The problem for one of our freshman heroes/epps is: his.man has been going off literally every game for 4 out 6 games. He takes it personally and off the chin. It's all five on the court. We literally have had 1 player have their career night on our Illini 8x this year. Hard to figure this out? Epps is fine!

I wonder what goes through peoples minds when they post such garbage in the game thread.....Is the game thread a license for anything goes as far as ripping the Illini ???????

Seems senseless to me to have a game thread and then view the rash of insults about the Illini.......JMHO
I’ve come to the conclusion that the GTs are a waypoint for many to come on and work out their own personal insecurities and psychoses.

Plus they are a great place to differentiate between those who have a bit of basketball knowledge and those who don’t understand what they are seeing right before their eyes.

Lastly, GTs are an entertaining platform to see how drunk people navigate keyboards & grammar!

I am so damn happy for this team!! Good for them!

Well…..while I was one who checked out early, woke up to a text from the daughter……a simpleYESSSS!
Wow….just Wow…what a way to start the day🍻
And she is the one who works early and is bed by 8:30……and I, am embarrassingly retired while she stayed up for the whole thing never doubting a comeback.

This game showed me that train wrecks can have happy endings.

I have a theory why we’ve had so many guys have had career nights against us this year. The past 3 years we’ve been the best team in the big ten, and so there are a lot of upperclassmen who have spent most of their college careers losing to Illinois. Which means we have a disproportionate share of guys who are “up” for us for no other reason than they are sick of losing to us.

You are on to something here.

The Illini have restored their National ‘Rep’ as a top program to be reckoned with. Big Ten titles have a way of doing that. And snagging top recruits every year.
And so a victory over the Illini is a ‘big deal’. It can make a season for a program. So this does in fact bring out the best in the opposition players (and coafhes).

That’s why the Illini cannot afford to come out flat or uninspired in any games. They have to meet and beat the intensity and desire brought to the court by the guys who want to beat you.

And we’ll all seen what happens when the Illini DON’T come out ready to play. Someone on the Illini (a player on the floor) has to be the ‘bad cop’ and get these guys quickly in line when they are flat aka Michael kicking tail on the Bulls when they needed it. (Does anyone currently on the Illini have that in their personality?).

Bottom Line: These games where some guy just goes off on the Illini is a show of respect FOR the Illini.

And Buie shot the free throws.
I missed that. Was there no protest from our bench?
A question - it was clearly a foul on Epps for using their center to pivot off of. Buie also pivoted off of his own player many times, is that legal? Looked like roller derby out there at times.

The only call they missed on that last drive was Buie traveling. When he tried to stop he slid falling backwards before throwing up the ball for Hawkins to swat.
I know it wasn’t a foul, but there was some body contact and Buie fell on the drive, plus it was the end of the game. I was shocked it wasn’t called a foul.

It's just the catharsis of saying something "out loud" to listening ears. I know people who literally have our logo tattooed on their skin who, if things aren't going our way during a game, will say things about our team that could make Clint Eastwood cry. I'm not sure how much can be read into it besides one's ability or inability to internalize their emotions.

I, for one, am a totally different person when I watch Illinois basketball games. My wife likes to tell people the only time she ever hears me raise my voice is when Illinois is on TV.

Sport is unique in the way that people are so passionate about them yet have little to no control over the outcome. Only way I can really explain it for myself.

But if you ever find me in the GT asking why BU doesn't try a zone, please just permanently ban me from the board and from breathing.

My coworker who has some ears in the program said that no player in the BU-era has been more "MF-ed" than Ayo. Ayo knew the assignment and was able to be a great example to his teammates by showing how to turn the tough love into progress. Not really sure we have a guy on this team that can be that example. I'm sure that leads to freshmen of all people not fully grasping the BU-method. I really hope things get better with Jayden, because he really has a chance to be something special for us over the next few years.

People need to stop blaming the refs so much in games like this. Were they perfect? No, far from it. But they were consistent. Yes NU set illegal screens, the same screens Coleman does almost every possession. Epps clearly grabbed the other players waste before he was tripped. Someone said something about Matt’s charge??? That was a textbook charge, not sure how anyone can say that was a bad call. They made the same calls for us as they did for them. In games where it isn’t called the same both ways I can agree on bashing the refs, but this game, just no.

