Illinois 71, Wisconsin 70 POSTGAME

#151
Yo, there was a graphic during the game that stated how Wisconsin had held us under 70 points for an even longer stretch than our 15 game losing streak.

So we erased two marks of extreme shame tonight.

In a completely unrelated point: I'm watching Greg Gard in the post-game right now, and... don't ch'all think it's mad dumb when journalists ask coaches and players like "how much does this loss hurt, given blah blah blah... "?

I mean, what do they expect these players and coaches to do? To quantify the pain of the loss?

"Yeah, this loss hurt - I'd say it was somewhere between a serious toothache - you know, the kind where ya gums are a little discolored and swollen? - yeah, so between that and not paying attention and sitting on a golf ball."

"Yeah, this loss was rough. How much it hurt? I'd say about as much as when I was in my late 30s and my wife gained a significant amount of weight, so we stopped being intimate for a while. Like 3 years. Then one day I come home early and find her in bed with the manager of the team I was coaching at the time. He was 17. Yeah, I'd say that kind of pain."

Barriers to winning:
1) on the road
2) foul trouble
3) poor free throw shooting
4) Wisconsin bench lighting it up

Things that went right:
1) defense that is consistent
2) consistent energy...didn't fall asleep during any part of the game
3) kept fighting which was most impressive
4) clear team roles and leadership

Good to see that even though we were far from perfect, we still got it done.

Not being a downer, but man these guys better figure out how to drain shots, so we can win more games comfortably.

So I lived up in the woods in WI for a year and a half, in Door County where lot's of Chicagoan's own vacay homes and/or vacay during the summer. While there I learned that they refer to said Illinoisans as FIB's.......(F...ing Illinois Bast....s)..or FIBWAB's...(FIB With A Boat).

I took it in stride as they are mostly a friendly bunch of cheese eating, cow milking, bar flys.....but this year we pwned them!!

So remember on your vaycay in WI this year and wear your orange and blue as a "friendly" reminder!!
We have a cabin upnorth. Whenever anyone says anything about FIBs, I say, “Yeah, I’m a Fighting Illini Bitch, and proud of it!” that usually shuts them up because they don’t know what to say, especially this year...

I mean, like, how you gonna expect your players to respect you after they find out that your wife let the team manager smash. Skinny lil Martin with the crooked spectacles - AND teeth - whose job it is to pick up all the nasty towels after the players shower.

That pain is real.

And, here are the highlights from the last time Illinois scored 70+ points in a game against Wisconsin before tonight:

Thanks for posting that. Yeah, I remember
Jack's two threes and Augustine's dunk as if it were yesterday. Auggie had a big steal and a breakaway dunk also. I L L

The play of the game may have been when there was a TV timeout with about 12 minutes to go and the camera showed Underwood calmly talking to a ref - presumably about the foul disparity (7-2). Right after that moment the Badgers picked up 2-3 ticky tack fouls and that thought was probably on the refs minds the rest of the game (helping with a correct no call on their last shot)

1st half: IL FG%: 39% :: WI FG%: 50%
2nd half: IL FG%: 62% :: WI FG%: 38%

1st half did just enough to keep the nose above water.

2nd half played the game as it should be played, at a level this team is capable of playing.

1st half (bubble?) NIT.

2nd half pushing sweet 16 (IMHO).

Most metrics in this game would've indicated a loss, and likely a bad one. Kudos to Coach and the everyday guys for sticking with it every possession and not playing scared.
Now go kick Rutgers !!!!

Thank goodness Wiscy didn't foul us more.
8 out of 15? Seriously?

Well ...........................

For every 2 attempts at the line, we would have got 1 point out of the effort.

So, we got 15 attempts, made 8. IF we had got 23 (which is what WI got), we would have made 12 and won by 5 points and not 1. :)

So, they should have not fouled us at all and taken their chances at a lower %age in FGs.

Yea we really have to work on our free throws...

It seemed like not one of our players tonight could make two free throws in a row!
