Did I hear one of the announcer guys say when Texas had a ten point lead, Brad told the team we have them right where we want them?
How about one of the announcers saying right before a commercial break, seconds after Texas hit a big shot and their guys were celebrating, "These guys knew how this game would end," when there were THREE AND A HALF MINUTES LEFT! I about blew a gasket when I heard them say that.

No, sir, clearly those guys did NOT know how the game would end, otherwise they'd all have been crying in their Gatorade.

I disagree. While that stat looked bad initially if you think about it as a lower ranked team winning 15-20% of your games against someone ranked top two in the country? That's a pretty good stat. Some of those games you might be #5 and some of those games you might be #40. 9-42 is it now? Looks good to me.
Another way to look at it is this: No. 2 ranked teams are 42-9 against us, which is the same as 14-3. A nice record, but not the kind of record that typically gets you a no. 2 ranking.

Agreed. I think the Illini play a bit frenetically also that at times can or seemingly can border on out of control. They push it on both ends. I thought that was the case with the early offensive fouls. Those are bang-bang plays and if the ref is seeing a somewhat seemingly out of control player, they’re more likely to call the foul on them.

The other factor is perception. Ninety-five percent of the time a fan thinks his team is being jobbed by refs. There are always bad and borderline calls. Officiating is never going to be perfect. Fans always notice/remember those that go against their team, but far less notice the ones that go against the other team — or consider those calls “correct.”

As to perception, in the Maryland game I saw several posters point to the fact that Maryland took more foul shots (10 more I think) as “proof” officiating was one sided. But Illini fouled 3-point shooter twice, accounting for 6 of those extra shots. Against Texas, tons of posts about how bad refs were and that they were killing the Illini and how Texas was committing fouls but weren’t getting called for them. This despite the fact Texas was whistled for 4 more fouls and Illini took 12 more foul shots.

Was the officiating great? No, it never is. We’re there some bad or missed calls? Yes, there always are. was the officiating as bad as all the complaining on here would indicate? No, and it rarely is. I’ve come to learn that there are four things that are inevitable: death, taxes, and griping on here that 1) refs are jobbing the Illini and 2) that the announcers are terrible cuz they don’t talk about or say enough good things about the Illini.

All that aside, great win by the Illini and fun game to watch.
I was frankly surprised we didn't get called for more fouls underneath. We did a phenomenal job of staying straight up, and, to the refs credit, they let us do it.

For the first time I saw the Matt Mayer that I saw at Baylor. For 2nd time I saw this team dead in the water get up off the floor and show just how good they can be not against a cupcake but against a top ranked team on a neutral floor. I saw one of our great freshman [Epps] come in off the bench and guide this team, then make the biggest 3 pointer of his young career. I saw our leading scorer shutdown for most of the game take charge in OT and carry us to victory. I saw what seemed to be a porous defense throughout the game come alive in the last 5 minutes and make stop after stop. I love the intensity that Harris brings to the defense. I love what Danija brings off the bench, he is tough but smooth around the rim. I saw the FIGHT emphasized in the "FIGHTING ILLINI". This team is multi-talented and anyone of them can score at anytime from anywhere on the floor. They are maturing game after game and credit goes to Coach for scheduling these tough games to see what they can do under fire. They have responded well so far. Now go out and beat these next 2 and pound the hell out of Misery! Oh, it appeared the asst. coaches had to tackle coach Underwood on the goaltending call. That was horrible! Onward we go!

Dee and Deron in the Big Ten tournament?
INDIANAPOLIS -- Dee Brown believes he and Illinois' two other freshman starters are only learning how to play.

If Thursday night's game was any indication, they might be the best pupils in the NCAA tournament.

Brown, Deron Williams and James Augustine combined for 37 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists in their first tournament game, and Brown hit two free throws with 22.8 seconds left to help the fourth-seeded Illini seal a 65-60 victory over Western Kentucky in the West Regional.

"We're starting to learn our roles," Brown said after finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

That's a scary thought for opponents.

