's player claims mistreatment

Kierra Morris told The News-Gazette she felt ostracized from the team after chronic knee pain led her to be medically disqualified to play during the 2012-13 season, Matt Bollant’s first at Illinois after being hired away from Wisconsin-Green Bay by new athletic director Mike Thomas.

For that, she blames UI coaches, who she said reneged on a promise to make her a student manager and took measures to alienate her from her teammates.

Where there's smoke, flames, intense heat and burning embers, seems likely there's a fire. :(

Or disgruntled former players. Maybe we should let it play out before calling in a multi-alarm fire :D

This short term problem is that it looks bad for our school to be named in a lawsuit.

It might very well just be disgruntled players playing the race card like Jim kind of said, It might very well be racism for real, or maybe it's a combination of the two.

I for one don't know what to believe...I've heard disturbing accusations about the coaching staff like pressuring kids to play while hurt, and I've heard stupid stuff like complaining coaches were pushing to change a kids shot (which is complete and utter bs to be complaining about).

What we read on deadspin is their side of the story. I don't know what Bollant's response is so hard to draw a conclusion. One conclusion we can draw is that Bollant is a horrible coach if he pissed off this many of his players. Have any come out in his defense?

Would love to be able to solve problems like this with polygraph tests. ;)

While both of these articles are positive, they don't mean much in reality. The outcome of the lawsuit far outweigh the options of people that don't matter. A recruit hasn't loved it and boosters are even further removed. They may be right be coincidence, cut I'm not sure they can address the allegations substantively. If the lawsuit is settled, as many are, it likely won't answer any of the questions people have.

Tribune column on the Illini issues (subscribers only?): David Haugh on Illini mess

Yet at this point, university President Timothy Killeen would be wise to resist firing any Illinois coach or administrator — as badly as they might deserve swift action — until both investigations close in the coming weeks or months. The last thing the university wants is another lawsuit for wrongful termination.

I was listening to the WDWS’ Saturday Sports Talk show. Steve Beckett, U of I law professor, talked about the woman’s basketball players lawsuit. He had some interesting comments and perspective. The WDWS' Saturday Sports talk show podcast should be available about 2:00PM Saturday and the Beckett interview started about 10:00AM.

Everyone can listen for themselves, but I would summarize as follows: from a legal perspective it was not well written and lacks some facts. Beckett falls victim to some of the same things however, when he says "I can't believe they would segregate players on the road.", he is just guessing as well. For me the takeaway was the suit wasn't well written (I'm not an attorney), but from a PR perspective, it is still devastating and some level of damage is done and cannot be undone and this suit could go on for years.
