I rewound the game to where RJM was called for a flop and watched it in slo-mo. It looked to me to be a clear charge as RJ was retreating, but had established his position. The MU guy not only mowed him down, but extended his arm while doing so. There was a lot of contact on that play, so a flop call was absurd. I could have seen the ref call RJ for a foul, tho I think it would have been a bad call too.
I thought it looked like a charge (or a no-call) on the replay too. Maybe Trent would have gotten that call but they declined to give it to RJ.

So, the 2nd flop called was against Melendez, right? I only saw a quick replay with no comments by the commentators to elaborate on it, as I recall. It appeared to me Melendez was back-peddling from the man he was guarding and it was just his momentum that took him to land on the floor, thus it was not an over-exaggeration on his part nor a valid flop, right?
Someone mentioned earlier in this thread or in game thread that if it wasn’t called a flop likely could have been called a blocking foul. That’s how I saw it too. Didn’t really have issue with flop call there.

100% it made DMW have a really poor game also. Against any pressure D he simply does not have the ball handling skills. Problem is Plummer does not either. We need Belo back bad.
You are dismissing the excellent games that DMW has had against strong pressure D. I suppose that you must be making the erroneous assumption that when he has a good game, the other team imposed no pressure.

We were out hustled most of this game and should not have to pull these games out of the fire in the last couple of minutes. 40 minutes not 4. Without Trent we probably lose the last 3 games.
Too much MI speed and quickness. Sometimes, no matter how much one hustles, it doesn't make you quicker or faster than the opposing player.

That shows you that statistics don’t mean everything. Trent is far the more valuable player than Grandison or Plummer
I don't really disagree with you. But I'd be curious to know how these are calculated. Not super familiar with Torvik. Advanced metrics are often better at identifying things that the biased fan's naked eye can't.

But man, I do hope Trent finally cracks one of the All B1G teams. He's deserving.

You are misreading, but that is ok I said nothing about any of his other games. I love DMW as a player. He had an off game, and in my opinion (this is a fan forum which implies opinions) pressure defense is tough for him to act as the point. See what you did was say “I am erroneous” versus saying what your opinion is? Major problem with fan forums people can’t have a discussion without either direct hostility or passive aggressive hostility. Remember I never said anything about any other game try to look at that first before making your own assumptions about my thought process. It makes for much better discussion.

Thanks so much!

I'm surprised ANY of the Michigan players showed up tonight. Kind of nice to see Michigan forced to play with a player or two out. Of course the Michigan pundits never brought up the fact that it might have been different if we'd had Curbello back as well? No?
I believe that it benefitted UM with Hunter out. They were able to play much faster without him on the floor. Their inexperience showed but, I don't think that we were prepared for UM's athleticism.

I think the last two games have shown what we’ll see going forward. Teams will extend their defense , not allowing Illinois to run their offense. They may also make more of an effort to make someone besides Trent handle the ball. I think we’ll be seeing a lot of ugly basketball. (Except Purdue . They do what they do.)
Teams have been extending their D against us since before the Iowa game. Even back to Mizzoo.

Well, we didn't need him last night. We had exceptional point guard play from Frazier. 18 pts. 7 assists (with only 2 turnovers) as he penetrated often and made excellent passes to open teammates on the perimeter. Whatever shortcomings we may have had, none of them involved point guard play. Oh almost forgot. Frazier also knocked down some treys. Curbelo doesn't have that card in his deck.
I guess I see this different? Trent is doing a tremendous job running the point and will get a vast majority of the point minutes even when/if Curbello comes back. That being said, Trent can’t play 40 minutes per game or worse if he gets in foul trouble.

Any team that has watched us knows that if Trent is off the floor press Illinois hard. DMW has done the best he can, but he just does not have tremendous ball handling skills. Plummer is even worse. DMW is so much more valuable to us as the do a little of everything guy than trying to run the point IMHO. Curbello would be such a huge addition to this team as a change of pace player coming off the bench. We the. Can play both the “4 out” offense along with PNR. That is just really hard for other teams to match.

I just don't understand these takes.

