It's disturbing that we're playing less clean football than we were in year 1 and will be going absolutely nowhere so long as that's the case.

I suspect that's a 1-11 type Virginia team, Tony Elliott spent most of the game yelling at his own guys. Not a situation that seems to be meshing well, and they are young and thin on the lines. That's an even worse team than Wyoming and might be worse than a Chattanooga team ranked in the top 10 in the FCS.

All of that said, just a totally dominant performance defensively. Armstrong looked like he just wanted to go home by about the middle of the third quarter, we made it absolutely miserable for them. Looking at some of the offenses in the B1G West, one can't help but be hopeful that once again Walters' bunch will keep us in games.

Congratulations to the team for a convincing win despite trying to give it away. This DL is going to be fun to watch!

I'm now expecting a win against Iowa based on how pathetic their offense is, and how good our defense is.

Iowa lives off blocked punts. They'll block at least one of ours, I'm afraid. But I do want to see our D against their impotent O.

Just finished watching delayed broadcast on Tivo. At the risk of being redundant, these three things stood out:

1. Attendance was embarrassing. Unlike Fox and BTN, ESPN had no problem showing how sparse the crowd was, with multiple long distance panoramic shots. Pitiful! Absolutely awful!

2. Defense was outstanding. It may keep us in 8 of the 9 remaining games this season. Walters is a genius. I really think he's a student of the game.

3. After last year, I thought "disciplined play" was going to be our trademark under BB. Always win the turnover battle. Minimize penalties, and never have any stupid ones. During the broadcast, they said we were tied for 13th best in the nation last year in terms of turnovers. QUESTION: Can we get this get corrected immediately? If not, it will cost us a Bowl opportunity.

They announced at the game that student tickets are free for Chattanooga at least. It's a start and it's nice to see they've been doing it on occasions when they really want to draw people out. I agree that it needs to happen more often though.
I think they are making an effort. Today was high school band day and there were hundreds and hundreds of free tickets handed out to the high school musicians. Educators were admitted free to the Wyoming game.

Today was Ag Day too wasn't it? I thought I heard Barnhart mention something about that on the radio.

What a strange game. Illini again have 4 TOs and have more penalties than they did against Indiana (though for a few less yards), and they win pretty handily. D was just tremendous.

I’m getting the feeling what we’ve seen from DeVito these last two games is what we’ll see all season — I.e. the turnovers. Just a matter of whether or not the good things he does out weigh the TOs, I will say I have more confidence that he’ll more and better good plays than we saw from the QBs last year. So we’re seeing progress.

Just the things like celebrating TDs, the pregame entrance, videos and music during the game (although that’s still a major work in progress). Even something as simple as fireworks. I mean, the 3rd down defense needs more hype. That’s for sure. I was never a fan of the war chant for that reason too.

I don’t know it just felt better today.

Less inconveniences, maybe.
For the life of me I'll never ever understand how someone wouldn't be a fan of the "war chant". That always got the crowd hyped as hell, was catchy as hell and I've lost count of how many fans / alums of other Big Ten teams admired the hell out of it.

If loving watching our players' pregame entrances, TD celebrations, music being played loud as hell, our awesome band performing the "war chant" in beautiful hyped up harmony is considered an "inconvenience" then I suppose Illinois should just stick to tennis & golf. (FTR, I respect the heck out of both tennis and golf but come on man, lets embrace making Illinois football fun & entertaining again!

I was at Kam’s for the beginning of the game before heading to the stadium. They didn’t have the Illinois game on, so we asked them to put it on. They said they “don’t get that channel,” so the Iowa game was on instead. WTF?

The inconveniences weren’t related to anything I specifically mentioned. The lack of inconveniences were their own positive from today’s gameday experience.

And I’m sorry… you may have liked the war chant, but if you think that’s hype… then you’ve been attending a different set of games than I have been for 18 years and have met with a whole different subset of fans/alumni than I did. What team is terrified by a slow monotonous clap on third down? It’s not loud… it’s not annoying… it just… was. Then again, maybe it was more exciting pre-2005 before I started attending games. Boooooring. I want the crowd to be cheering, not slow-clapping.

But, to each their own I suppose.

It's a strange feeling beating a Power 5 opponent by 3 TD's and still being somewhat disappointed.
Also Witherspoon gives 110% every snap but needs to tone his talking down a bit. Every time he makes a play, I am keeping one eye on the ref seeing if he is going to get flagged. It's the same feeling I always had with Daniel Barker.
The other issue that needs fixing is the attendance. It's embarrassing when the game intro shows the crowd and it is 2/3 empty. Other than continued winning, does anyone have any good ideas? Maybe go to every grade school and high school in a 1 hour radius of Champaign and offer free or heavily reduced tickets? Maybe charter busses from Chicago for fans? I'm no marketing expert but I know some major changes need to happen.
They used to charter buses from Chicago
And high school kids got In really cheap
Maybe you could fill an empty seat too
