If teams want to Zone us then we will just roll w/ Harmon, Domask, Coleman, Goode, TJ. But not many teams actually run zone or work on it in practice. As for the press(which again not many teams do or do well) then there are various ways to break it and I think we will ultimately be alright with TJ, Domask, Ty, Harmon and Coleman
We put on a zone-breaking clinic last year against 'Cuse. I am not worried about someone throwing zone at us.

And if teams try to get pesky with quick small guards the Illini can counter with Sencire and DGL.

Those two did some PnR together on Sunday and it was fine.

I'm sure it was. If Rodgers can outmuscle a PG then getting them to switch to Dain will obviously work too, and Rodgers is quick for centers to stop. The only thing that is limiting is Rodgers not taking the perimeter shot off the screen if they leave him...but hopefully he will be comfortable doing that. I just like the idea of isolating Ty on these smaller guards and then there is less reason to clog up the area with Dain. Its really more a strategy probably for when Dain is out I guess, because then you can spread shooters around the floor for Rodgers to find if/when they double him.

Think we have too many ball handlers to worry about the PG position. It will be handled by committee on the court. i.e. Domask, Shannon, Hawk, and etc, etc.
We have plenty of guys that can handle the ball, but we don't have THE guy when we need someone to bring the ball up under pressure. Domask does well enough and you trust him to not lose the ball, but it looked like the offense went stagnant.

I was definitely half-watching and playing games with my family, so maybe I'm wrong about Domask.

Yeah - we're the only big ten team he hasn't beaten - which is hilarious given how much he ragged on Illinois and its fans. He's had to eat his words in a way that rarely comes around in sports - it's glorious

Seeing a lot of people comment on the amount of layups we gave up. I think you all are missing two important pieces.

1) That’s how basketball is played now. The reality is it’s much better to give up layups than open 3’s. (Kofi is playing overseas and wasn’t a top 10 draft pick for a reason.) And we did a REALLY good job running Kansas off the three point line. The commentary that they are a bad three point shooting team is ridiculous. We locked them down from three. What we saw was good defense, not a poor shooting opponent.

2) We don’t give up that many layups against anyone not named Kansas. They might be the only team we see this year outside of the tourney with comparable length and athleticism. Re-watch the Ottowa game. Every layup they took got swatted into to bleachers. Our length is going to bail us out of a lot of those situations this year.
It's better to give up long 2's and midrange shots than open 3's, but certainly not layups.

Well , it's 2 days after the fact of us beating the # 1 ranked team in the AP pre season poll and some here are making the game out as we lost or we have a multitude of weakness' that will prevent us from winning another game this season.........I am exaggerating that premise , but good Ancient , sounds like some peeps will never be satisfied with our results on the court......

I even read one post that brought up the home court advantage and that we really lost the game.........at least that's how I read it..........

We are a very athletic and loaded team .....I'm sure our victory made a lot of coaches in the CBB world sit up and take notice of us.......if they didn't then that's their fault , not our's............Remember everyone , that was OUR second game with an influx of new players that have bought into the everyday guys point of view and made it clear to me that the win meant more than individual stats .....totally different than some of the players we had last year that are NOT on this years team.....

Trying to quantify the good and bad traits of this team is like the old " finding a needle in a haystack " scenario.........

We are good......We could be VERY VERY good..............that's why you practice and then play the games........Some of the posters here might want to temper their criticisms for now.........It would behoove everyone to wait for more game results before opening the floodgates on all the things wrong with this years team............JMHO , but I think some posts here have been foolish and juvenile , especially after our win against THE # 1 RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY......How about enjoying the victory and holding off on all the armchair observations until you have more proof of our liabilities and then submit them here.....

I , for one , am still smiling from ear to ear over our victory and will continue to smile till the day arrives for me to be crying about our difficulties.................

JMHO.........................................

“I'm sure our victory made a lot of coaches in the CBB world sit up and take notice of us.”

And potential recruits😉

IMO, Kansas didn't look like a #1 ranked team and it wasn't because of our less than stellar play at times. If that was their best, I'm thinking they fall in the rankings pretty quickly.

Not disagreeing, but I also don't think any coach out there expects their team to play their best game and hit on all cylinders the first game of the season, let alone an exhibition.

I really like Domask. He can do everything. He may not be a star but he will be SOLID which is what we need.

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts previewing the college basketball season. Something I don't get as it relates to "exhibitions games don't matter".

Everyone is thrashing Louisville and St. Johns for losing to teams they shouldn't have, rightfully so.

That being the case, why can't Illinois beating Kansas in a clearly highly competitive game at least boost the stock of the Illini?

Side note: I have not heard 1 national broadcast talk about this game. Nor the TN/Mich St game. What gives?

Really seems like he is the leader we’ve been missing. Doesn’t seem like he is worrying about the stats and is making unselfish passes. Quincy also a weapon as a three level scorer and just solid. Great role players for TJ and Hawk.

Saw that Kansas shot 13-23 (57%) from three point range in their opening game of the season. Just noting given that we held them to 3-12 out there. I think this team we have is going to be strong defensively. I think the thought on running teams off the 3-point line is that we are long and have shot blockers/contesters and can somewhat thwart the side effect effect of guarding the 3-point line so fervently, which is that teams will find more shots closer to the bucket.

I understand what you are saying, but that can also be said for the coach from JMU. Izzo and MSU got outplayed and coached.
