Illinois 77, Ohio State 74 Postgame

Looks like we are playing Nebraska tomorrow. At the half Tominaga is 70% from the field, 67% from three.

Feel like the Illini needed a tough win like that. It wasn't pretty but they managed to claw one out and you're going to need to do that if you want to make a run in the tournament.

Dain was great though may be hard to play him against teams that can put 5 shooters out like Nebraska can. Though if he plays like this I like the idea of playing him with Coleman and Ty and just bullying teams on the offensive glass.

Domask had about as bad of a game as you can have. Imagine he will bounce back fine though he missed Dain a couple times when he had a lane on the pnr.

Ty is incredible defensively. Legitimately has the ability to guard 1-5 well. Would honestly like to even see him more aggressive offensively.

I've been a big Harmon fan but it's like the mon-stars stole his ability to play basketball right now. Really need him to figure it out quickly. Also, you can't play him and Goode at the same time right now.

I’f that situation happens next week, or any time moving forward, for the love of everything please foul. Please, please, please.
Really just need to be smart about it but as soon as Thornton dribbled past the 3 pt line it's a good time to foul.

Let them bring the ball up and waste some time foul them early when they pass the 3pt line or drive. Fouling too early doesn't do you a ton of good but the play OSU ran created a perfect situation to foul where they would have gotten the ball back with like 2 seconds max.

I just looked at the game stats. Not much complaining about the refs after this one.
Except that held ball call was a 3-5 point swing and was an AWFUL call. The baseline official with better angle had a foul, and the official looking through two other players and in front of the OSU bench overrules.

That was just terrible and at a big point in the game. That was an old Tom Rucker call, where the official nowhere near the play tries to big time it. Rucker spent years making calls like that, and it always infuriated me.

Glad I stayed away from the Game Thread on that one 😮‍💨

Was proud of the fight we showed down the stretch but some players seemed…off. Hopefully Domask forgets about this game entirely.

Huge minutes from Dain though and Coleman totally redeemed himself 😉

Also. Free throws 😣

By all metrics, Ohio State has been a top 15 team since they fired their coach, going on a month now. Had won 6 of 7 including against Purdue. Round of 32/S16 type of game. Absolutely huge to find a way to win when we didn’t have our fastball.

The good, I don’t think we’ve played that well the last 3 games and have managed to go 2-1 with a road and neutral win and the only loss against a one seed who had to go nuclear from 3 and get a couple of lucky bounces.

The bad, I think Coleman’s leg injury from early this year has flared up again, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence we’ve lost our fastball when he’s slowed down. Hope he can heal up by next week.

I’m convinced Ty has basketball magnets inside his hands…
Maybe that’s why shooting isn’t his forte. 🤷🏻‍♂️
It is incredible to see a guy, who I'm assuming was an excellent basketball player his entire life, shoot a free-throw and you wonder if he is going to fall on his face before the ball leaves his hands.

Believe it or not, this game may be a huge springboard for rest of the shortened season.

Rest is pertinent during the grind of the Big Ten season; Illinois has played real well when rested.

To me, for the Big Ten tournament, it's the team who played already that has an advantage, especially when the competition is very similar: OSU played yesterday, got their feet wet while nervous, playing-not-to-lose Illinois struggled. And yet, Illinois advanced.

They got the ugly, nervous, struggling game out of their system. Stop #30 on Nebraska and get the ball inside on this weak Nebraska defense and Big Ten Championship game, here comes the Illini.

Sooooo, after losing my brother on February 4th, I lost my 67 yo brother-in-law, my sister’s husband, to pancreatic cancer this afternoon. Even though he was a staunch UW and Packer fan, he appreciated my family’s fanaticism to Illinois. At times tonight, with my heart already hurting, I thought I might be next. Thank you, Coleman, Dain, Ty, and Terrence, for pulling this one out. I’m toasting with vodka to Russell and my Illini tonight… 🧡 💙

I said to my husband that Coleman was limping…

I think he needs get back in that dunker's spot, slashing to the basket role that Ty has been doing the past couple of games. He doesn't seem to be a player that is comfortable on the perimeter. I said during his hot streak that he reminds of a poor man's Bruce Brown. Brown is a not a good shooter and not exceptional at creating his own shot but he is exceptional at getting into the lane and cutting to the basket and scoring. Brad needs to utilize him more in that area again.
