Illinois 70, Missouri 64 POSTGAME

#226
Just looking at the box score for the third time. Steals was big and reflects the defensive effort and focus. Along with turnovers, theirs validating that fact and ours showing more focus on taking care of the ball, these stats tell the story as much as anything. We certainly did not shoot lights out but used effort and focus to win a big game.

Mostly, I truly love watching this team play defense when everyone is working their tales off. So critical to B1G play. This team is not preparing for a deep tourney run this year........but rather next year with everyone back. They appear to enjoy playing with each other and for BU....critical to the future.

At times he does have pretty bad court vision. Towards the end of the game Missouri was doubling almost as soon as he caught the ball. He always seems to hold the ball to long but somehow find a get out of it.

Be careful of the eyeball test and small sample size. This is the first time he has spent major time in the post so he is learning. Prior to this year Black had 21 assists total in 74 games. This year through 14 games? 18 Assists.

The improvement is remarkable even if there are still growing pains.

His assists are up just from working through the pinch post... but rarely kicks the ball back out when he catches it down low.
In the NMSU game they scouted that out and stripped the ball from him a couple of times as soon as he got it.
It would really keep opponents defenses guessing if he balanced that out more, especially with his ability to shoot.

He's been a mostly pick and pop guy, and the post work is a new thing. What I am saying is, he has shown an ability to adapt to the system and get better. I think there is ample reason to believe he will adapt to the doubles on the post with time.

Again 11% Assist rate this year is a very good sign and I give Leron and Underwood credit for improvement.

Perhaps it was too much reading/lurking on here, but I was quite impressed with Tilmon. He didn't get the ball much due to our pressure but he knew what to do with the ball when he did and he didn't try to do too much. Going in I thought he'd be a big oaf that couldn't do anything. He will be good and we'd be a hell of a lot better with him. I hope he busts out for double-doubles from here on out and goes to the NBA.

Note- no idea how to spell oaf.

I think you nailed oaf. And I really don't want to face him next year, so hoping he goes pro too.

Absolutely. Anyone saying otherwise was just sour grapes. He's a stud, and we'd be in a much, much better spot with him. Too bad. Hope he doesn't stay at Mizzou too long.

Well said. He's got a really bright future and I'm pretty sure we're 14-0 with him in our lineup.

I don't have the link, but I read an article before the game where his mom said that he never wanted to go to Illinois - it was her pushing him there all along. This is pretty consistent with all the interviews with recruiting gurus throughout the years. If that's the case then Illinois fans really have no reason to hold a grudge against him.

I don't get the complaints that Leron should pass more. He is shooting over 50% from 2 and 3, plus 84% on FT's. Not only is he scoring the ball, but he's also efficient. If anyone should be passing the ball more, it's Trent. The 22 pts covers up the fact that he took a lot of bad shots, specifically extremely difficult layups.

Why would you wish him anything. He left us, so bye. I don't care what he does, but certainly not wishing him NBA success.

Exactly! Leron is the last player on our team that should look to pass back out unless it's to AJ alone in the corner:illinois:

We need to show the rest of college basketball that we have some form of inside game without the bigs. I know I'm having fun watching Black in the middle.

Okay, I took some well-deserved grief for how I worded that post. Don't get me wrong, I actually love Leron as both a person and a basketball player. He's one of my favorites, and his ability is not in question. I usually have high confidence in his scoring prowess and don't argue with him shooting a majority of the time from anywhere on the court.

What I was trying to explain was that it's not the best strategy for him to have a one-track mindset of going to the basket every time he gets the ball near the post. A good team with good scouting is going to key in on this. It's like a quarterback who keys in on one wide receiver and possibly misses other (better) options from time to time. He should have his mind (and eyes) open when he gets the ball. Anyway, go Illini!

That makes sense but teams haven't double teamed him because they generally have a taller player on him. As long as it's one on one, I want him to shoot the ball.

I wondered at the game whether or not the crowd would go the "booing" route. Was able to get that question resolved pretty danged quickly.

I'm still not 100% one way or the other on it... but Tilmon didn't help his case at all with the "Missouri by 30" comment. I think I'm more on the corner of "all's fair in love and war" on this score. I cheered extra-loud whenever Tilmon got stuffed or stripped (this happened multiple times).

At the game, it was clear that Frazier is just full to the brim with confidence right now and is a better scorer than TJL. It was a pretty rough game for TJL - Harris bullied him quite a bit, even after he got T'd up by Teddy. I think Frazier is going to overtake Lucas in the same way that Lucas overtook Tate last season.

Mark Smith is appearing in post-game summaries as having had a strong game, but I'm not sure I totally agree. His 10-point tally was inflated by two catch-and-shoot 3's. Otherwise, he still looks like a freshman who hasn't had the lightbulb go off yet as to what the college game is like. Very tentative overall. Once he gets there, though, watch out.

I'm torn on whether or not to give the game ball to Frazier or Black. Leron was just an absolute rock for us in this game. He bottled up Tilmon and Porter and was our only reliable weapon on offense. One of his best games as an Illini ever, no question.

Alstork had another game where the box score does not tell the story. His defense was top-notch. When he was in the same corner of the court the ball was, Mizzou tended to freeze up and turn it over more often. In a way I feel bad for Alstork because he isn't putting up the flashy scoring numbers I know he wanted to. But he's doing the little things and, personally, impresses me a great deal. Only gripe against him for this game was him trying to make a layup over a Mizzou double-team and earning a turnover instead of dishing out to a locked-and-loaded Mark Smith for an uncontested three.

The game environment was great. Better than the last few years. Never got as loud as it did during Ray's shot, but it was still definitely fun. We're hearing "sellout crowd" and "best crowd since 200x," but there were a lot of empty seats. And they weren't all season ticket holders either. That really baffles me. Who buys a ticket and then just doesn't go? Are those empty seats casualties of scalpers or something? I don't get it.

Favorite moment: in the hallways right after the game there was a "MIZ-NOZ" chant.

Not sure why you say hitting open 3s inflates Smith's stats?

Cuonzo has an offense?

Being offensive does not mean having an offense. :)

Actually, I liked Cuonzo just fine until he went to Missouri. I thought he was not treated well at TN and was happy for him to have success at California. The Porter and Tilmon recruitments were enough to make me change my mind.

Not so much that, but rather that hitting a pair of open 3's doesn't mean that he's "returned to form," to borrow a term I saw in the press. I'll taken open 3's all night long, don't get me wrong.

EDIT: in case you guys need a late Christmas present, Tigerboard is still vastly amusing. Cheers, IL.

I hope Tilmon loses every BR game, goes on to a long NBA career, and then tells anyone and everyone he encounters for the next 50+ years of his life that he wished he’d have gone to Illinois.

Perfect take. 👌. Although I bet he plays in one more tops before he goes pro. He sure looks a lot better than he did his senior year in HS.

Rising tide raises all ships. I hope he is successful, that the rivalry goes from regionally to nationally strong. That Brad puts a hurt on them each year with some fun style basketball!
