I missed that. Was there no protest from our bench?
A question - it was clearly a foul on Epps for using their center to pivot off of. Buie also pivoted off of his own player many times, is that legal? Looked like roller derby out there at times.
no free throws shot...it was before the bonus.

A little of track, but during one segment of BIG10 wrap-up with Katz and Meacham there was a comment to the effect of, "Skyy Clark is not with the team, but still part of the organization". What does that mean?
From what I read, he is on some sort of personal leave from basketball. There hasn't been any other public disclosures.

It's just the catharsis of saying something "out loud" to listening ears. I know people who literally have our logo tattooed on their skin who, if things aren't going our way during a game, will say things about our team that could make Clint Eastwood cry. I'm not sure how much can be read into it besides one's ability or inability to internalize their emotions.

I, for one, am a totally different person when I watch Illinois basketball games. My wife likes to tell people the only time she ever hears me raise my voice is when Illinois is on TV.

Sport is unique in the way that people are so passionate about them yet have little to no control over the outcome. Only way I can really explain it for myself.

But if you ever find me in the GT asking why BU doesn't try a zone, please just permanently ban me from the board and from breathing.

Self-admittedly, I’m one of those fans that can get a bit too *passionate* about the Illini during the course of a game. Every game I tell myself “It’s not a big deal, it’s just one game”. And then in the heat of the moment my emotions take over.

I moved to the South after living in Champaign and Chicago my whole life and I miss just being at the game or in a bar with other Illini fans where we can all vent together. My apologies - I think I tend to use the game thread sometimes as a way to vent to other Illini fans who will understand my pain more than my poor wife (who’s usually appalled at what I yell at the TV).

It was fantastic to see the "Illinois" rule actually work in our favor tonight. Thank God that basketball went between Sencire's legs. That was the start of the whole endgame.

What a great atmosphere! Announcers couldn't even hear whistles at the end. Way to not give up, those of you that stayed after the first half!

I said at the beginning of the year that our success this year was going to depend on how well Brad used his versatile roster. There will be other games where we will need our length and size to get it done, but going small and quick with our lineup completely changed the game.

Best comeback win since beating #1 IU during Groce Era, but ultimately may prove to be the blueprint for our success moving forward. Our key in the 1st half of any NCAA tourney game will be to stay close first half, then let our natural 2nd half dominance take us to where we want to be.

This team has played in so many different types of games, and I couldn't be more thrilled about our versatility right now, especially with Rodgers and Melendez emerging and what I think Goode will be able to do by that time.

I am hopeful this is the year we make it to the 2nd weekend. More hopeful than I have been since after the Texas game, because I think the switch is flipped on the defensive end and the offense is looking so much better conceptually.
Personally I think the refs should be able to go to the replay monitor for ANY questionable out of bounds play. An out of bounds call earlier in the game can affect the outcome of a game just as much as an out of bounds call in the last 2 minutes in a close game

No, speaking for myself. I will do no such thing. Your body of posts speaks for itself.
You are as positive and level-headed as anybody here. You know your place as a fan and you stay in your lane. You generally back up your point of view.

Sometimes you’re right. Sometimes you’re wrong…just like everybody else. But you have a right to express your opinion as long as you’re not being a jerk about it. This board needs more people like you IMO.
(Obviously, there’s a whole lot of oversimplification and needlessly going to one corner or the other.)

If you’d like to see a zone…go ahead and say it. Many/most coaches have it in their toolbox. It’s a fair point. There’s nothing wrong with that suggestion. (But obviously what Brad does works too…more often than not.) But you know you’re not the coach, after all. You have a right to have opinion without being pidgeon-holed. This is not a cult and it’s a free country…hopefully for little a while longer at least.
Thank you for those kind words, Earp!

I get my even-keel attitude honestly.

I can also be a smarta$$ sometimes. I get that honestly too. But the very vast majority of the time I'm not intending to be demeaning. Just throwing a friendly jab. That's all the zone comment was - a tongue in cheek nod to the idea that many times the plea to see zone is the last gasp of a frustrated basketball fan who is all out of other answers. But I agree that there are perfectly legitimate basketball reasons for playing a zone too.

I like it here. I'm fortunate that I have a handful of family and friends who I can talk Illinois football and basketball with. But my need to talk Illini hoops was never fully satiated until I came to this board. It's a great community that Dan has built.

