Illini2010-11

Sugar Grove
I know we talk about how good Fletch is all the time, but these last 4 games have really shown how valuable he is. We have an entirely different gear than other teams in the second half. Makes a massive difference.
I could not agree with this statement more. The team is so well conditioned, and the fast pace that Illinois likes playing, that wears on the opposition over the course of the game. Adding Dainja to the already solid weapons list, the Illini are going to be very hard to prepare for. I truly believe that Illinois can beat almost anybody they play, even if to this point, the Illini have yet to have a true marquis victory. It is such a welcome relief to have the team that presents nightmare matchups for the opponent, as opposed to being on the other end of the stick.

So thrilled for so many of our players:
1. Domask with the 10th triple double in NCAA tourney history and first since Ja Morant. Offense was not there but he was a willing passer, made the effort on the glass, and then got a few buckets to seal the deal. Even when his offense isn't there, he's doing the extra things to help the team win
2. Dainja with an offensive explosion in the 2nd half. We exploited their big men. So happy for Dain and hopefully the end to this season will keep him in Orange and Blue next season
3. DGL's contributions in the 1st half should not go unnoticed. Played lock down defense and made two key 3 pointers. He was a ball of energy and I'm happy he was able to make a big impact in the 1st half
4. Goode had 3 impactful 3 pointers which was much needed for his confidence
5. Last but not least, Terrence Shannon Jr doing Terrence Shannon Jr things. He put the team on his back in the 1st half and if it wasn't for him, we might be looking at a different outcome.

Let's get past Duquesne and get that Sweet 16 appearance that we have been thirsty for the last 19 yrs
Great synopsis. Just need Harmon to get untracked.

I saw in the postgame Reddit thread that Spradlin is rumored for the SIU job. Yes please make that happen!

For sure. DGL took his mins there in the first half so for me, it doesn't matter who helped. Bottom line is one of the two played a major part in keeping us in the game

Yes, the Jordan Bulls and the Shannon/Domask Illini do have this similarity. The thing about the Bulls though is that the NBA regular season is long and drags out for the players who get bored over the course of so many games. The Bulls would get bored with the less-significant games and the drag of the season and would coast along a bit... and then get serious and let the other team know who the best really were.

The college season is not nearly as long so I think the tendency the Illini have to not show up for some periods of the game has another cause. Something else is causing the lack of focus and energy which has happened a few times. Wandering attention? Youth? If Coach Underwood had the reason for thist it would his life – and ours in Illini Nation – a whole lot easier and less stressful.

That’s one thing about tournament ball. There should never, ever be a lack of focus and drive. This time of year is what all the work and practices and profuse sweating and swearing and stern looks and outstretched arms and shaking heads and joyous smiles and brotherly hugging is all about.

Difference this year seems to be difference in 2nd half. Starting to feel confident if ahead or close at the half. Appears to be a combination of coaching adjustments and greater defensive intensity. Have always credited coaches when team runs away in 2nd half. Don’t remember that from past seasons.

Gotta give a little love to Fletch for that too. We don’t run out of gas.
