Illinois 76, Michigan 53 Postgame

How many people have run and played a game recently on this board? I'm sure it's a wide variance of age and shape. I still play consistently. After a year off because of the "pandemic" I started playing again. Absolutely exhausting. Watching these guards go flying in for a layup, ending up on their back, and then getting up quickly and running back to guard is amazing to me. I'd be gassed after doing that once or twice.
Same. I'm working back into game shape but waiting for the vaccine, with the expectation that I'll be completely gassed when I start playing again. The 30- minutes of anaerobic work like they do on the court would liquify my 46 year old lungs right now.

It's also called being in your low 20's

Unfettered joy is such fun to watch. For the Christians out there, I believe it's how we will feel in heaven for all eternity. This is why I enjoy sports. It reminds me of that.

Oh, and I like this a lot:

Pick a verb to describe what the Illini did to the Wolverines: Obliterate, decimate, annihilate, eradicate, liquidate, exterminate . . . any of those would do.

“They played with great activity from the jump of the ball,” Michigan captain Isaiah Livers said. “They hit us first, we weren't prepared. Mistakes built on, we tried to fix them the second half, hit some big shots, but they had the momentum. Felt like there were on a run the whole game. We've got to counter. We didn't do a great job of countering off their adjustments.”

Writing for CBSSports.com, Kyle Boone summed up the value of this blowout for the Illini.

Illinois has now won 10 of its last 11 games and heaved itself into title contention after a bumpy couple of weeks in December and January. To demolish a Michigan team the way it did without Dosunmu, considering the way this Michigan team has played, should force you to recalibrate expectations. There are only a handful of true, viable teams capable of winning the tournament. The Illini showed with a statement they are undoubtedly among them.

If we go on a run, this team will be remembered as the Ayo/Kofi team. But my prediction is in 20 years people will look back and say “AND they had Curbelo coming off the bench?!?”

Once he develops some confidence in his 3 point shot no one will be able to stop him. Kid is going to be a star.

But what also makes them such a powerful team is Trent (4 years of experience - knows how to be The Guy) to pick up for Ayo and Giorgi (3 years experience and full time starter in the past) to fill for Kofi when fouls put him out and Williams to do whatever is needed even when removed from the starting lineup. All three have accepted their evolving roles and embraced them.

Those eight mins of ESPN highlights this morning went well with my coffee and a sunny view out my office window, in more ways than one.

I-L-L baby. I-L-L.

(And get well soon Pruman. Sorry to hear of your pain. Have been there and it's awful. Your posts always make me smile. Take care, brother.)

We can lose and be a #1. After tonight there isn't another team outside of Gonzaga, Michigan and Baylor that has a case. Our Q1 wins, SOS, NET ranking says so
Probably, but if Illinois were to lose to OSU, and then OSU win the B1G tournament, they might be able to sneak in. The obvious answer is for Illinois to keep winning. :)

Bilas has now been on call for some of our best all time Top 10 matchups/smackdowns
Yes, and he didn't even have us as "one of the teams that could win it all" at the beginning of the year, which I thought was curious at the time

The BigTen office needs to get a clue and announce that there will be a Co-Chamionship if the Team with the most wins doesn't have the best winning percentage.

Which pretty much explains why Trent seemingly never drove the ball to the rim....and all of a sudden...without Ayo....he did it in the last two games more than his combined efforts all season. This has been a huge and noticeable difference....and very successful and productive. Huge props to Trent Frazier for leading this team to a new level of play. n
I think another factor is Curbello has shown how successful you can be driving as a smaller/thinner guard. Might have given Trent a little more confidence. Combine that with the fact that you HAVE to guard Trent on the perimeter and he should be able to do this at will going forward.

I agree. The definition alone on our guys is insane. When you add in the fact that they can run the whole game with minimal rest, it really blows the mind in the best possible way. They rarely look truly gassed.
Especially Frazier since he plays so hard on d and without Ayo has had to be our primary PG.

Goodness, somehow Iowa just passed us back up in KenPom without actually having played between the time we just won and now. So... how does that work? I generally really like KenPom, but this is just mind boggling
I just looked and the positions have been reversed, Illinois #5 and Iowa #6.
Even though they still show the same efficiency.
Can't explain that either, but it feels closer to reality now. (Still think we should have separation)