People need to stop blaming the refs so much in games like this. Were they perfect? No, far from it. But they were consistent. Yes NU set illegal screens, the same screens Coleman does almost every possession. Epps clearly grabbed the other players waste before he was tripped. Someone said something about Matt’s charge??? That was a textbook charge, not sure how anyone can say that was a bad call. They made the same calls for us as they did for them. In games where it isn’t called the same both ways I can agree on bashing the refs, but this game, just no.
I'd agree that the refs called this game fairly consistently which is a welcome change from what seems like the entire B10 season. They were allowing moving screens, contact with the body on drives, and were calling reaches and players jumping into a jump shooter. And they did this throughout the game for both teams and let the kids play. That's really all you can ask from a crew. You don't need to be great or perfect but you do need to call the game consistently for both teams and I think they did that.

That said, there was one instance that the refs were involved in and it should never happen, and that was when Sencire was taking a jump shot and landed on the ref's foot. That was a major error by the ref as he was not only not in proper position for that play, but he also put himself in a rather dangerous area for the player. You can't do that as ref, especially at this level of competition. Even if you get every rule in the book wrong, you cannot get in a shooter's landing area. Other than that, I thought the refs did a pretty solid job this game in terms of consistency.

Epps with the grab, Nicholson with the ballroom pivot into his partner’s arms. I’m sure Epps was trying anything he could to get around these absurd “screens”.
On the last NU play, their screener just ran right into our guy. Didnt even attempt to get set. I’ve seen that called a million times. It was a clear foul. Nnanna Egwu got called on that a million times during his career.

I had a fairly restful night last night after the days events and the awesome comeback by the beloved.......

TSJ showed no ill effects from the concussion and while it took him the 1st half to get his legs underneath him , Oh what a second half he had ............his offense was spectacular , but his defense was equally great , especially done with 3 fouls on him..

MM was a no show in the first half but came on strong in the second half also........his getting to the FT line on 3-4 3 point attempts was huge......

Sincere was the " Tasmanian Devil " that we have come to expect and enjoy as it lifted up the whole squad.......his layup to tie the game at 59 was equally impressive as he went to his opposite right hand for the bucket.......

cohawk was great on defense and his block of buie on that last shot was impressive as was the pass out by Ty Rodgers downcourt to TSJ and the corresponding FT's to salt away the game............

I wonder what goes through peoples minds when they post such garbage in the game thread.....Is the game thread a license for anything goes as far as ripping the Illini ???????

Seems senseless to me to have a game thread and then view the rash of insults about the Illini.......JMHO

You are on to something here.

The Illini have restored their National ‘Rep’ as a top program to be reckoned with. Big Ten titles have a way of doing that. And snagging top recruits every year.
And so a victory over the Illini is a ‘big deal’. It can make a season for a program. So this does in fact bring out the best in the opposition players (and coafhes).

That’s why the Illini cannot afford to come out flat or uninspired in any games. They have to meet and beat the intensity and desire brought to the court by the guys who want to beat you.

And we’ll all seen what happens when the Illini DON’T come out ready to play. Someone on the Illini (a player on the floor) has to be the ‘bad cop’ and get these guys quickly in line when they are flat aka Michael kicking tail on the Bulls when they needed it. (Does anyone currently on the Illini have that in their personality?).

Bottom Line: These games where some guy just goes off on the Illini is a show of respect FOR the Illini.
Great observation....I thought we had kicked BBuie's a$$ in previous meetings so I looked it up...

"Buie, who was 0-6 against Illinois prior to this season and averaged just 7.4 points on 27% shooting in those games, tore up the Illini’s ball-screen coverage and made his first four 3-pointers to give Northwestern a huge halftime lead."

Just happy happy ... and thankful I didn't start watching the DVR from the beginning; instead choosing to join the game live at about the 12 minute mark in the second half.

You must love The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as much as I do. Just watched it for the hundredth time-always gets me.
It's probably my favorite western, and it's soooo much not really a western with the way Ford messes with all the western tropes he'd created over the prior 30 years. I wrote a graduate thesis that included a bunch of analysis on it.

I agree with you somewhat except they were setting moving screens all game, no calls. Unfortunately we don't set as many screens so we weren't benefitting from that near as much and we are better or just try harder at getting set. Also while Epps did foul first, the tripping that followed should have been an F1 at least and possibly an F2. Shades of Grayson Allen. That being said we dug our own hole in the first half. Glad we came out the second half with a new mindset and purpose and pulled off an incredible comeback win.
