Illinois 82, Washington U 75 POSTGAME (Exhibition)

I didn't see the game, but I agree lets not read too much into the first exhibition game. The 2005 team beat a pretty bad team by 7-8 points their first game. Sergio McClain (not Coach McClain) got on their asses as a former player.

End of the first half and start of the second were good. Otherwise we looked pretty disorganized. That will improve once we start putting lineups together. Certainly no need to freak out here, but you'd hope for improvement on Friday.

Don't you kind of look at exhibition games kind of like NFL preseason games? I know they play a lot of people in the NFL games that won't be on the team when the season starts, but the lineup combos and things in these games are kind of the same thing. Coaches are experimenting and trying different things.
With all that said, I haven't seen the game, I'll record it tomorrow and watch, but as long as everyone came out healthy, that's my biggest concern. These games are like the Super Bowl for teams like Wash U.

Sounds like the game was not as close as the final score indicates, another moral victory, shaking the rust off, they played smarter we played harder, the refs nearly cost us the game, they were stealing the signs, they have a mascot we don't. I know I left out many more, just warming up the excuses, just in case I need them.

I fell asleep during the game. Glad to see them get the win.

It's early in the season. I was pleased to see Maverick Morgan's stats. Seems like he's continuing right where he left off last season.

Best stat of the game: TA with zero turnovers in 23 minutes. Glad to see him back. His experience is a huge asset for us.

He looked like he hadn't missed any time at all. Some steals and deflections. Made a three on a fast break.

Illinois was +25 with Abrams on the court. Only one better was Finke at +28.

Yea he looked good, albeit against a much smaller opposition. Really active on offense, hit a couple 15 footers, good around the basket. Wouldn't be surprised if he's our starting center to start the year.

Looked to be hanging on the rim and maybe some unnecessary theatrics afterwards.

Very unlike him; I'm sure we'll not see that much.

The ref should have swallowed his whistle on that one. Maybe the tv will prove me wrong tomorrow but I'm pretty sure a defender was walking under him and that's why he didn't let go of the rim sooner.

As soon as he did it, I knew he would have it called. He dunked with both hands on right side grabbing the rim and then releases his right hand and grabs the other side of the rim and hung on. Don't remember any defender underneath him.

A few questions:

Was WashU working off some rust, or have they played a game already?

Was WashU experimenting with line up combos, or did they use their normal rotation?

Isn't WashU a D3 program?

This was Wash U's first game. Yes, D3. They return most players from last year (including 4 of 5 starters). Very experienced team (and it showed). Number 10 in green was in the zone, almost all his jump shots were nothing but net. Very impressed with him. That was a good early test for our guys. Lots of things to learn from.

It's in the GIF's thread.... easy to see...

I noticed a Finke slam where he hung on a long time also... and no whistle...

Deon Thomas provided great commentary on the radio. Much more informative than Jerry Hester. Thomas used to coach, and brings a coach's perspective to the broadcast.

It is embarrassing that we lost the rebounding battle with a D3 program. I don't care who was on the court, we should be winning rebound margin and points in the paint against any D2/D3 program. Those come down to size, strength, desire and fundamentals.

This can't be right.

Not necessarily. They can get more rebounds if we just take a lot more shots and miss a lot more. Odds are they are gonna come down with a few more. Unless we get an insane amount of offensive rebounds. And I believe we still got our share of those.
