Illinois 73, Indiana 71 POSTGAME

Tonight I think you can throw Tejon in there. Actually I like seeing him & Trent in the game at the same time.

Those two are the only guys we have who can destabilize a defense with the dribble drive. Together they seem to stress the defense's ability to focus, cuz now you have two guys who can breakdown the D - two potential leaks to try and plug at any given moment. This seems to make things easier for their Illini teammates, too. That backcourt seems to provide our maximum disruption level, offensively.

Jesus. Did Alstork almost foul him on the full court chuck with .01 left?

He did, but he didn't. With .1 on the clock, the guy rebounded in the air and the is no way possible that he could land on his feet and heave a shot. The clock ran out.

the sideline reporter is taller than leron, can we sign him up to play center?

I believe that he has used all of is eligibility to play college basketball.

However, I can't remember where he might have played? ;)

Mark Alstork can sit the freaking bench the rest of the year. For a 5th year player, he makes the dumbest decisions. Commits stupid fouls. Complains constantly. Couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if he was standing in the middle of it. Gets to shoot 2 free throws to put the final nail in the coffin. Bricks the first one. Misses the second on purpose, and almost fouls Morgan with 0.1 on the freaking clock. Give his minutes to Damonte and Smith. At least they will learn. Alstork thinks this is the Horizon League and can just do whatever the hell he wants and dominate the game. I'm not going to miss him AT ALL. And neither should you.

I understand your optimism but Alstork plays lock down defense for the most part. Smith and Williams rode the bench in the second half because they weren't getting it done on defense. We have plenty guys that can score. Sure, it's good to look ahead to the future but if we can win we need to win. I don't care who plays. They'll learn whether they ride the bench for being a defensive liability or if they play because someone else isn't living up to offensive expectations. I prefer the former, if we're talking about the future of Illini basketball.

I get what you're saying. Sort of.
You might be 100% right. But on the other hand, so what if we win 1 game. At this point, its about the long term. Alstork isn't there for the long term. So I'm not sure that I agree. I'm now invested in 2018-19, sadly

But putting them on the bench because they repeatedly make the same mistakes is about the long term. BU has been playing them despite their freshman mistakes all year. I think he's had enough. Sending a message can be just as good, if not better, than letting them play through mistakes.

They tried as hard as they could. But I guess eventually you run out of ways to give a game away. No matter how hard you try.
Haha so true. If we could ever figure out how to close out games we actually might be decent. Hopefully it's a function of freshmen and lack of confidence. That will at least be something that should resolve itself as they get more mature and battle tested.

He's not going to bench Alstork. How is that going to look to other transfers? Plus possibly our best defender.

I see your point. I don't pretend to have enough insight to know which way is the best way to deliver a message to this team. Glad we have BU. Think he will get it done

The things that happen to us are so mathematically unlikely. Just from a probability standpoint alone, it's insane. Up 6, throw an errant pass then foul to give them an and-1?

A parallel universe must exist in which we are 19-3, both Mark Smith and Mark Alstork are providing competent offense, and Coach Underwood has a promising side hustle as a porn actor.
I want to trade lives with my alter-ego in that parallel universe.

Shon Morris Northwestern. Very good player!

Best line of the night by Morris

When the Illini and IU had gone over 7 minutes without a FG.

I can’t believe Alstork ruined the fun of our first win :(

We wouldn't have won without his defense! He made a risky play at the end that luckily didn't get called. That's it. We won in large part because he can contest shots without fouling (compared to anyone else on the team).

It wasn't "luckily uncalled". The game was over as soon as the ball was touched. However, he had no business challenging the rebound at all.
