Illinois 82, Valparaiso 57 POSTGAME

Just hope for ISU and Illini for game 3 and you will have your crowd whether it is at Redbird Arena or State Farm Center. Hopefully Redbird Arena since I live down the street:thumb:

Would be at Redbird since ISU is the 1 seed.

Spring break begins on Saturday. Why wasn't Orange Crush behind the benches?
If we play the Redbirds it will be at their place.

Two observations:

1. I must finally admit it. After 4 months of touting TJL for playing time over Tate, I have to acknowledge that TJL is not an A+ ballhandler. I've known it all year but I've been afraid to admit it. For a 4-star PG, his handles are perhaps a 7 out of 10.

2. 4,700 people at SFC. Are you kidding me? What has our University become? 45,000 students on campus + season ticket holders + others in the surrounding area. Really??? 4700!?!?!? Is it spring break in C-U?

Are you surprised at 4,700 people? This is a game that means less than an exhibition game at the beginning of the season. It's a home game vs Valpo where absolutely nothing is on the line. No SOS, no RPI, no BPI, no building our tournament resume, no preconference basketball excitement......These are feel good games with zero pressure to wind the season down. If we play ISU....There might be a jolt of electricity in that game. If we go to NYC, it will probably get more intense. However, I can't blame anybody for not wanting to head out in the snow/cold for a glorified exhibition game.

For the first time all year, I noticed an aggressive "team" attitude toward defensive rebounding. All year long, it seemed like it was a crapshoot whether we would control a defensive rebound--at ANY TIME during the game. The Illini controlling the d-boards was very relaxing to me.
Did anyone else notice that? Was that Walker's influence?

Hill, after the game in the interview, was actually laughing for a change. Coach Walker - the same. He himself is naturally that a way it seems

Yep. Not only surprised, I'm totally shocked at the attendance. I probably would have guessed 12,000 to 13,500.

* I never missed a football or basketball game in 4-1/2 years of school. (Well maybe just 1 because of an exam).
* Our fraternity block couldn't get any closer than (the old) section B behind the basket.
* I recall when a local Champaign singer/song writer wrote an original song about our participation in the NIT......"All The Way to NYC".

I guess I'm just too absorbed in my alma mater's sports teams. Old School I guess.

ESPN Coverage

Man, am I PO'd. I've been looking forward to watching this game when I got home after teaching. Had the DVR set to record the game, only to get home and find they switched the game to ESPN because of Syracuse. What the H? Who cares about Syracuse. Now I've missed what appears to have been one of the best games of the season. Does anyone know if it is replayed anywhere I looked on my DirecTV guide and can't find it.

Thanks to the late switch, my DVR attempt failed again. Glad they went out and played hard. Basketball is still fun when it's played well. Even if there is nothing on the line.

You can watch it on ESPN3 online or the ESPN app if you have a smart TV or roku, firestick, etc.

Not sure when you went to school, but I'm assuming during slightly different(happier)times, same as myself. I was lucky enough to be there at the end of the Kruger/beginning of the Self era. The atmosphere on campus over the team...Over the program was unreal.

Now.....It's a downer. They had to do an all out marketing effort to sell out Senior night vs MSU! My gosh.....Those tickets didn't last 30 minutes if we're going to reminisce.

Five years of tournament free basketball, losing to Rutgers and getting spanked by Michigan......then Valpo at home in the cold and snow. That attendance number doesn't shock me.

It's the NIT. We just fired the coach. Did you really expect people to turn out to watch a beatdown of a short-handed Valpo in the 1st round of the NIT?

That was a pretty depleted Valpo team. If anything, they might be mor deflated by how their season ended than the Illini were. Not surprised by the result.

Malcolm Hill has a real good chance to pass Dee for third on the all-time scoring list. Think he needs 12 or 13.

Good to see big Mike Thorne have a nice game.

Glad it sounded good on TV. It was pretty quiet in person. Almost ALL of "C" was empty, and not many Krushers.

Obviously they didn't sell students the tickets behind the bench like they have been all year. I know there were students there. Don't try to make it seem like I don't know what is going on. Of course it's the NIT and I know we fired the coach. Really appreciate the heads up. Wow!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at point one I thought to myself, man, the 15 students in the Valpo band are louder than our entire home crowd.

Walker was very good in the post game presser. A refreshing new perspective.

Glad to see them more invested, at least no embarrassing loss in the first round. I wonder how far we can get...
