I meant using the same metric. What’s the combined record of the teams we beat?
Of course - it should be worse, no major ranked wins like some of the others have. It’s just overall metric wise one more win would have likely put them very very close to being in.

While teams are going to complain about who the rightful 12th and possibly 11th teams are and which 2 loss teams get left out in favor of 3 loss SEC teams (I've got Miami, BYU, and SMU if they lose to Clemson out with Georgia and South Carolina in. I also see Bama and Ole Miss crying up a storm as left out 3 loss teams.), in my opinion the NCAA is so lucky they expanded the playoffs this year because picking a Top 4 this year would be diabolically tough.

I mean who do you all have right now?

For sure:
Oregon

For sure in with win:
Texas
Penn State

But then who?
1 loss SMU?
1 loss Indiana?
1 loss Notre Dame?
1 loss Boise State?
2 loss Ohio State
2 loss Georgia if they win?
2 loss Penn State if they lose?
2 loss Texas if they lose?
2 loss Tennessee?
2 loss Miami?
2 loss ASU?
2 loss ISU?
2 loss BYU?

The Top 4 would be an absolute mess this year. As of this exact moment I'd have:

1. Oregon
2. Texas
3. Penn State
4. Boise State

And yes, people would lose their minds.

Think Miami forced us to play SC instead of Bama, way worse match up for us. SC is looking like a top ten team rn, they'll put Bama in the playoff despite their two bad losses.
I've got South Carolina above Bama and Ole Miss. I would not be surprised to see the committee choose Alabama as the final team in the field over South Carolina, but I will stand by saying that South Carolina has the better resume despite the head to head loss. As it stands, I've got South Carolina as the final team in the field and us facing Alabama in the Citrus.

Facing a pissed of SC with Sellers rolling wouldn't be fun, Bama could be more apathetic with more opt outs.

No surprise Lane is first in line trying to weasel his way into the playoff.

I would love for us to make the playoff but it's really kind of a farce if we need a 3 loss team in the playoff. If we do, it should be based on strength of wins, not losses. I think both Bret and Lane have it wrong, though I couldn't fault either for pushing for the teams getting in obviously.

Its just not clean, and I don't think this is a viable situation going forward. I think we inevitably end up at 2 of each of the p4 conferences banding together and forming their own leage with playoffs like the NFL. 4 automatic qualifiers and 8 eye test qualifiers is barely an upgrade to the 4 team playoff.

Marquee wins seem to be valued more than Quality losses.

We simply did not have one.

A 9-3 record that includes a win over Penn State or Oregon is a different conversation, as it shows, “hey, we could defeat a team of this calibur if you include us in the Playoff.”

Really disagree with this. I don't understand the problem with 3 loss teams. Heck, we've had NFL playoffs with 9 win 7 loss teams. (I do agree strength of wins is important).

So you're P4 conferences banding together basically ensures some 3 loss teams so it fixes nothing.

And as to being "barely an upgrade" I think that is ridiculous. Any team with a legitimate claim to being the best in the country will make the playoff. That wasn't the case with just four teams because 5 was often a really good team with a shot at the title.

My only problem with the playoff is they waited until 2024-5 to have a 12 team playoff. They should have had it decades ago before ESPN execs could meddle in it. Hot take: having a playoff decades ago might have saved the Pac-12, Big East, and maybe even the Southwest Conference if it was created in the 80s.

I’d argue it does compare. Most power 4 wins.
We have 2 wins in OT (one against a 1-11 team at home who got destroyed all season) and another win on a miracle last play of the game.

We looked non competitive against Oregon.

We have zero wins against the current top 25. Our best quality win is against a 7-5 team at home.

It’s been a great year but we were not a top 12 team. I’m ecstatic we went 9-3, it was a great year. It could have also been a 6-6 year too…

Agree. Ole Miss beat South Carolina and UGA. Those carry a lot of weight

They also beat a Miss St Wake Forest who
have a combined 6-18

But don’t bring up UK 4-8 loss

I don’t think we’re one of the 12 best teams (frankly neither is Indiana- they got blown out by the only good team they played) but I love Bret going on the Crusade to get Illinois in the conversation- that’s all he really trying to do and you can’t blame him
I think he is hoping recruits take notice of what he's saying as well. Bret has been amazing so far.
