Illinois 72, Nebraska 66 POSTGAME

Miles said something to the effect of Illinois playing well for a team with nothing to play for.

What?

Other than the fact that every game is something to play for, our guys have respectability to play for.

One could spin that to say that he's used to his teams giving up long before now. ;)

Totally understand the negative microscope on MS, fairly or unfairly he has underwhelmed this year. BUT, many factors going against him; to me he really seems like a good kid who has kept a positive attitude despite the box scores. I appreciate his demeanor and root hard for him because of it.

To pick on this and that is questionable as we could do that to each player on any given day. He had a Plus game today, NO QASKED!

With his hype he essentially had nowhere to go but down and I get that, however; I for one am going to support the kid to the nth degree because he really seems to be a good and modest kid.

Mark Smith, I believe in you, gain your swagger and make us all believers!

My biggest reason for supportig him is he stuck with his state school when the big wigs came calling. So I’ll show him the same loyalty.

Sure this has been mentioned, but this was the first of four games in 8 days. No back to back home games.

Didn't get to watch the game but watched highlights and checked box score. Find it interesting that Frazier listed for only 1 assist but he had 2 just on the gifs.

Gonna blast the refs. How do you not see Watson hit the ball out! Easy call. Last foul on Nichols was bad! So, tired of hearing the over used term "freshman mistake". Stop making freakin' excuses. A bad play is a bad play no matter what class.

One of the keys to the win, was JCL/TF limiting Watson to 3 pts. on 1 of 9 shooting.

Well, not so much.
Makes a big 3 after being anonymous.
Then fumbles the ball away.
Then commits a foul.
Then commits another foul.
Shoots a beyond-3 point arc airball.

I don't want to exaggerate Mark Smith's performance, but you conveniently omitted arguably his most impressive and important play -- his drive to the hoop for the And-1. That was a brief flashback to what he showed earlier in the year, and the sort of move that we all expected to see from Mark Smith this season.

He played well, and showed confidence. That's really important.

A loose ball led to a wild scramble with at least three pileups. Bodies were scattered everywhere. The ball kept squirting into the air. And the fact that his entire team got in on the scrum pleased Underwood greatly.

“That was the game,” Underwood said. “That’s everything, everything, everything we have to be about. That wasn’t one guy on the floor. That was three, four, all of them fighting to win the game.

“They didn’t care about a little burn from the floor. They didn’t care about getting knocked. We haven’t seen that often and (today) I knew we were in great shape when we got to that point.”

If TF connected on the 3 at the end (last pass/squirt) it would have brought down house. I thought we seemed to have butter fingers on that play. The play itself didnt mean much on the scoreboard, but the scrum was symbolic of how much the guys wanted to fight/win.

And don’t forget the three hustle plays he made down the stretch that were HUGE. 2 contested rebounds that if he doesn’t go after it with confidence they would have been easy Nebraska rebounds. Can’t overlook that little stuff in the long game of confidence. Great game? Not for most but certainly could be a pivotal game for MS the rest of this season and beyond.

I was hoping that this would have been one of the animated gifs.

Great fight and heart to win this one. Punched hard at the beginning of the second half, they fought hard to regain the lead and continued to fight and scrap to the win. Give me more please :thumb:

Yep. He'll be fine. He sure didn't look lost out there tonight, although to me it also looked as if he wasn't sure where to go in this offense sometimes. It'll come. He made a great drive to the basket early on - vintage MS from high school days.

But Leron! And we get him back next season, God willing.

I'm not an analyst, but it also looked to me like Trent was double-, triple-teamed by Nebraskie when he started to make his moves. Maybe that's part of the reason Leron had his way.

Again, I ask, is it possible, if he wanted to and Coach would let him, that MS could play baseball for Illinois? He had a baseball offer to Missouri.

You're just kidding about the baseball part right?

Whenever we get in trouble, we get passive, and we get slow. Ball doesn't move, ball doesn't pop, our movements become really slow
- Brad Underwood

No kidding. This is IMO a Groce legacy that is turning out to be very hard to shake. Great to see improvement today. We definitely had a few stretches where movement wasn't great, but they weren't long droughts, and overall we were significantly better playing Underwood's system.

It's not impossible, but MS would have had to be throwing all along since early December in order to be ready to pitch. I doubt he has had the time. I'm also not sure he has fully recovered from whatever his issue was (I really don't know). My son plays high school basketball and baseball (D1 arm) and it takes a lot of work to be able to do what's needed for basketball and then baseball in your spare time (throwing program). I'm sure it would be even tougher to do it at the D1 level for both sports.

That was (mostly) a fun game to watch. LB carried us to victory. Nice contributions from TF, MS, KN. A fast turnaround for MSU. Hopefully we don't come out flat (either half).

Great defense on Watson, as noted. Really good job on the boards. Didn't quit when started going south in second half. Did IL recruit , Roby?

... and Alstork on the bench

Yep. Also, Smith made a great defensive play down low, reading the play and coming across the lane to neutralize a baseline drive and dunk before it happened. Not sure Alstork played after fouling 94' from the hoop about 5 minutes into the half. We may have seen a major reversal.

Speaking of that, TJL, TF, and MS swinging the ball on the perimeter helped with the zone, too.

Who remembers Serge playing the point as a frosh in 1999?
