Plain and simple this team needs front court depth and heightI'm curious what should give us confidence that Camille Hobby would have such a positive impact on our performance next year.
I believe our goal is to improve our front-court depth from what we had this year. Based on what I saw of her in extended highlights from NC State's 2023 tournament loss to Princeton (she played 18 minutes), I'm not convinced that Hobby is a meaningful improvement over our most used bench big, the graduating Geovana Lopes.
In those extended highlights, I see a slow-footed player who didn't move her feet well and was badly limited and exploited in key areas--rebounding, help defense in the paint, defending screens, and shot blocking. Perhaps Princeton's small ball lineup that was a horrible match-up for her. In Hobby's favor, she made a couple nice baskets and averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds in 21 minutes per game across the season to Lopes' 1/2/8. Hobby probably has more offensive game, and you may give value to her starting every 2022-23 game for NC State, a tournament team; yet watching Hobby in the tournament game, I don't see Hobby moving the needle over Lopes in what they give you on the floor.
Again, I'm curious what others think or see. I think I hope for better from the portal.
Camille Hobby, NC State #41
Until late in the year we lucked out on Bostic/Shoup-Hill getting hurt. Between injuries let alone fatigue we need bodies that can contribute minutes. Otherwise we are having another season where McKenzie 5'10" and random under 6 footers will be playing the 4 spot at times again when foul trouble/injuries/off game, etc.
Camille Hobby was thrown up from another user on here. There are definitely better options than Hobby but no clue who will land at this point. Few things I like about Hobby though....
Played at NC State for 4 years. One start first 3 seasons and started all 32 games this season on a tourney team. She is use to winning environment and has one season left of eligibility. Quick plug in play.
Stats for Shoup-Hill and Hobby this season with both playing decent minutes for first time
Shoup-Hill
MPG 25.3 PTS 6.1 REB 5.6 FG% 47.5 FT% 80 plus 40% from 3PT
Camille Hobby
MPG 21.3 PTS 8.8 REB 4.2 FG% 51.8 FT% 84
Hobby started 32 games and only had 4 fouls one time the whole season. Shoup-Hill started 28 games and had 4+ fouls in probably around 40-45% of the Big Ten games.
Ton of experience on the Illinois squad coming back with some nice recruits. Think we could be a top 25 team majority of next year if we can land some quality front court players.
