Smith and Carter both got tick in '05, although Carter's was mostly in blowouts with spot duty here and there otherwise. Smith though was fully a used player. We'll have to see on Rodgers the rest of the way, he has 0 points against the four good opponents Illinois has played thus far and his unwillingness to shoot makes Illinois a lot easier of a team to defend. He reminds me a lot of Freshman year Da'Monte Williams, who of course played all season because the team was a lot worse back then. I think he will blossom into a very good player, but he may need some time to work on his offensive game and could get relegated to a Warren Carter in '05 type spot/mopup duty role in Big Ten play (especially with Goode slated to return in a month).

Harris is playing too well to leave off the floor right now. That's twice now he's been a huge spark for comebacks against really good opponents. He's making it impossible to leave on the bench, which is exactly what you want. Just get that man a free throw coach.
I said this earlier but was met with comments about his playing time is 19 minutes a game. Yeah but also played 5 cupcakes to help mpg and 4 good teams. Yes good defense (fouls too much) and rebounder but has to be a threat to score.

Cringe when I see a lineup of Harris, Rodgers and Dain plus any 2 others - where are the points going to come from?

Nobody really plays 10. Shannon and Hawkins aren't going to be leaving the court much in big games (like yesterday). We'll figure out our 7 or 8 by season end.
Before the season I would have agreed with you full heartedly.

But I think we are a very rare team in that we actually can go 9 deep. And not only do we not lose anything by doing so but everyone has the ability to add something unique to the lineup.

Dain: post presence
Epps: microwave
Harris: our best on-ball defender
Goode: knock down three point shooter
Rodgers: Solid glue guy. Probably toughest path to consistent playing time.

Not sure why we would want to drop 2 or 3 of those guys out of the rotation.

What happened to Brad on the bench during the goaltending call..... did he just slip?
I think he just flipped because it was a bad call, then the assistant coaches grabbed him to calm him down. Surprised he didn't flip when they didn't change the call. What's the point of instant replay if you don't change an obvious mistake? Probably already been discussed, but didn't read the first 20 pages.

And the one people were taunting as a starter. Think the emergence of Harris has cost him minutes. Never saw him as a four when we have much bigger men ahead of him that can shoot. Really thought he was TJ’s backup but Epps and Harris have seemed to cover that. Still expect heavy contribution but maybe not this year.
I am far from qualified to make any categorical statement on Ty Rodgers, but from what I have seen, it is his effort and hoops IQ that made him a offensive threat in HS. He is pretty good within 8 ft. of the basket, can rebound, has great handles, outstanding vision, and a willing and proud passer of the ball. However, none of those are elite enough at the B1G level to make him an big contributor on this team, and his FT shooting is a huge negative. His IQ and dependability make him valuable in crunch time, but his FT shooting negates that contribution. Both his court and FT shooting can be elevated to acceptable with hard work....and I expect he is willing to do the work. Great kid who I admire without any personal knowledge. Being humble by being willing to do the little and unseen things well is admirable and desired by coaches, but at the level of this program, he needs to be a dependable scorer. I think he will be at some point.

Ty has to hit the gym and shoot a bunch of jumpers until he can make a consistent one simple as that. I watched all the games in the FIBA Americas Tournament. He played well and was a Starter amongst a group of impressively rated American prospects, but all his points were pretty much right at the rim and often uncontested (the games were so lopsided that there was plenty of love to be spread throughout the roster). If he is a bigger Da'Monte (who had to develop his jumper) that's not the worst thing in the world, although he can certainly be more especially as he already has a really nice passing touch that Da'Monte didn't at least until his Super Senior season.

I think Rodgers is probably a four-year college player, so if we can keep him that entire time I think he is really going to become a force eventually once he gets his shot figured out.

Not saying he is going to become as good as him, but Draymond Green was 2-17 as a Freshman and Sophomore for MSU, by his senior year he was shooting 38.8 % from three as a go-to guy, leading team scorer. He can't shoot threes consistently in the NBA but for college he was a good enough shooter by the end to be really dangerous.

Agreed it will probably tighten up come B10 season but the 7/8/9 guy will change nightly based on match up or if someone gets hot.

Don’t think anyone expects him to be a “big contributor” but he needs to be a threat to score within 10 feet of basket.

For example both Hawkins and Rodgers both both had open 8 footers in the middle of the Syracuse zone. Hawkins took some shots and Rodgers seemed (or did) to want to kick the ball back out.

His offense will come. He will Get his playing time and continue to develop. many on here were expecting immediate contributor. I tempered my expectations

My observation of the freshmen:

Epps: elite scoring guard
Harris: elite defender
Skyy: elite point guard
Ty: flavor of elite-ness tbd

Ty may not be elite at any one particular skill but he is adequate at most. When one of our elite guys is unavailable, Ty can cover for about any of them.

I wish you guys could see what I see. If you watched practice you’d think every kid would want to transfer. No one is safe from Brads rage. But they know he loves them just as much as he gets in them, and that’s evident from the post game celebrations. Fun fact, Ayo was the most MFed player of the BU era
I wont believe it until i see it so let me know when I might be able to join you.. I am free all of next week. Thanks in a

Held their big dogs to a combined 7-25 performance, 2-11 3pt, 19total points, and probably 7 cramps.
Impressive

Ervin Small and PJ Bowman both got 10 minutes a game for the 89 team.
Nick Smith played in 38 games and averaged 11 minutes a game for the 2005 team. Warren Carter got 8 minutes a game.
When it counted Weber only played Ingram

I like the fact we go 9 deep (soon to be 10 with Luke) so we can go 100%.
Clark, Melendez, Mayer, Hawkins, Shannon
-----
Epps, Harris, Dainja, Rogers

The 89 Flying Illini brought 2 players off the bench
Gill, Bardo, Anderson, Battle, Hamilton
------
Smith , Liberty

The 2005 team
Brown, WIlliams, Head, Augustine, Powell
------
Ingram, McBride
How can you forget “never nervous Ervin Small”. We don’t win the Louisville game in 1989 without him. :)

Something to look forward to this season is the continued "gelling" of our players on O and D. A perfect preview of things to come was the missed connection between CHawk and Sky early in the game that later turned into a beautiful assist and layup by that same duo in the 2nd half. I get excited when I think about how these guys will continue to learn each other's tendencies in the half court offense, especially with the way our bigs can handle the ball. I'm sure that the mistakes on switches will be fewer as the season goes along. The point is, we have not reached our peak by any means and we are still competitive with the top teams. This team has ELITE 8 potential and I would be surprised by anything worse than that. (Threw that last sentence in there for the elite reference ;)

If one takes the time and effort to look at the season stats, Rodgers is 4th on the team in assists...just one behind Epps (all ahead of him played significantly more minutes)....and 7th in rebounds. Both are admirable numbers. Also, he is fourth on the team in turnovers per minute played....only hundredths behind Mayer and Harris with Epps by far the best in that stat. Ty has skills, but putting the ball in the net is not currently a strength.

I think the Big Ten Tournament Semis and Finals give a better feel for our "true rotation" in 05. The Arizona and UNC games were more so "balls to the wall, go 100%, win or die trying, play everyone till they drop" in a similar situation, we'll see who our five are. The BTT Semis and Finals were still big games, and they never got out of hand.

and here was a competitive OOC road game @ Arkansas at the same portion of the season as the game against Texas