The freshmen even overshadowed Big Ten player of the year Brian Cook, who had his typical game with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

You need glasses because he slapped the ball into the backboard,he blocked the shot. Both announcers showed you the play multiple times from different angles, that clearly showed the block. You must have a standard definition tv.
I didn't see any evidence that Coleman hit the ball before it hit the backboard. I thought it was clear that he didn't touch it after it came off the backboard. It wasn't clear to me if he didn't hit it at all, or hit it sometime between the frames rights before and right after the ball hit the backboard.

I’ve watched alot of Texas this season and they have been amazing. Legit. Beard is a good coach. He’s got a team like ours only that it’s in year two. Tons of personalities and transfers - blending talent. They have looked lights out. This is a big deal, a big win.
If Texas would have won they would have had a legit argument to be number 1 with a considerably better resume than Houston.

I hate Texas. I hate their fans. I hate their culture. I hate their arrogance and entitlement.

So if I have a positive thing to say about Texas, it probably has some merit to it.

On a side note I can not wait until Texas takes multiple @$$ whoopings in SEC football. I think aTm is a weird place, but it will be even more awesome when one of those whoopings comes from them.

Of our 4 freshmen, Epps and Harris have adjusted faster to big time college basketball than Clark has, and Rodgers is still lost. Over time, all of them will be solid players for the Illini, and this will be remembered as one of our best classes.
I really feal like Clark will be just fine, he took the point of a team that will win a national title this year, and is trying to structurally change the foundation of his game in the process to fulfill that duty. I don't think our coaches could recruit any better. These men put it all on the line for team first.

Illini in OC

In. The. Alley.
I am VERY glad Mr. Underwood (the guy who knows his players best and makes the decisions) thinks the opposite. The exact opposite. Polar opposite. Night/day opposite.

With his skillset, talent, heart, and BB IQ, I’ll gladly ride the CoHawk train all the way!

Imagine being an Iowa fan last night and listening to Dooki V. I wrote earlier that I am glad we didn’t play Dook and have announce the game. I turn the sound off and listen to the Fastner call in show.

He hit it as close to contemporaneous to it hitting the backboard as it gets. If the officials hadn't initially called it a goal tend, it would've never been overturn. Just a bad initial instinct by the ref but understandable in real time I guess.
The problem with the whole call was Higgins (the lead - under the basket made the call). That should never happen. The trail or C official makes a goal tending call. The lead is in a terrible position to see goal tending.

I made a call like that in one of my first HS games and the team that I made the call on lost in OT. The chew chief official ripped me a new one in the locker room after the game. I personally know John Higgins, and that was a terrible call from a “mechanics” of being a referee.

Awesome game. The better colored orange prevailed.

Funny stat. Harris went 1 for 4 from the line and his season free throw percentage actually improved 🤪. I think he's one of those guys, however, that will work at it and show massive improvement.

NEW YORK — Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 12 of his 16 points in overtime, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining, and No. 17 Illinois rallied to hand second-ranked Texas its first loss of the season, 85-78 on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic.
Jayden Epps added 11 points, including the final five points of regulation — a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left and two tying free throws with 8 seconds remaining. Epps then blocked Marcus Carr's jumper in the lane just before the buzzer to force overtime in an entertaining showdown at Madison Square Garden.

I wish you guys could see what I see. If you watched practice you’d think every kid would want to transfer. No one is safe from Brads rage. But they know he loves them just as much as he gets in them, and that’s evident from the post game celebrations. Fun fact, Ayo was the most MFed player of the BU era
So what you're saying is.. this teams loyalty is actually Stockholm syndrome

You would think ESPN might have the 2 stooges calling the game mention this fact ..... instead of continually b*@wing Duke, Iowa, Texas, anyone not called Illinois
Another funny and annoying thing: They spent so much time talking about alllllllll of the Duke fans who WOULD be there for the next game and not one word about all the (way more) Illini fans who were ALREADY there. 😂

I definitely agree about Virginia. We'll see about UCLA.

But yeah, Texas had no business being #2. Still, that's a good and talented team.

We just played harder than them. We were so, so bad for the majority of that game but we just kept smashing against the wall and it came down just in time.

We have a bunch of good players. If this ever turns into a basketball team, look out.
Exactly, defense will keep us in every game. When we learn to play offense as a team we will be as good as anyone.

I didn’t see a block either. Using the camera view from behind the backboard , the ball didn’t move after Hawkins’ hand passed.
