Illinois 77, Tennessee-Martin 74 POSTGAME

We’re 2-0 like we wanted to be. I’m sure there will be some lessons learned from this game and I think it’s good for these young guys to experience the college grind by playing two games in 48 hours.

I do think this is the sort of game we would have lost last year.

It definitely had a Winthrop feel to it.

They are not comfortable with their passing yet. You can see them pause and hold the ball to long and then they are not decisive with their pass. Once they get in a rhythm and the passes come quicker and crisper, this offense is going to be awesome. We've only seen glimpses.

Agree with all of this. Assuming BU can get them there

I feel like all the "teachable moments" under Grove came in loses. I'll take the win and things to work on.

I was going to say, sometimes these games are good for young teams. Sometimes they are better than blow outs early in the season. It’s even better when you don’t play well and win rather than lose obviously. Having a lot more to teach and still win is a good thing. I’ll take this one tonight happily.

One concern I see from this game and EIU game is that the opponents learn to beat down our defense easily at the end of game. Set a pick then we switch. Then throw the ball into the paint then it's a layup. Our lack in frontcourt depth makes this worse.

Other coaches will see our hole and tell their players to make those easy plays. If we keep playing this one-dimensional basketball we will get out-coached.

The offense is good and I think we will improve when shots start to fall and players are more familiar with the system. But we need to have more than one strategies on defense.

Finke: I thought we played scared (down the stretch)

Underwood: Tale of 2 halves for us. Really pleased at half. We were active & flying around. Took them out of some sets. Established Leron early. Got the ball to Mark Smith.

Underwood: I was concerned coming in. We have a lot of freshmen that gotta understand how to prepare for a game. Missed some assignments. Got to grow from that.

Underwood: Tonight we got exploited. And to their credit, they kept fighting and they made shots.

Underwood: We hadn't spent a ton of time against a zone. I've never had problems against any pressure. Our passiveness bothered me late. Something we've got to grow from.

Underwood: Ball has to be ours late. If we've got to go to the parking lot to learn how to fight, we have to get those rebounds.

Underwood: Can live with aggressive turnovers. But it was a bit of a mental thing. We'll clean that up.

Underwood: Need to get the ball to Leron & Finke more. If I have a problem with Michael, I need him to shoot the ball more.

Underwood: I don't worry too much about shooting. I thought all the shots were pretty good shots. Mark Alstork is a really good shooter. Just didn't go in tonight.

Underwood on Jordan: He's been incredible. I've got to find a way to get him more minutes.

Underwood: Take pride in making our players better. Change is good for some people.. Change has been good for AJ.

Bad
Holy cow we can’t make rhythm threes
Getting beat on a straight line all the way to the rim
No backside help or rotations when we get beat
Pick and roll defense on the back end

Good
Win
Leron and Mark
Our hedging on ball screens is fantastic
Ball movement and attempts at the right ball movement

A lot more of the bad repeated tonight. Yuck.

Why is Kipper in the doghouse? Only played 12 minutes. We're going to need him because Finke and Black looked gassed at the end of both halves. They already have a size and speed disadvantage, being tired on top of that isn't going to bode well in the B1G.

Also, I'm officially worried about the outside shooting. That's now 5 games, if you count the scrimmages, where our outside shot has been poor.

We don't have even one good and consistent shooter. No one is anywhere close in terms of shooting to JCL, Hill, or Nunn. Alstork has many scoring weapons but he's not consistent.

Patience, my friend. This was game two. BU has mentioned multiple times that he does not have all plays/strategies installed. Additionally, look up what BU did with his D last year after losing a few games. In this case, I’m not worried about the coaching acumen of this staff.

Also, why didn't Trent Frazier see more time in the second half? I thought he closed the first half very well.

Frazier had a few turnovers in the first half and got beat multiple times defensively. In the 2nd half, Smith and Damonte both saw some time at PG. They provide extra toughness, length, and rebounding that Frazier can't.

Aaron Jordan is 4/8 from 3 through two games. Additionally, JCL was not a consistent shooter. He regressed from his freshman year to the point where he was shooting under 33% from inside the arc and under 37% overall. Those are bad numbers. Again, patience, my friend.

I dont know what game everyone else is watching but there are a ton of times when Smith is "WIDE OPEN" and Alstork and TJL wont pass him the ball..that sorta mentality will and did come back to haunt this team..... not room for small punitive things like that the TO TJL has Smith was wide open on the left wing.......just me observation

It's pretty obvious that you are extremely biased toward Mark Smith. You could say the same thing about almost every other player. Black, Finke, Smith, Alstork, Tejon. Pick any player and there would be many times where they were open and didn't get the ball.

Re: rebounds.

"We've got to go out into the parking lot and figure out how to fight!" :D

JCL was one of the best 3 pt shooters we've ever had. His ball handling and Groce's offense hindered his production.

I heart this quote from BU.

I agree, but rebounding and loose balls weren't a problem earlier in the game. Finke and Black were gassed.

Yes, he was a good 3 point shooter even though he regressed his second season which left him with a career 3 point percentage nearly identical to Luther Head. Again, the quote I was responding to referred to “consistent shooters” as in not isolated to the 3 point arc. Good shooters don’t shoot 32% from 2 nor do they shoot 36% from the field overall. This is all a moot point because we’re arguing over someone not on the team.

BU answered that in the press conference. Said he didn't put enough effort into his preparation for the game. He's trying to change the culture. Got to hold people accountable which is fantastic.

Unfortunately, Kipper was not on his game tonight to give them a break and if Ebo or Vesel would have been inserted for any length of time, we probably lose this game, thus a weakness that may not be corrected this year.