Epps wasn't called for a foul on the guy he grabbed. Boo Bouie shot the free throws.

This wasn't a foul:

Neither was this:

We like to complain about the refs, myself included, but i thought they did a good job last night:

The review where the ball went through Harris’s legs they reversed the call and gave it to us. The views we saw on tv didn’t give a conclusive shot to overturn, so i was expecting the call to stand, even though let’s face it, if had touched Harris the ball probably would have slowed down enoigh for us to recover it, so it was likely the right call (just not one we would have gotten on the road).

The review where the ball was off a NW player wasn’t overturned and we got possession. That one was more obvious but still, at least they got it right.

After a foul on Harris, Sencire showed frustration because he’s an emotional player, and the ref didn’t T him up. It would have been a terrible call, but we’ve seen worse T’s.

Mayer continues to get the benefit of 3 point fouls, when he is clearly helping initiate the contact. But I’ll take it.

So all in all, the refs didn’t really hurt us this game. That’s the way i saw it.

About the game thread, many of our fans are like addicts. They sit around waiting for three days for the next fix/win which they expect to again bring them that euphoria of winning. Losing is especially bad for them because of the expectations. When they see the game slipping away, they get irritated because they were so looking forward to that feeling of euphoria again, and they lash out at everything - the players, the coaches, the refs, other posters. It is not pretty. Not sure if there is a 12 step program for it, but there should be.

No, speaking for myself. I will do no such thing. Your body of posts speaks for itself.
You are as positive and level-headed as anybody here. You know your place as a fan and you stay in your lane. You generally back up your point of view.

Sometimes you’re right. Sometimes you’re wrong…just like everybody else. But you have a right to express your opinion as long as you’re not being a jerk about it. This board needs more people like you IMO.
(Obviously, there’s a whole lot of oversimplification and needlessly going to one corner or the other.)

If you’d like to see a zone…go ahead and say it. Many/most coaches have it in their toolbox. It’s a fair point. There’s nothing wrong with that suggestion. (But obviously what Brad does works too…more often than not.) But you know you’re not the coach, after all. You have a right to have opinion without being pidgeon-holed. This is not a cult and it’s a free country…hopefully for little a while longer at least.

Ayo parents were all love, but No Non Sense parents! Most of his coaches were hard nose, the Irvins are not sweethearts, they will get in your grill real quick. It all depends on up bringing, coaches, and the Circle of leaches in your sphere!' Ayo will be making a minimum of 5+ million next year. Have him come talk to these players who are as soft as a pillow, 😆

Sencire, from the time he tied the game at 59, to the next time down the court when they tied Buie up when he took on Sencire, Hawkins AND Meyer (bad idea), he was absolutely lit.

He has such a unique look when he is amped. The best thing I can think to call it is:

Berserker Mode

If you arent familiar with Viking lore and what berserker mode is, you should look it up. It's fascinating. It's thought to have been a bit of a mind/body hack to access the "adrenaline rush" when desired.

It's said that the vikings would take on an animal version of themselves when in this state. I submit that Sencire looks like a King Cobra snake when he goes into this fury state. The way he holds his shoulders, the way he moves so fluidly, and his long arms even remind me of snake like features.

King Sencire, the Snake.
This is the sequence. I watched on loop like 20 times in a row.

Neither was this:

Question for those in the know? Is there actually a board / committee that supervises refs? Do they see these blatant bad calls? The ref in the background doesn't even look at the screen. Seems only interested in watching Boo's feet being behind the line.

You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! That was a football block. Pushed him out of the way. Not even considering that he was still in the act of setting his feet when he made contact initially. RJ was man handled. And coaches teach that because the refs are not calling it. It's frickin' Pro Wrestling. AND Collins loses his "Classy" label because he willfully teaches that crap. We've been right all along. He is an !!!. Good Ol' Al Capone was a smooth talker too. "Classy????"

When we lose: The refs suck. We were playing 8 on 5!

When we win: The officiating was fair and I graciously accept any and all bad calls made against us and recognize that some or all were offset by bad calls that worked in our favor.
Sorry, but it ain't paranoia if they really are out to get you.
