Illinois 73, Indiana 71 POSTGAME

Needed a win for confidence, but doubt this does it. As someone earlier said, thank God our free throw defense was tough. I guess if we can keep that up, we might be OK.

I'm not arguing whether he had a right to be furious -- he did. What I am saying is that he didn't have to call Alstork out right at that moment. Couldn't he have waited until they got to the locker room?

Edit-->I guess that is just tough love from BU.
BU is understandably a little paranoid after a lot of close losses.

In addition, his on-court emotional filters are pretty limited.

1. Woooo
2. Lots of bickering in this post game thread...guys chill we won.
3. Thought BU yelled a little too hard at MA...but he is a 5th year senior so he will be fine.
4. I think critiquing of players to a certain level is totally fine. They are given packages valued at probably $40K/year to entertain us and bring $$$ to the school.

Psychologically, this was big. Get the next one and you are creating some important momentum and confidence for this young group. At this point, ugly sloppy wins are fine. Just learn how to scrap, claw, and dig your way to Ws and get the magical feelings and jujus that come from winning.

I re-watched the final play. Yelling was justified. MA is "clever" in missing the last free throw, but it leaves us only up two. The only way IU wins the game is if one of our guys runs to the IU player getting the rebound and does something aggressive. That is EXACTLY what MA did. It was obnoxiously stupid and spastic by him. He HAS to know better. My goodness, we just need our guys to f'ing be smart.

You could clearly hear what Underwood said on tv. He said you just fouled that guy. Which he did. It wasn't called because the game was already over.

It was unacceptable. Yes Underwood is surely frustrated from losing so many close games, but even in that game how many times did we kill a run with a terrible turnover or foul.

This team should have 4 or 5 losses of they just didn't kill themselves. It's got to be very frustrating for the staff.

Yeah it was a bonehead play but I thought Underwood let a little desperation show with that reaction. I suppose 0-8 with at least half of those losses coming in the final seconds would do that to just about anyone. :noidea:

It's about guys making the same mistakes over and over again.

Credit for the W goes to me. After watching all year I changed our momentum by not watching. Thank you. No, thank...thank you, that's enough applause now, let's put the focus back on the team:D

Since I didn't see it, the Alstork silliness had to be at least legit enough, otherwise BU would not have reacted like he did.

With .01 left on the clock and 90 ft from the basket, no one can load up and throw a 90 footer before the horn sounds. The only hope is to run into someone and flop and pray for a bailout call. High BB IQ players and teams don't give the opposition that chance because they get as far away as possible. Getting anywhere near anybody presents a risk that you can't take. A 5th yr player just has to be smarter than that.

Great win...against the Loosiers also...any win against the hated Bobby Knight former regime is warranted with a healthy toast....

As far as BU and the final play, it was well deserved to yell at a bonehead act by MA and I fully understand the frustration that BU has been going through as the leader of the Illini....it must be so difficult to teach, teach and teach some more then see the silly plays we have made to lose games that should have been won.....

I stated a long time ago that I saw Trent Frazier as being the leader of this team before the season ended.... Oct 2, 2017, 07:56 PM

I think trent is gonna be a major player this...

I think trent is gonna be a major player this year and surprise a lot of people...slasher with great body control

He has surpassed all my hopes and expectations and I fully expect TF to be on the all frosh first team when the season ends....His driving thru the lane for layups are exciting and with him and TJL playing together last night should be a standard for how the lineup should be for the rest of the season...

Way to go ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to BU and Illini Nation. This was a feather in BU's cap not just because of the B1G W but because he's accomplishing success with the slurry pit Groce created. BU (and his coaching staff) is doing a great job of making "chicken salad" which is the sign of a good coach. Last night's game was a perfect example of this. BU got a W in spite of the fact that he has a collection of individuals that don't have the skills to succeed in the B1G nor know how.

I can’t criticize it when I had almost the identical reaction in front of my TV.

I'd love to see the final clip of Underwood yelling. Considering I've seen underwood chew into many players this season, I'd like to see what all the hoopla is about for this play by Alstork.

It's in the gif thread. Alstork does run up to the Indiana player after the intentional miss, but I don't think Alstork actually touched him. Dumb to run up, but I didn't see a foul.

I'll take the win! Always nice to beat the Loosiers . Happy for Coach Underwood on his 1st BT win . May he have many more come his way

We were up 8 with 1:20 left. I was excited we were going to win. My wife says, "We could find a way to lose still." Thank goodness Indiana gifted us that one at the charity stripe. Underwood has to coach this team to do everything. I am glad he yelled at Alstork, because he should not have left the free throw line after the intentional miss. It was a terribly dumb move by a 5th year senior. Thankful for the win. Hope we can get some more.

I don't think whether he actually fouled him or not was the issue. The fact that he ran up for absolutely no reason (habit most likely) is why Underwood was upset. With .1 seconds left, it doesn't matter. But what if there was .6 seconds left?

Not a lot to take away from this win. Big men continue to abuse us and only Indiana's terrible free throw shooting bailed us out. I'll take the win and continue to see progress. I am looking forward to the day when they take down a B1G team without any question. Let that be Rutgers!

Why? Any Illini fan of a young and struggling team that has lost some heartbreakers and finally beats its biggest rival and can't be excited is no Illini fan in my book.

Right? We are all very aware of where this teams stands right now. Who knows how many more wins we'll get this year? Let's enjoy the ones that we do get, especially against the goddamn Hoosiers.

BU clearly was screaming miss it right before he took it

I shouldn't have quoted "clever" as I had no issues with that decision to miss it. It's just that if you're forcing them to side-arm heave a shot with .000001% chance of going in, cool. Don't you dare sprint into that player's cylinder, trip him, and force the ref to make a bang-bang call. Odds of that being a call were obscenely higher than the odds of the player making the shot.

BU did exactly what I would want him to in that situation. I was just pointing out the fact it wasn't mark's quick thinking to miss that shot.

Teaching moments need to happen at the right time for them to actually take effect. I think this was a good example of that. If MA is ever in that situation again, this instance will be at the front of his mind.

Gotcha, agree completely. Honestly, if my boss gives me direct and blunt feedback I don't often like it (in the moment especially and in publicly even worse), but it is an investment in me. It makes me better. It's tough love that we all need, just that it must be tough when you're receiving it in front of teammates and TVs... Gotta have thick skin on that stage!
