Illinois 73, Indiana 71 POSTGAME

Although it been debated here in the post game plenty..., the Mark Alstork bonehead play at the end is EXACTLY the type of call TV Ted would make. Alstork plays better defense than I thought he would, but his offense, his basketball IQ, and his body language aren't what I expected from him (I'm putting that mildly). Mike LaTulip hyping up the Illini may have been the worst thing he ever did for his alma matter.

Valentine makes stupid, "I've never seen that" calls constantly. He bailed us out on a charge we took in the 2nd half where either TJL or Frazier was just off balance and fell backwards. He's probably the only ref in the country who would even think about making that call, so why even give him the opportunity?

I agree with the others who said that action almost takes the joy out of winning that game. Because we could just have easily been having another "I can't believe we lost on something else I've never seen before" conversation today.

Why? Any Illini fan of a young and struggling team that has lost some heartbreakers and finally beats its biggest rival and can't be excited is no Illini fan in my book.

Don't get me wrong I am very happy we won. I hate the phrase because it is used all the time, especially early in the season when we scrape by cupcakes, to ignore a ton of issues with the team.

Out of our 9 conference games, this was probably the 2nd or 3rd worst performance. Yet, this is our W?

This site calculates the Pythagorean expectation (based on offensive and defensive efficiency) for each game, so is basically a rating of a team's performance.

Going by this, Illinois' performance this game was rated 73. That ties with their performance in the Northwestern game as the 5th best or 4th worst in conference play so far. Illinois' overall rating is 71, so their performance this game is seemingly right in line with the season so far.

Side note: The Wisconsin game, with a rating of 5, is tied with two others as the worst performance going back to 2008. The other two are the 59-36 loss at Minnesota in 2009 and the infamous loss at Nebraska in 2012.

Ugly game, but getting a win is nice. Great seeing TJL play well.

I read through some of the game thread, and there were several posts guaranteeing we'd lose during the course of the game. Plenty of room for criticizing some of the players in this game, but seems to be plenty of room to criticize some posters as fans too. I-L-L

Of course it was a sloppy game, IU threw us a curve ball by being so undersized!! We obviously were not prepared to ply a team we can look straight in the eyes.

Must have hired a writing staff. In the very infrequent times I have listened to his analysis on the Big Ten Network I have not been impressed. But I am probably biased since he is a NW alum.

Like I have been saying Kipper can be one of our better players, even with an off game he was our 3rd leading scorer.

Tejon, please stop the transfer rumors. Top teams have good back-ups, he is a good PG with a good future.

What we need are bigs, still think we need two true bigs next year.

Still not sure if things work out going forward the way maybe TeJon will want them, but I for one stand corrected on the transfer talks...

Really think if we can keep Tejon and Trent in the game at the same time, they seem to compliment each other well and feed off each other a little also...not sure if they truly like each other, but then again they don't have to if that is the case.

I would love to see the following lineup going forward as I think it gives us the best chance, with exception of a hot hand, of winning.

Starters:

Trent-Tejon-Kipper-Alstork-Black

Bench in order all things equal

Finke-Smith-Ebo-Williams-Jordan

Really think Jordan is one dimensional, limited athletically, and suspect defensively. Early on he gave us hope, has regressed, and as much as I think he is a GREAT ambassador for the ILLINI, it is what it is for him.

Hopefully mark and damonte respond similarly to the way Kipper and Tejon have from being benched. Sometimes being forced to sit and watch can be what you need to let a message sink in

Tejon and Frazier on the floor at the same time was often pretty dynamic. The drive, kick to Tejon, extra pass to Kipper was a perfect characterization of how/why those two playing together works (in theory).

Alstork fouled a guy on the FT and the refs missed it. I thought they called it for a second. BU was screaming at him comin off the court.

There was .1 left. As soon as he grabbed the rebound, the game was over. The refs didn't miss it because anything he did came after the game was over.

Not sure about Smith, other than his continual wayward defense.

I'm okay with BU being tough on Smith about his penchant to foul. Send the message: I want to play you, but I can't if you are going to commit 2 fouls in 4 min. Want to play? Play good defense without committing dumb fouls.

I shouldn't have quoted "clever" as I had no issues with that decision to miss it. It's just that if you're forcing them to side-arm heave a shot with .000001% chance of going in, cool. Don't you dare sprint into that player's cylinder, trip him, and force the ref to make a bang-bang call. Odds of that being a call were obscenely higher than the odds of the player making the shot.

You can't catch and shoot with .1 left, so it was impossible for him to make it. Once he caught the ball, the game was over.

I know we all complain a lot, but we are blessed to have T Frazier. I don't think anybody thought he would be this good this early. He is outplaying many of the veteran guards in the league.

He should have run away from that like a punt receiver does when he's not going to catch the ball.

But because I don't know, when does the clock start when there's a missed free-throw like that? When it leaves his hands? Hits the rim or backboard? When it hits someone's hands or the floor?

For those of you who understand that learning a new offense takes time (of which I am not one unfortunately), I watched this SFA spread offense video and was encouraged to see that I recognize some similarities. Obviously, we still have a long way to go, but I do believe there's a method to the madness.

#173
You do understand that you can foul someone while going for a rebound, yes? Alstork very nearly did just that.

Pretty tough to do when you're the guy that shot the ball and therefore can't go over the FT line until after it hits the rim/backboard. Alstork came near the guy after he came down with the ball. 1) Game was already over, 2) he didn't touch him.

I'm going to pull it up on the DVR when I get home, because as I was watching it live it sure looked like significant contact, and I don't know why BU would have yelled "That was a foul!" if it wasn't.