1) How many times do you see this team fail to get the ball to Kofi in the half court. If they can't get it to him, the shot selection usually consists of some sort of contested jumper. Curbelo can get his own shot/create for others.
2) Every game, the lack of paint penetration is obvious. Trent (& Plummer to a lesser extent) can do it sometimes, but his handles as a point guard are average by point guard standards. I say this loving Trent Frazier. Curbelo can get to any spot on the floor he wants.
3) Do you not watch what happens when Trent goes out? The best way to describe it is watching a runner run a marathon with cement shoes.
4) I don't have the stats but Frazier has been playing a looooot of minutes out of necessity for ball handling.

Curbelo did not play well when he was in, duh. I obviously cannot tell you why but probably some combination of: Preseason expectations/ New team & role without Ayo/ Not 100% physically. While it's clear he wasn't playing great, the ceiling of this team is way higher if Curbelo comes back. Sure, he has to work things out, but his talent is undeniable. I just don't get how people can't see that after his impact to the team last year. Without another dynamic guard to get us a bucket when we're struggling, or to penetrate the paint, or to feed Kofi in the post, this team won't go as far as they can.
Some excellent observations here. Belo doesn’t just get Kofi the ball - he often draws/breaks down the defense in the process, leaving Kofi with more open lanes to the rim and not always having to make post moves with one or more defenders collapsing on him after he receives the pass.

Right now, Kofi is 4th in the nation in scoring, two points behind the leader, Keegan Murray. I think it’s not going too far out on a limb to say that, if Belo had been in the lineup all year, Kofi’s PPG would be more than two points higher.

Key is will Curbello actually come back this year? The news is so “hush hush” hard to really know?

Most likely heavily weighted to efficiency. Trent has a worse FG% and 3pt% than both Plummer and Grandison (as well as worse TS% and eFG%) and a higher turnover %. He also averages fewer pts on a per minute or per possession basis than either.

That being said, he is being asked to do a lot more and play a lot more minutes than either. He's taking a lot of bad shots because he's often the fall back option when things aren't clicking. He doesn't have the luxury to pass up contested shots in the way Plummer and Grandison often do. Add in that advanced metrics are not great at quantifying individual defense, where Trent is clearly better than Plummer and Grandison. I agree that Trent is more valuable than Plummer and Grandison (who are also both great!)

So far this season we’ve seen Trent just take over games when his team needed him to.

For all his great qualities, the fact that he’s doing this points right back to another great quality of his: Team First. Ego, No.

How? Trent voluntarily let Ayo take the lead Alpha over the Illini when Ayo arrived. Trent sent aside his ego and personal stats as he knew what Ayo represented to the team and the program’s revival in general. Trent learned how to become a tenacious defender that drives the opponents crazy. He did not pout. He expanded his game and became a better player.

And now that Ayo has moved on, Trent has slipped right back to being floor leader and Mister Clutch when the team is in trouble and the game is on the line.

For all the high marks that Trent will show in the record books when his Illini career is over, it is his quality of maturity and selflessness that really sets him apart from many players.

He is a most remarkable young man. And a joy to watch in whatever way he plays his game.

We are now on a nice 4-game win streak vs. Michigan, all against Juwan. In fact, we are on at least a 1-game winning streak vs. 12 of our 13 Big Ten rivals:

W6 vs. Northwestern

W5 vs. Nebraska

W4 vs. Iowa
W4 vs. Michigan
W4 vs. Minnesota

W3 vs. Indiana
W3 vs. Penn State
W3 vs. Purdue
W3 vs. Wisconsin

W2 vs. Ohio State
W2 vs. Rutgers

W1 vs. Maryland

The only losing streak?

L3 vs. Michigan State. And I am hoping to change that very soon! If we can beat Purdue and Michigan, we will be on a winning streak vs. every single Big Ten opponent for the first time since 2005 to 2006.
Well, Mizzoo recently had a 3 gane win streak against us, all against BU. So does that imply that Martin is a better coach than BU?

You said, "against ANY pressure D". That has been proven to be erroneous. There was no assumption to make.

We really need to sub Podz for him. Using Williams at the point causes turnovers and stagnant offense. Trent is a gamer, but even he needs a blow now and then.
I agree, the Monte show needs to end. Great guy but he gets exposed game in and game out. Why BU plays him over the Podz is amazing. We need to get the youth worked in as Monte is gone after this year and they need experience

What will Curbelo’s role be when he comes back? I think he would be great of the bench like his role was last year. If he tries to do too much I think we will be out of sync. At least for a while. We definitely need him though.
I am hoping we put AP on the bench as he can give us offense off the bench. We need to be bigger as Hawk needs to start as well.
