Illinois 85, Maryland 80 Postgame

Benetti is so good across all sports. Truly a special talent. As a Sox fan, I am going to really miss his call of the game.

Jason loves to broadcast baseball but he is better at calling roundball. He stays focused on the game action and does not wander into obscurities and side/inside jokes that lose much of the baseball audience.

He's going to be at the very top of a network sports perch before its over.

Not sure I agree with your anaysis of his baseball call. You have to wander off a bit in a baseball broadcast. A baseball call, in itself, is very boring and dry. The best in the business wander in and out of the game itself for entertainment value. I might be in the minority on this take, but Benetti is top notch calling baseball.

The best baseball announcer ever - Vin Scully - made a Hall of Fame career of wandering into obscurities and inside information.

This is one of my favorites -

Let me be more precise about my comment about Jason. The obscurities I mean are more inside jokes with Steve Stone-kind-of-thing where they seem to be talking more to each other than the audience. A bit of that is OK... but they had a frequency of doing that a bit much at times.

I did love Jason's banter with Bill Walton, though. That is electric.

I do think Brad finally found something with the starters but with Harmon in for Quincy- it’s our best lineup right now- Harmon gives us another ball handler and can guard the quicker guards and make free throws and QG has really been struggling. It puts Ty at the 4 where he can be effective- it’s our best defensive lineup by far and they can all make free throws

This is the lineup that will close out games for us in March
I like Quincy a lot more when he's slashing to the basket instead of just standing in the corner. Would like to see him cutting more and attacking the boards on offense.

I just read this/other comments on the Terps blogs. I guess a whole bunch of ppl are bent out of shape out over what they think is disrespect to their coach “Lefty” (equivalent of our Lou) by IL players during their pregame tribute. If it is true, it’s a really bad look and goes beyond playful trolling. Anyone know the facts?

Edit: at least one Maryland fan has some self awareness..

what are they saying the players did? Genuinely curious on this. Mockery or similar would be deplorable, but it should be considered that these are high level athletes who have a pre-game routine. If they chose to continue to be "in the zone" in their headphones or whatever mentally and physically prepping for a game that might not be the best presentation but I don't think it necessarily is a matter of disrespect.

Ghost snuck one in, I was asking this of LadyLoyalty

So the Maryland fans are taking after their head coach. Checks out. Honestly, I've never really thought too highly of Maryland over the years. Lots of "little brother" vibes coming from the shadow of Duke and UNC in the ACC.

Honestly, could not care less what Terps fans are complaining about. All they do is complain. They’re the worst fans in the conference. In the ACC, they were always second fiddle (only because that’s the saying, in actuality they were about 7th pre-expansion). In the B1G, they’re largely an after thought. They’re perpetually bitter because of it.

I just don’t understand how a team of Young, Reese, DHS & Donta Scott aren’t winning games in this league 🤷‍♂️
Some nights only two of them end up scoring 90% of the team's points. DHS is a frosh and the game is starting to slow down for him. He'll likely be a beast soon enough. And they're 1-6 in single-possession games this season. They're on the cusp of being 9-6 or 10-5 but just can't get there. Against MSU at home Young squandered three possessions in the final 90 seconds, any one of which would have won the game for them. Their defense keeps them in these games.

Their fans are baying for Willard's blood already. Their petulance and sense of entitlement is pathological. I love it.
Willard's head scratching clock management in the final minute made this one much less agonizing than it could have been. You have to foul there. It probably adds two possessions to a two-possession game. He didn't give them a chance. I told my wife as soon as they let Marcus dribble up the court, Willard just blew it. We had to make a few clutch FTs, but not nearly as many as we should have.

Goode is definitely struggling. Now, Ty didn't have his best game even though he was plus 20 on the +/- chart, but to say he is regressing is just plain wrong. He has been fabulous the last several games and the stats are clear on that.
Sorry I made that statement. I didn’t know you were a basketball and analytics savant.

To me it looks like he’s regressed defensively. He also has 18 pts, 9 reb, 5 TOs in our last 3 games.
