Illinois 73, Indiana 71 POSTGAME

Alstork was a bonehead for walking to the basket. Look at the GIF. He did not touch Morgan. But a foul could've been called, remember TV was reffing, just because it was close and if the game was not over when Morgan touched the ball on the rebound. Once Morgan touched the ball game over. Still Alstork should not have been close to the basket. Walk away man, walk away. I think Alstork may have been taunting but could not see if he mouth was moving as the GIF is fairly short.

If you see the sideline angle video which is part of the Illinois highlights, you notice no one on the bench, or behind the bench starts celebrating because I think everyone thought a foul was actually called.

With regard to the end of game situation, we were always taught:

(1) miss the shot,
(2) put it up softly so it doesn't carom far from the basket,
(3) try to have the shot come off the side of the rim, and
(4) as soon as the shot leaves your hands, start stepping backwards from the line.

In such situation, if you go into the lane, only bad things can happen.

I think the point is that that would have gone down as THE ALL-TIME DUMBEST WAY TO LOSE A 100% UNLOSABLE GAME. That, alone, merits extending the statute.

PS: This team has to have set the record for needing to be told things that you absolutely should not have to be told.

DaMonte - Just get it in and we win. Ok, break!

wait, wait... DaMonte, don't throw it a.) to the other team, under the basket, or b.) all the way down the court without it being touched. LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE and we win. Cool. (What?!)

Alstork- I want you to miss both FTs, bc if you do, we LITERALLY CAN NOT LOSE. Wait, wait wait. I almost forgot. ... Unless you go after your miss (what?!) and foul the rebounder (are you f*&*ing kidding me?!?!), ok? So don't do that.

And has everyone already repressed that it was a last-second foul by Alstork in a tie game that sent Maryland to the line for the win ?

Apparently he didn’t learn enough from that teachable moment either.

To emphasize the point that there are consequences for one's actions, sit Alstork for the first half against Rutgers. I'm all for it. The more I watch that gif, the more infuriated, as just a little ol' O&B fan, I get.

That was not a bad foul and there were far bigger issues in that game.

it would have been a "bad foul" if it was called a foul. it was a good no call....and a good teaching moment after a win.

Probably the most memorialized "no call" ever on this board!

As soon as the IU player touched the ball the game as over. Even IF Alstork touched him, it was already game over.

Let it go :tsk:

The point is that he was VERY close to touching the guy BEFORE the defender touched the rebound. Had he fouled before the touch we're shooting free throws at the other end. It was a completely STUPID play by a 5th year senior. He shouldn't have been within 20 feet of the guy. Don't even give the stripes a chance to make a call.

I came out of my chair with both hands in the air screaming "You effing IDIOT" because I thought he fouled him before the touch on the rebound. I completely get BU's reaction. Don't tsk us just because we won. We could have easily lost with Valentine officiating. That's just his kind of call. It's hard to let go of that kind of stupidity.

Hate to keep this debate alive because to me obvious mistake by Alstork. Don't give ref or timekeeper opportunity to make a crucial error and award free throws in that situation.

I seem to remember that time should start when legal free throw (hits rim or goes in hoop) is determined to be a miss and not when first touched by a rebounder. Could be wrong or rule could have changed but this is what I remember from many years ago.

Looked it up and it's pretty clear the clock starts when a miss is legally touched by a player on the floor. So if Alstork would have fouled the guy before he touched the ball, the clock would not have started and it would have been free throws at the other end. Fortunately our free throw defense had been pretty good all night but you can just see the opponent stepping up and hitting them both the way the season has gone up until now.

Fortunately it all.worked out and maybe we can keep the "streak" alive against Rutgers.

Valentine didn’t officiate this game.

You can commit a foul with the clock stopped. Happens all the time on out-of-bounds plays. In fact, oftentimes teams deliberately foul in such circumstances with the express intent of not letting any time expire.

It looks like the loss to IL will be followed by three more losses by IU (Purdue, OSU tonight and MSU).

Maybe the beginning of the end for Coach Miller at IU.

I expect that he will be gone in three years.
